It's dull and boring and slightly cheesy.

i like it.. as mentioned by someone else, it has this kind of Irish drinking song vibe to it. and the content of the song is very much in that vein.. it's kind of overblown and trite. i think it's Frank sort of singing in a style.. i don't think the lyrics are meant to be completely straightforward and heartfelt.
this would be a good song to sing with your drunken Irish friends (hopefully you've got some), arms around each other, swinging beer mugs inison. either that of your Pirate friends, if you have any.. |

When will happiness... pretty and warm melody, lovely song. I really really like it, but maybe being betweeen Massif and Lorraine just makes it seem not as good as it really is. Big fishes outshining the small one. Not eating it, but almost.
Too slow, maybe... but still a lovely song. |

yah it kinda reminds me of dirty old town, which is cool cuase i enjoy that song.
and yes barto it is cheesy but i cant get enough of it. i mean "the pigeons around us were cooing" could be the cheesiest line ever, and the way its sung matches that, but something about it is so great. i love the way dave singings with him on cooing as corny as it is.

I love it too. It sounds like a Pogues song, and they're anything but cheesy.

The only thing i'm crazy about in this song is the pigeons line..reminds me of the Beck song 'Girl of my Dreams':
I first met you down on Lovers Lane.. The birds were insane.. Flapping all around..
hahah..
I'm not crazy about Irish tunes (sorry!) so that's my feeling on it. |

i think old heartache is the weakest, it starts off good, but it kinda loses steam in some way i cant put my finger on when he sings it real low.

That song (When Will Happiness Find Me Again) is one of my favorites of the whole album too. I like "Massif Centrale" but I think "When Will Happiness Find Me Again" is a stronger song than "Goodbye Lorraine." I love the line about "...and the pigeons above us were cooing..." It wouldn't work for all musicians, but it works perfectly for Frank Black.
I personally feel least when I hear "New House of the Pope." But it's still an okay song.

No justification other than my subjective opinion, but it's definitely my least favourite on SMYT. A little too straightforward, I suppose, if you want something qualitative, but it's still FB which means that it's a good track. Just the least among kings.

I like this song..... not too sure what the worst on the album is...... hmmm, Coastline or Jaina Blues, but worst is a harsh word as I like them as well.

well "least favorite" implies that its still a favorite, just not "the" favorite. its a little more tactful than "worst" if you truely do like all the songs.

all the songs on this new disc could be accused of a certain cheesyness -but it's a 'good cheese' somewhere else on this forum it was noted how all the songs seem to be of the homage variety, like how 'the snake' is like Roxy Music -'everything is new' is somewhat like a T. Petty song (but much better) etc. through the first few listens all i got out of it was how it is a seemingly wholly derivitave project but on the other hand the type of sound that is favored by the band these days lends itself to sounding like something that has gone before. so waddya gonna do? -for such a lame song it's sure getting back-up from the yea-sayers...at first i thought it was a little tacky: '...the bombs were deployed...' but actually it is a well done tune and i find it more listenable than something like 'Massif Centrale' which to me sounds like frank re-hashing himself. all in all it's a great album.

I think for me the best song is a toss up between Manitoba (which I really didn't think much of for about a week), Everything is New and The Snake.

beck's best songs are inspired by heartbreak. 'asshole', 'nobody's fault but my own' and then the entire 'sea change' ps
ps. show me your tears hasn't sunk in yet. the jury is still out for me |

wwhfma is pretty tops. I heard Manitoba several times live, solo & w/Catholics before the album came out and always thought it was just okay, not an overacheiving melody or lyric by any means, but for me, the album version was an absolute revelation. it stopped me dead in my tracks, and a tear came to my eye. It wasn't just the Van Dyke Parks intro, or the accordian, or the trumpet solo, or the scintillating guitar arpeggio (rather than just non-articulated strum-a-long heard in all previous versions), but certainly all the special touches in this arrangement conspired to make something far greater than the sum of it's parts. I don't know if I've ever heard such a major transformation from live -> studio in a Catholics song. You hear it a little on the DITS tracks vs. their early incarnations but it's not nearly as striking. Anyhow it was this tranformation that confirmed for me the absolute rightness of Frank's current artistic path. I feel as good about this song and this album as I've ever felt about anything he's done, and it's honestly been a few years since I felt I could say that. Sorry if this is off-topic but there is no official Manitoba appreciation thread.
