A review by Andrew Mueller, no rating or date - I don't think this one has been posted yet:
Amazon.co.uk Review It has taken him far too long, but Show Me Your Tears is the first album Frank Black has put his name to that evokes something other than a wistful longing for his old band, the Pixies. Most of Black's previous solo works have been little more than diminishing returns on Pixies' signature elemental ferocity; Show Me Your Tears is not wholly free of this flaw ("Massif Centrale" in particular sounds like it might have been a Pixies B-side), but in the main it's a vibrant, poised and surprisingly warm and funny record. Show Me Your Tears is underpinned by a wry country leaning that informs Black's music and lyrics--it can be imagined that Black picked up a few tips in this area from former Wall of Voodoo frontman Stan Ridgway, who produced half the tracks. "Horrible Day" is a fine, swinging honky-tonk lament, reminiscent of Cracker at their best; "Goodbye Lorraine" is a gentle trundle that profits from the contrast between Black's great growl of a voice and the melancholy wail of a lap steel. This is Black's best solo record by some distance, and almost--almost--enough to inspire the hope that there's nothing in the rumours of a Pixies reunion. --Andrew Mueller
