A rather bad review of SMYT by a french webzine. The guy doesn't like country, and rather strangely finds that the album has no coherence. Pretty weird given that everyone else thinks the exact contrary. Anyway, here it is for those interested:
Deux morceaux surprennent : "This Old Heartache" et "Manitoba", à l’introduction easy-listening. "Show Me Your Tears" est donc un album beaucoup moins cohérent que ses prédécesseurs : Frank Black s’écarte quelque peu de la country présente sur les derniers albums pour s’intéresser à de nouvelles pistes musicales. Serait-ce un album de transition ? A Frank Black de nous le dire…>>
Now in English with Babel Fish: <<One apprehends always a little the arrival of a new album of Frank Black: perhaps is this fear to have still business with a néo-country-pop-core disc -... Pas so simple to slice with this one... The album opens with two titles - "Nadine" and "Everything is new" - pointing out the beginning of career of Frank Black, period "Teenager of the Year", and are thus very enticing. Ballades more inspired definitely by the country follow, with the interesting structures but with quite indigestible arrangements ("My favorite Kiss ", "Horrible Day", which could have been entitled quite simply "Horrible" and "Goodbye Lorraine") On" New House of the Pope ", our ex-imp lends itself to the play of the crooner and draws some rather well. A piece recalls that Frank Black was also the leader of a fantastic group: "Massive Power station" could be a forgotten title of "Bossa Nova". Two pieces surprise: "This Old Heartache" and "Manitoba", with the introduction easy-listening. "Show Me Your Tears" is thus an album much less coherent than its predecessors: Frank Black deviates somewhat from the country present on the last albums to be interested in new musical tracks. Would this be an album of transition? In Frank Black of us statement... >>

Ah, cool. I was wondering if Rock & Folk had already reviewed the album.

Is it worth buying the mag? How long is the article? I swore I would never buy Rock & Folk after I read the worst article ever, 5 or 6 years ago, about the Pixies. They described Joey as 'an anonymous eurasian' and said Kim looked like a truckdriver.

It's in the "Tête d'affiche" part of the magazine. Not too long but quiet consistant. they talks a lot about a Pixies reunion. Frank said that if he had been less autoritary(?) (autoritaire), the pixies could have continue. He said also that the band reunion was also motivated by MONEY. |

I agree Rock and Folk is not my dream Rock Mag, but what other choice have we?Les Inrocks (Not far from the Talibans)? Rock Sound (Not onterrested in Linkin Park and Sum 41)?
