By combining both the dramatically dark and festively upbeat moods, respectively, of 2002's thematically dichotomous albums Black Letter Days and Devil's Workshop, Frank Black may have finally succeeded - for the first time since listeners split over his underappreciated 1996 major label swan song The Cult of Ray - in making the record that will appeal to both camps of fickle Frank fans: those still primarily enamored by his first two solo releases and the staunch Ray cultists. Be that as it may, Mr. Black still probably doesn't care what you think, and the fact that he's still brashly making the music he wants to make (as always, recorded live to tape) is only further underscored by the fact that he's on an artist-interest record label. But talk about artistry - in addition to appearances by old pals Joey Santiago and Eric Drew Feldman, Francis is also joined by both Van Dyke Parks and Stan Ridgway (who also produced a handful of the tunes). Ostensibly a bunch of sad songs (yet somehow not so much a downer as Days), Show Me Your Tears ranges from the bluesy kick-start “Nadine” to the cranky epic “Massif Centrale,” with lots of rocking and reeling (not to mention the token country and Spanish flavor) in between. In the end, it's Frank Black's most balanced and best all-around effort in years. (spinART) www.spinartrecords.com
