I have been a Pixies fan for years, and have just recently gotten interested in Frank Black's solo career. I own "Teenager of the Year" and really love it. I'm curious what other great CDs he has made, and where to go next. Thanks.

If you love Teenager of the Year and Trompe Le Monde, you're pretty much guaranteed to love Frank Black , his orange solo debut album. After that, you might want to dip into his Catholics output. If you want straightforward-garage rock type stuff, go for the first two Catholics albums, his new stuff is more Stonesy and in general more complex, with lots of intruments on each track and whatnot. In general his 3 most popular solo albums seem to be Frank Black, Teenager of the Year, and Dog in the Sand. The new one, Show Me Your Tears, is pretty great as well. |

These lines have always confused me. I do not have any lyrics in front of me, but isn't it 'How may stars girl/ can you both count/ and then classify' (girl not girls)? If so, does that make sense to go from singular to plural? Also, it being a lullaby, wouldn't he be singing to just one individual? blah-blah, blah-blah-blah.

Sir Rockabye, I hope you find FB's solo stuff as good if not better than the Pixies..... All his albums are worth getting (I was always gonna say this being on a FB website).

I believe he's saying how many stars can you both count AND classify, like being able to perfom those two actions. |

Yup, looks like you were right. I must have typed girls while thinking "girl". Thanks for pointing out the error. Now I can post without looking like an idiot. (Or at least try)

"The Black Sessions: Live in Paris plus the Kitchen Tapes" is generally regarded as his weakest album, though some do not consider it an album. |

God FUCKING damnit, I've explained this before. Do you people bring this shit up just to piss me off, or just to sound obscure and cool by naming an album that you THINK is an album off the cuff that not a lot of people have heard of? The Black Sessions, while it is an ALBUM in the general sense, released by 4AD, is not part of FB's discography. It is classified as a compilation. Official live discs are classified as compilations and do not count towards the artists discography. So it is an official release, but is not an album in the "LP album" sense.

thanks el barto....i tried to tell 'em. the black sessions has songs from previous releases, only they're live versions of them as it is a live show that was recorded. that in no way makes an official "album" though it was a release that was very limited by a record company. most albums that count are studio recorded and have different songs than the releases before.

Well then... Is the John Peel Session CD an EP, or a "compilation"?

It's a compilation. An EP is a mini album, less than 30 (or 20 minutes?) and not a lot of songs.

Thanks for answering my question Jim, and for going postal at the same time. Why does it piss YOU off so much though?? If you want to be anally-retentive-correct, The Black Sessions Plus The Kitchen Tapes is not an "official live disc." See that "Plus the Kitchen Tapes"? Those weren't played in front of an audience. And the "hidden" track, a studio version of Calistan (if I remember correctly) obviously isn't live either. Maybe this pisses you off but that's your problem. So, I disagree and say that The Black Sessions Plus The Kitchen Tapes is indeed an album, and part of FB's discography (the discography should include all official releases shouldn't it, not just the studio albums?). |

i imagine a studio album is well on it's way as usual.... what are we gonna do if/when frank finally takes a break and doesn't put out a single album for a year? we're getting so pampered these last few years with release after release in short amounts of time...... |

dunno, was thinking about this a few days ago.... if Frank decided not to release an album for another two years then the Catholics should release a live album in between to keep the trend going.

I know that it's been explained before, but I did not intend to debate about it. I was trying to answer the question of Sir Rockabye. One day, I was looking through the archived posts of this forum, and I noticed some hread topic called "Ranking Frank's CDs" or something like that, and I couldn't help but notice that virtually everyone had the black sessions album at the bottom of their list. That's why I posted the reply, just to let Sir Rockabye know, in case he lost all his money except for $12, went to a record store, saw all the Frank albums, and wanted to make the best possible purchase. Why would I waste my time and post a question that has already been discussed numerous times? With all due respect, I think that we should be able to mention the album without turning it into some tired old debate. If not, I will delete all the replies. Seriously, I am very sorry. Please forgive me. I Don't Want to Hurt You (Every Single Time). |

Ahhh... ice cream. It tastes great and brings you serene comfort. (okay)
The Black Sessions mostly sucks because you can't hear the damn bass guitar on most songs (can be a fun thing if you're a bassist, however). The performances are pretty solid, and there are a few rare songs on there, so it's a worthy purchase for the FB-obsessed.
Good luck with your purchases, Sir Rockabye. |
