this may have been mentioned in the past here so i apologize if it has been discussed previously.....
anyways, last year or so i downloaded a bunch of the 'andy richter controls the universe' show and watched some. i finally watched all of them today and i was pleasantly surprised when, during an episode, on came 'i heard ramona sing'.
it was a good show too....i wish they didn't cancel it.

Yeah, I noticed it too. That show was so funny once they finally figured out what they were doing. I can't believe they canceled it for. . .what? The Pitts & Oliver Beene?!? WTF!!

Not to start an argument, but I thought that show was awful. It was a plagiaristic rehash of gimmicks that had already been used on a number of shows like "Herman's Head" and that Calista Flockheart show. Then they went out of their way to act like they were visionaries for coming up with the notion of having fantasy shit played out on screen.

Oh well, the real reason I DESPISED that show was because Fox cancelled one of the best shows I've EVER seen and replaced it with the Andy Richter vehicle.

That show was "Undeclared", the follow-up series from the guy who created "Freaks and Geeks". It was beyond intelligent, and one of the most shockingly real depictions of late teenage emotion ever put on broadcast TV.

Not only did they cancel it unceremoniously, they only gave the show a week's notice, and didn't even allow them to finish out the season to wrap up any storylines. They just sacked them, even though most major papers and magazines were falling all over themselves to say that it was one of the best shows on TV.

Come to think of it, now that I re-read this post, it does sound like I'm trying to start an argument...

Sorry.

I'm with you Peter on the Undeclared cancellation...what a fucking bunch of SHIT that was. I taped all of the season minus one episode and still watch it and still laugh. It was fantastic. FOX was once an excellent network, very hip and cutting edge when they first arrived on the scene. Now they're famous for ditching excellent shows prematurely (Undeclared, Andy Richter, Family Guy, Futurama...)

A couple things:

One, Andy Richter never claimed he was being innovative with Andy Richter Controls the Universe, I even read a review where he said it was a Herman's Head ripoff...but then he went on to say "we're basically all ripping of the Monkees anyway". So he had a sense of humor about it, I'll bet that's the type of show that could have gotten very good in time.

I liked Undeclared a lot too, oddly it came on for the first time during my freshman year of college and my roommate and I would watch, both of has having about as much social ability as the protoganist, so it was pretty funny. Joey Santiago did the music too.

Both good shows, too bad.

For the record, I saw 5 minutes of Oliver Beene and the Pitts, literally two of the worst shows I've ever seen in my entire life.

I completely agree about Richter being a humble and stand-up sort of guy. I didn't mean to imply that he has pontificating such crap, but that Fox was.

And Joey's music on Undeclared was pretty great in its understatedness...

i hated "Undeclared".. too close to home. well, i never actually watched it. but i didn't like the commercials. "The Pitts" was the worst show ever. Hard to believe it had Simpsons lineage. "Oliver Beane" has it's moments, but I'd rather watch Andy Richter.. which i didn't even know was cancelled until this thread. i thought it was going to be a summer replacement.. and as the summer went on i kept waiting for it to replace someone! never happened. dang.

I think you made a big mistake by not checking it out. It was probably WAY too close to home, which was part of its genius. Like I said before, I was amazed that so accurate (and humorous) a portrayal of freshman college life was ever aired on broadcast TV. It's even more amazing considering they could not show any nudity or use any foul language.

And to top things off, it was just plain fucking funny. It wasn't crude funny, it wasn't shock value funny, it was intelligent funny. The dialog was fucking great...the camera work...the characters. I can't remember which episode it was (I think it was the Adam Sandler episode), but there was a scene when they're all arguing with eachother in the bedroom, blaiming one thing or another on eachother...the first time I saw it, I just couldn't stop laughing. It was brilliant. Fucking tragedy that it's gone.

The episode where they both admit they wait till the other is asleep to masturbate was absolutely hilarious...but kind of awkward to watch with my roommate...err yeah.
