You're evil, the thing...this topic is truely evil. Why don't you ask which arm I'd rather chop off? This is a tough question, man. I guess I'd go with the Pixies not existing...with FB starting in 93 till present, I'd at least get to enjoy all the times I've seen him live.

I'd say FB just because there are twice as many albums, yet... Trompe le Monde cannot be topped.

That's beyond a toughie.......I gotta go with Frank though, for basically the same reason: he's still around now that I'm old enough to give a damn. Still though, I wonder how many people would really have paid any attention to Frank Black's solo stuff if it hadn't been for the Pixies. I'm not saying his songs aren't strong enough to stand on their own, but I wonder whether he would have become big enough that people all around the world would really pay attention.

i definately go with door number 1. the pixies are great but frank's got way more albums and variety. nothing beats TOTY in my opinion. his new stuff is fuckin awesome. SMYT kicks ass. plus when you see frank you get to see/hear him play pixies tunes! |

And, if it weren't for the Pixies, then I probably would never have found Frank Black. |

I like Frank Black's post Pixies stuff, but in my mind absolutely nothing can beat the Pixies. I'd still rather the Pixies if they had only realsed one album and Frank had released 20 non Pixies albums. |

I vote for death to The Thing for doing this to us. I would hang before answering that question.

Dave has a good point though...removing the Pixies from history would throw the entire history of rock and roll way off. We'd still be listening to Poison and White Snake, I think.

Not a chance. That thing was dead anyway, something would have jumped in. Maybe hip hop would have been mainstreamed a couple years earlier or something, and the Seattle thing was in motion too. Remember, Soundgarden was the first of those bands to get picked up by a major label, and I don't think they owed anything to the Pixies.

Ouch..that's very scary Jim.
Bands may not have 'owed' anything to the Pixies directly, but they had tremendous influence, and no doubt played a part affecting the other bands that influenced SG, or whoever.
On a personal note, i've had a few folks tell me my music sounds like so-and-so, and oddly, i haven't listened to them at all...but i HAVE listened to bands that were influenced by so-and-so...you know? |

Nah... the only bands that influenced Soundgarden were Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. :)
IMO, there were plenty of bands around concurrent w/ or before the Pixies that had (or would've, if the Pixies hadn't existed) as big a part in spearheading the '90s mainstream surgence of "alternative" music. I'm not saying that most of those bands were beacons of consistency or melodic ingenuity on the level of the Pixies, mind you, just that they were similarly innovative and, thus, influential. Anyway, Poison didn't stand a chance of holding down the fort for long, Pixies or no.

It's a well known fact that Elvis was heavily influenced by Come On Pilgrim...
But seriously, I read and article where Kurt Cobain said (about Smells Like Teen Spirit - I think) "S**t, I wrote a Pixies song..". You can't deny the influence of the Pixies on modern "alternative". Franks title of "Godfather of Grunge" is well earned.
I just wondered which people valued most - The "F" section of their record collection - or the "P" section, but yeah - nice to get people riled...

i thought neil young was the "Godfather of Grunge" and frank was "the King of Alternative". and i always was pissed off about the 'teen spirit being a pixies song' when i can't imagine frank singing about depression or whatever in that way. i mean, he's just not as whiny as kurt cobain was. |

The Thing: Kurt was refering to the music of the song, not the lyrics. |

You're one of the first people who I've heard cite "Trompe Le Monde" as one of their favorite Pixies albums...I've always heard that it was uninspired when compared to their old albums. Reviews I've read always touted it as being like, the band's least favorite of their albums. Maybe it is, but I always thought it rocked, and it was the first Pixies album I ever bought. My favorite songs from that album were "Alec Eiffel" and "Letters to Memphis."

I guess by a hair's width I'd have to say Frank Black over the Pixies -- but I feel dirty and blasphemous for saying that. I don't know, though, if I were listening to Bossanova right now instead of Show Me Your Tears, I might answer the other way.
