Frank Black and the Catholics
Show Me Your Tears

Former Pixies mainman is still good shocker

Looking at the roster of current Frank Black residence Cooking Vinyl (Echo and the Bunnymen, Violent Femmes et al) one is tempted to muse that the label is the indie elephants' graveyard. However, such grim surroundings seem to have provided Black with a vital shot in the arm. Far from retiring himself to the soil, he sounds like he's thriving.
Because there's a sheen of splendour within these 13 songs as good as anything he's done in the past ten years. Indeed, 'Manitoba' is ace, like world-weary Louis Armstrong if he'd been raised on US College rock, while 'Coastline' is the kind of twisted lullaby Black excels at. Cancel the Hearse! Someone call the Undertaker! Frank Black is rolling over for nobody.

7/10

James Jam

(incidentally they gave the new Bowie album 7/10 as well)

Whoa... Looks like they're ashamed to admit the album is that good.

So they LIKE it, and it signals his return from the dead, and them it gets an 'average' 7/10? Seems like the review should justify the score. Still, at least it's positive...

well, you dunno. i don't know NME, but a few magazines and websites have 5 as the average. i know 2/5 is Q's official AVERAGE (although you could say their written review of SMYT portrayed it as worse than average.)

I am sure that next time around they'll pick up their 30 pieces of silver and slag Frank off. Fuck them!

Any other good review then fairplay but NME can fuck right off.

Cunts indeed.

7/5 is a very generous rating for the NME to give an established artist like Frank. They generally only like bands that have released one album and come from New York. It is irritating the way that, even in a postive review they have to put a negative slant on it.

I've never read it, but it seems to fit based on how much you all hate it.

Doesn't Frank mention this reviewer Jim Jam in "Sir Rockabye"?
I would give a good review, too, if the subject had once written about me...
