Only newbies? Pffft, fine then.
Question: is everyone else's booklet crooked? I don't mind, I am just curious (especially noticible on the last page and the cover?). |

Let me rephrase, EVERYONE tell us what you think about the new album now that it is OFFICIALLY released.
And uh, yeah, dude, you might want to use a less offensive name. English or not, it's still not appro, ya know. |

I'm listening to Horrible Day at the moment. Heard it for the first time about a week ago and didn't think much of it, but I have to admit that I now think it is a great song. The new album, although Ive only heard it through one is fucking awesome. Everything is New is a cracker, Nadine is great...... It is strange to hear a FB album and like the songs immediately.
Great album, this has the potential of being the best Catholics album..... time will tell.

well i waited like a million months and i just finished my first listen. standouts are everything is new, when will happiness find me again, coastline (!!awesome!!), and manitoba. the new version of manitoba is so different than the live version in a good way. i love the way it starts. interesting how he apparently had his exwife sing on that song. sorta like "The End" by the beatles i guess, the last (and only i guess) song they did together. i cant tell for sure how i like it compared to other frank records yet, so time for listen #2.

I don't like it. I've already said as much in other posts but I'll repeat myself without shame. I prefer a purer brand of rock & roll, the kind we got with early FB&C's. I don't enjoy the heavy-handed country flavor of BLD, DW, and especially SMYT. God knows what the next one will sound like but I'm a little afraid. I'm glad you guys like it though.

Chris, I agree with you somewhat. There are a few over the top ones for me like Goodbye Lorraine and When Will Happiness Find Me Again which are too much and too direct and the antithesis of what I generally like about FB (however, he does do these songs quite well, and I wouldn't say I dislike them, but I don't LOVE them). But the rest of the album is still gold, from songs like Manitoba & the way-too-short Coastline back to Everything is New & Nadine. Then again, I didn't find BLD/DW to be too country for my tastes, so...
I dunno, it seems unfair to rule out a song because it uses an instrument like the pedal steel which has been made synonymous with country. End of Miles is a great example of a song that rocks with the pedal steel. Or Eric Potter's cover of So. Bay.
I'm not sure where I'm going, so I'm going to pull over and have a look around. |

My favorite song off the CD is Massif Central. I love the "baby honest" line so much, I know not why.
Tied for second are Coastline, The Snake, and Jaina's Blues. They are all great IMHO. |

It's great
I had some weird ''I'm gonna cry''-moment during coastline and manitoba. I didn't
my dad seems to like it to although he stil has to say it reminds him to much of (old) Rolling Stones and Neil Young

"This old Heartache" gives me chillbumps. "My Favorite kiss" has the most superb little guitar line strinking offfrom the end of the first chorus "Everything is New" is the most catchy song on the Albu, "Masif Centrale" is Frank Black very much so. (I think you know what i mean) "New House of the Pope" is a GREAT story song. "Jaina Blues" has awesome slide. "When will Happiness" is an Irish folk song sounding song. "The Snake" I can't remember. Yet. "Manitoba" is awesome. "Coastline" makes me warm and happy when I hear it. "Nadine" is a big set of brass balls. That's the way a real band starts an album. "Horrible Day" and "Goodbye Lorraine" are fine but haven't sunk their hooks into me yet.

i think what it is for me is that almost every song always seems to have pedal steel.....it would have been fun if he just did it a few times and made you appreciate it more rather than just having it become a set insturment on almost every song these days. i feel it's a bit overused is all.....can't say i don't like the songs. ryan |

I think the sound of it makes me warm and happy feeling. I don't know what it is. Just after the song is finished, when it hits those last notes, I am always smiling despite it's sort of sad subject matter. |

I am literally in the midst of my first listen and so far it hasn't grabbed me like most his other albums but it is still quite good. So far I think Goodbye Lorraine is pretty catchy... This Old Heartache just started.... |

ok......this albumn is not what i was expecting......In my opinion, it is much, much, much better than what i was expecting. i love the sound of the earlier catholic days(st,pistilero)....and to me, this albumn has much of the same feel as the first two catholic albumns. maybe i'm wrong, maybe i was hoping to hear that sound(because i like it so much), and therefore have found it in this albumn even though it may not really be there - but i don't think so. i think that sound is there and i think this is a very strong albumn, and i love it. i tip my hat to Frank and everyone who had a hand in making this albumn. |

Just finihed the whole thing... I like the version of Manitoba because when I heard him play it in 02 it was difference. Some definite Neil Young harmonica on Coast Line... nice mellow album.

What's the Inside of the CD like? Lyrics? Pictures? How many pages?
With my stupid subscription to Emusic, I have access to the latest tracks/albums from Frank Black. Of course, I'm lacking inserts from BLD, DW, and SMYTMF.

It's 10 pages, if you count both fronts and backs... |

Stupid me. I pre-ordered the album through Amazon. With any luck I'll have it by the end of the week and will post my review then. Until then I can give you my order of favorites of the 20 second sound clips off Tower Records and the few songs I've managed to stream from my (useless) free amazon stream with purchase. On a side note, it's amazing how terrible most of these clips are. Instead of capturing the melody of the song so you can get a feel for it, they throw you straight into a saxophone solo. What the fuck?
Here they are:
1. Coastline 2. My Favorite Kiss 3. Massif Centrale 4. Everything is New 5. Jaina Blues 6.
okay, that's enough. this is pathetic. I'll shut up now and live vicariously through the rest of you until I get mine. Stupid me. |

I wasn't sure at the first listen (but then, I was at work and having a frantic day). Then I put the CD in the Discman as I headed back home and it really started to dig its way in. Somehow I manage not to air-guitar like a loony during "Jaina Blues". The other people who were waiting for the bus with me would have wondered what was wrong with me. Anyway. The songs are slowly starting to sink in, so far I love "Everything is New" and "Nadine", "Manitoba", "Massif Central(e)" (I really agree with The Swimmer on that one)... "The Snake" and "Coastline" I still have to get more familiar with. "Jaina Blues" rocks.
But what a sad record. I'm wondering, if I get to meet The Man at his gig in Lille (oct. 17, got my ticket!), if I'll be able to refrain from walking up to him and say, "Hey Frank, are you okay?" :-)
I think Im going to eventually love that record to bits, but then I'm biased. It has to be Frank's most French-flavored record to date, at least in the lyrics.
Franck

i just cooked up some linguine with some homemade pasta sauce, including a little new house of the pope thrown in for good measure, and i'm about to sit down with a glass of nhotp and give it a proper listen - even though i've had it for months, i'm officially popping its cherry

i really like the new album
but...
i also really miss frank doing his own backing vocals. i know this subject has been breached before but...man, i wish he'd sung "horrible day" by himself. |

I'm a huge Frank fan and like pretty much all he's put out and have had this record for a while now and have been able to form a pretty solid opinion as a result. I find the reviews a little hyperbolic, to say the least, and this might go down as the singlemost over-rated FB release (Pistolero being the most under-rated, IMHO). I've been following since 1989 and have never grown tired of FB, but I must say I don't listen to this one that often, and my brother---himself a huge fan----feels the same way. Hey, it's only an opinion, and not tantamount to sacrilidge or anything. Why do I feel this way? I feel some of the songs are a little too "easy," twangy and countified for my liking, and some of it's poorly mixed (yes, I have a real copy). There are some fantastic tracks, yes, but I miss the rock and roll verve and would love to see FB mine a different vein in the future. How about a punk rock album, or a balls-to-the-wall cover album? After all, he considered both at one time or another in his career. Of course, maybe a little of this has to do with the fact that I'm going through a divorce and a lot of it hits close to home. Strangely, however, those songs I like the most---if only for the content. Kind of like misery loving company, I guess. In short, not his worst, but his best like a lot of people are saying? I don't think you'll be saying that after the "newness" wears off. |
