Anyone have any particular ritual that goes along with your first listen of a new FB record?

I like that lemur, I lick it. That's velvety!

I make sure I have some alone time so I can hear it beginning to end uninterrupted. I'll usually smoke a joint too.

Nothing is ever something.

Not really, though I think this is a great idea for a topic. I suppose I spend a lot of time looking at the lyrics, usually I just sit and read them, sometimes along with the song, though generally not since I'm almost always listening while driving.

I've been wanting to have a glass of dark red wine or maybe a snifter of port and listen to SMYT, come to think of it. Something strong, hard, and rough.

Nothing terribly unusual, but I do wait until I'm sure I won't be interrupted and I don't have a first listen in a car.

It depends on how I get the record, but I usually skip through the songs on the first listen (especially when I'm driving back from the store) Then, when I'm home, I'll try to give it a full listen and I read the liner notes.

...un-interrupted, reading lyrics at the same time, then another listen with lyrics fresh in my mind....thereafter, usually listen 3 times a day for the first week

Happy 500, Jop, and have a fun first listen. (Sounds like you've already got that covered.)

Me, I'm just gonna tear the shrink wrap off with my teeth and head out to the car.

I tend to open it and listen to it in the car. Tommorow, I'll probably do just that if I buy it before I go to work. I like to flip through the book, too.

The problem with listening to it in the car is the audio quality is so horrific (especially for a song like Manitoba), but who can wait until they get home? I listen to it on the way home, pop it out, and bring it in to listen to on my computer.

Wait, you mean Frank Black has a new album out tomorrow?!

I've alredy heard this one, but with Devil's Workshop, I came out of Best Buy, got in my car and popped it in. With the car I have now though, the sound sucks. That's why I am gonna get a job at Best Buy... big discount on car stereo stuff.

I love listening to music in my car, but I have to listen to music on a stereo because there is ALWAYS stuff in songs that I can't pick up in my car. "Oh, I didn't hear that note before!" or "I never noticed that subtle guitar in the background." Must upgrade my system!

I usually listen to it in the car unless the store is like 2 minutes away from my house which tomorrow it will be. I think tomorrow I might listen to it on headphones the first time which is something I've never done with any album.

God I can't believe it's tomorrow. I'm so excited!!

Everything's better with headphones. Even with shit music you can more clearly hear what they did to try to make it good. Or I guess it might just make the annoying parts more noticeable, but still, using headphones is peanut butter.

Nothing is ever something.

All CDs I get tend to get one direct CD listen before getting ripped and transferred to my iPod.

Headphones ARE the best! I used to listen to a new album while reading along with the lyrics, but I found that I didn't pay as much attention to the music that way. What hooks me the most on music is MUSICAL hooks, with instruments, rather than vocal hooks. So I find it best to sit down with my headphones on, and analyze all the different instruments in harmony!! Then later I'll go back and check on any lyrics i'm unsure of!

Got coffee, got donuts, got wasted..

Aaaaaaauuuuuuuugggggggghhhhhh!! The torture! I just bought SMYT and now I'm at work, and I want to wait before I'm home to listen to it. It's here on my desk, the kitty is staring at me and I'm trying to resist from opening the case...

I just called every store in the city of Jackson, MS, and the only place that's getting it in is Borders (that's a quick $18.99 plus tax)...but when I DO get SMYT, I'll get back to my ritual of driving aimlessly away from my house for the first half of the cd and turn around and come back for the rest. It's the only way I can get away!

Well, the day an FB release comes out, I'll go up to the shop and pick it up. Then, after driving not more than 100 ft. down the block, I'll run into the side of some lady's car after she decided to shoot thru a gap in stopped traffic right in front of me, giving me about .003 seconds to react. (Stella and I are fine, but the Toronado's going to need some plastic surgery) Then after a one hour wait for the Bronze to write it all up, I'll get home and crank that baby up!!

Yikes! Glad to hear that you and your little lady are ok.

I'm too hopped up on cold medicine to drive, but I'm going to undertake a chauffeured mission after dinner to find a legit copy. I want lyrics!

Eee, that sucks. On the bright (?) side, you're probably now in the proper mood to listen to SMYT.

Don't have set rituals other than playing it loud and not reading the lyrics on the first listen. You can't hear the music as good if you do that. Oh yeah, I also skip through the whole album, playing only the first 30 seconds or so of each track...just to get a feel for it. Then I usually skip around to the songs that interest me most. It's only much later that I listen to the album in sequence. Am definitely going to take Frank's advice and have a glass of something refreshing with this one. I can hardly wait.

I had finished a project in the early afternoon and decided that it was time to go get SMYT. It was a quick in and out of Streetside. While I was driving to the next job, I listened to part of it and finished the rest at the job site. I didn't really get a good listen the first time through. On my way home, I listened to it again and I'm liking it so far. The true test is with the headphones tonight.

I got it yesterday (the 8th) because the local independant record store always has the new stuff available the day before release...so if they like you you can go pick it up the morning before it comes out. woohoo.

I listened to it at work while I...well, worked. Thankfully, I can listen to music as much as I want on the job. It's quite nice. I fix computers and listen to music on a decent computer sound system. Everyone relies on me to bring in music everyday - they don't even try to put their own stuff in. I guess it's partly because of my fascist tendencies when it comes to listening to music, and partly because they actually like what I bring in. Today, it was Frank Black, the Long Winters, and Muddy Waters primarily.

I got the first good listen to the album last night when I smoked a couple hitters and drove through the country with the sound turned way up.

This isn't really a ritual, but I'm glad for it. I go to school in Harriman, TN, which is about thirty miles away from where I live. I go to class MWF at 9 a.m. I always look forward to the ride out there, because it is very scenic, and listening to music in the car for me is the best way. The car I drive doesn't have a bad system in it, especially to listen to something not too horribly bass-heavy, which Frank fits into. I couldn't bump P-Diddy in it or anything (not that I'd want to) with the pair of factory 6x9's and the front speakers, but it is fine for my purposes. All last semester, I listened alot to BLD and DW on the way out there, and now, happily, I have another album to listen to! Said in Crankyankers voice: "YAY! I CAN BRING TWO OF MY FRIENDS!!!"

...i'm not black like barry white no i am white like frank black is...
