The rarest thing in my FB collection is the Black Sessions.
I snatched the import form a Virgin megastore at Ģ19 (the most expensive CD I ever bought). Recorded in 1994, Paris its has 18 tracks and its an official release. What I can't figure out is why are there 3 other tracks (Modern Age, Abstract Plain acoustic and one other) on the internet and the whole thing called "The Black Sessions - Live in Paris and the Kitchen Tapes" which has exactly the same listing + the 3 tracks at the end. I downloaded the tracks on p2p and the quality of the recording is just shit (most likely they are bootlegs).
Now, i'm just dying to find out what the hell is it with these tracks and what are the "kitchen tapes". I remember reading on the sleeve of Death to the Pixies how one day, before Pixies were signed, Frank went to the place of the guy who discovered them with his acoustc guitar and while he was cooking pasta in the kitched Frank gave a performance. Surely this has nothing to do with it.
Can someone explain these "Kitchen tapes" to me? I don't want to die stupid.

Kitchen Tapes. I believe Frank Black and Joey recorded these three songs together. That's the extent of my knowledge.

Then what the hell are they doing together with the rest, which was recorded with a full band (Workman/Feldman/Vincent). Was Joey present at the gig and then as an encore Frank and him played these songs after the offical recording was over and so they are just available as bad audience bootlegs?
Dear God, somone put me out of my misery! |

OK, I'm going to add this to the FAQ, cause it's come up a couple of times and my fingers are tired. Here's the notes from my copy--it's the UK release and titled "Frank Black: The Black Sessions Live In Paris plus The Kitchen Tapes."
"Fall 1995, Los Angeles
This is a recording of a national French radio show called Les Black Sessions presented by Bernard Lenoir. The shows go out live from an extremely air conditioned Paris soundstage. This performance was during a week long run we did in a club called L'Arapahoe, and includes the touring line-up of Californians Eric Drew Feldman, Nick Vincent, and Lyle Workman. For trivia's sake I should mention that the CD release contains the entire performance as it was heard by the studio audience but not the broadcast's audience, who heard about five songs less because of the length of the radio show. Beside the music you can hear some horrible French being spoken by me, a dedication to the night clerk at our hotel, who made a heck of a Kir Royale.
Brian Guthrie at Anoise Annoys had wanted me to include something special for the U.K. release, and I suggested a boot-leg quality extra track or two. My good friend Joey Santiago came by for a cigar and a little jam in my kitchen and we recorded a song called Jumping Beans, about Mexican jumping beans, and a time travelling tale called Modern Age.
Frank Black"
So there you have it--a little something extra for the fans. |

This might just be the place to add that there is also a secret version of 'Abstract Plane' there, which is really cool. (although there is already another version ofAbstract Plain with the full band on the record :-) |

If anyone happens to have an extra copy of this CD, please email me. I will pay a lot of money for it. There are currently none on ebay I don't think |

For completists the notes on my vinyl copy say:
Tracks 20 + 21 (Modern Age & Jumping Beans) Recorded live and direct to DAT in Frank's kitchen Los Angeles, where he was aided and abetted by Joey Santiago.

I don't know anything about the Kitchen Tapes, but man-oh-man is that acoustic version of Abstract Plain nice. Really one of the most pure and beautiful recordings of Frank Black's. I had that CD for about a year before I realized it was at the end. |

I don't think it is really that terribly rare. I have a copy and I have seen it in not so excellent record stores in the US. |

I bought the "blue" version when it was released several years ago. It was the price of a normal cd (about $13) while the same store also had the black colored import version (same songs/performance -minus- the Kitchen Tapes) right next to it for $35!! Good thing I waited for the blue version

I picked the UK version up for about 3 quid in Virgin.... but it's not something you see around often. Whatever happened to Frank Black Direct website??? That was pretty good for picking up stuff like that. Is it still possible to buy Franks cd singles?
So Black Sessions got 1/5.... it was Black Sessions and COR that made go and buy Franks back catalogue.

My mom bought me a copy off of eBay when she was on her hardcore eBay binge...have no idea what she paid for it, but it was brand new, still sealed. It didn't play at first cause somehow the CD got a film of some shit or other on it and I had to clean it up with lense cleaner. Weird.

I don't know if I have blue or black, but it was around $15 and has the Kitchen Tapes. I don't think it has a secret "Abstract Plain". |

i got it at Best Buy, probably some time around 1995.. so it wasn't rare then..
sadly, this is one of those CD's that got away (lost or stolen)..
that abstract plain version is the best.. and the kitchen tapes version of "modern age" is better than the album version in my opinion.. despite how one-off it sounds. |

Is this CD a bootleg or is it an official release? Also, speaking of rare CD's, I know it's easy to find on ebay and I finally got mine a couple of weeks ago, but are there any plans to ever re-release Cult of Ray and why is it the only Frank CD that's out of print |

It's an official 4AD release. I don't think it was ever properly released in the US, only imported. I would guess that COR is out of print because it was the only album they released through American Recordings, and I guess they decided not to continue to press it.

Ive recently seen a COR that is a completely different packing to the one i have. I figured that it had been rereleased, although I do have the bonus disk version, which might make a difference. COR is a fucking great album.

I was at the record store once and they have COR cd that looked basically the same, but the back was a little different. They had some sticker on it saying how it was a "rare" release, I think it was pressed on a different label, but I don't remember for sure. |

You have the black version with the frank name on the letter blocks and the other version has the three extra songs on it and has a blue cover with franks face on it. Two countrys releases. One french and one UK. |

Secret version of Abstract Plain - it's just an extra track attatched to the Blue version. And I said "just," which totally does this version of Abstract Plain NO justice whatsoever. It's a beautiful rendition. One of my favorite Frank Black songs performed in an acoustic / studio setting. Awesome.

---Mine too. Tried three different ones at Blockbuster Music in Memphis, and all three had that same crap on the cd and wouldn't play, so I never bought it. Lens cleaner in the store didn't work to get it off, either. WTF???
