A review by Joe Muggs, 6th Sept 2003, Daily Telegraph (no rating or title):
Frank Black and the Catholics Show Me Your Tears, Cooking Vinyl, £14.99
"I can't understand personal suffering. I have a good time making my records." So said Frank Black (then known as Black Francis) when he split up the mighty Pixies in 1993, just as they seemed on the brink of commercial success to match their cult adulation.
Judging by this album, he has come to understand personal suffering only too well. In the Pixies, his inhuman howls spoke of UFOs, sea goddesses and Dalí movies over insanely innovative guitar backdrops; a decade later, he is a subdued country troubadour, telling deeply personal tales of divorce, drink and the heartache of the road.
This is classic Americana – recalling Leonard Cohen, Gram Parsons, early 1970s Stones and the Band – sometimes played straight, sometimes distorted into an angry guitar haze. Though it's music of regret, Frank and the Catholics drag from it a kind of sozzled, celebratory boogie. He may have been suffering, but one suspects he's still having a good time making records, so pour a good shot of rye and join him. Joe Muggs
