does anybody think that FB is following an album progression not too unlike bowie during the 70s? this is, of course, a good thing.
i have bowies back catalogue, and from listening to all his 70s albums (right up to low - not a fan of lodger) it is clear that all of his albums varied in content to such an extent that that true fans had to 'adapt' to the new styles. maybe similar to frank - i mean i would not usually listen to roots.. but i do find BLD so compelling and different from, say, pistolero. i dont mean this in that FB will soon be collaborating with brian eno... but does anybody think that FBs style over - say - the next 4 albums will change again? heres hoping that he doesnt go 'drum and bass,' yikes.
maybe not - but let me know what you lot think. cheers

Yes, Frank changes quite a bit. Now he sort of changes on waves, like, they'll be 2 or 3 albums in a row that have a similiar vibe before slowly morphing into something else. I think his most drastic stylistic changes came with Bossanova and Trompe, then his first solo albums, then the first Catholics album.
Right now Frank is sort of in an area similiar to where he was when he started out (naturally the music is very different) but he's making very natural 'live in the studio' music, which is what Come on Pilgrim to me sounds like. And don't tell me if you didn't sing songs like "Bullet" and "Chip Away Boy" in a slightly higher pitched voice and upped the tempo by 20 percent, you wouldn't have songs surprisingly resembling the Pixies. Of course, that's only on a few select songs. I'm just wondering where Frank will be in 5 years. The way I see it, he might be a solo folk type guy, or he might be making music similiar to a new style he's recently discovered(or re-discovered) and fallen in love with (sort of like his recent embrace of Dylan/Rolling Stones, which he probably listens to now more than he did 10 years ago), or maybe he'll venture back to a more produced keyboard heavy sound, albeit with some new stylistic flourishes that would somehow make it sound very unlike anything he's done before. I really can't wait to see actually. |

Most definately. His albums are constantly changing, not huge changes per album, but enought to be able to say that Frank Black and the Catholics is very different from DW. But of course, im pretty sure that his music is expected to evlove so i wasnt very surprised to hear his new sound. Alot like the pixies did. |
