I've always found it strange that the pixies were more accepted/successful in Europe than they were in the US. Americans always seem to be a more rock orintated(?) audience than europeans (by the way Im irish and don't think of my self as "european")Remember the whole Disco Sucks thing in the 70's (I don't, but have read about it) and ever since Nirvana hit in 91 there has been alot of mostly horibble rock bands(creed, staind, the calling ect, ect) selling millions of records in america. Anyone got any theories?
Was it just a case of right sound wrong decade for the pixies? or were they a bit too quirky for the american audience? |

I think you answered your question, a lot of HORRIBLE rock bands selling millions of records in america. To be honest, Americans all don't have bad taste, radio programmers just think they do. If the Pixies got played on the radio they would have sold just as many as all those guys. I've never met someone who didn't like at least a handful of Frank/Pixies tunes, never. And i'm talking people of all walks, not just music buffs. |

I don't reckon its much to do with radio programmers, as when I was in the States I thought that the radio far surpassed the shite that weve got in Britain.... like I heard b-sides of Rage Against The Machine and other rarely heard music... in fact I thought that American radio was cool, alot cooler than British radio.... Ive never heard Pixies on the radio in Britain at all.... So I reckon that maybe its down to the difference in tastes in US and Europe. An example is the British band (if you can call them that) Bush, who are not popular at all in UK but pretty huge in the states (or so I'm led to believe by US pals).
I was always under the impression that Pixies were big in the States... |

Maybe Europe just has better taste...maybe the US is more about selling records than it is selling GOOD records...maybe Europe just picks up on better music. It seems like a lot of bands have an "alright" reputation in America, but can be absolutely huge in Europe. Sonic Youth had a lot more support in Europe than they did stateside back when they first were around...Nirvana probably did as well. Maybe there's a lack of really good acts within Europe and they enjoy importing new acts to fill their clubs, while over here we have so many clubs and so many bands that it's nothing big when another band comes around to play...you know? I just always was under the impression that Europeans and Australians have better taste in rock music than the general populous of America does...just turn on your radio any time and you'll hear what i mean...THAT'S the music for the majority. |

I heard the Pixies a lot on UK radio. John Peel played them from the Come on Pilgrim days. The show before also started to about the time of Doolittle. Unfortunately Peel hardly ever plays Frank Black, ignoring the Teenage Fanclub session.
Another reason for the popularity here must have been that 4AD, a great label, pushed the Pixies quite hard - they prmoted the Pixies much more than they ever did Frank's first two solo albums. I wish they had promoted Frank in the same way - he would be much more popular now. |
