Frank, this is your therapist. I’m worried about you, Frank. I thought we were making progress. We were working through your problems; you were happy sometimes. Then you disappear for months without a word, and one day I get this record in the mail. This isn’t your usual kind of depression. You’re not wallowing in some terminal Ian Curtis pit-of-suicidal-despair, but it’s not a case of mall-punk histrionics, either. No, this is celebratory suffering–the kind you toast with a sad grin and a bottle of whiskey in some dusty Nevada highway bar.
You’re too old for this, Frank–being drunk at three pm, hammering out old, epic, vaguely country-fried rock tunes with a boogie piano. Have you been hanging out with Bob Mould again? He’s a bad influence, you know. Not that the album isn’t good. Frankly, Frank, it’s excellent. This is the stuff of the Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan–hell, there’s even some Dire Straits-like nostalgia in "My Favorite Kiss." No one does this properly anymore, at least not without some overbearing sense of irony. But it’s not healthy. Can you send me another copy?

Interesting review. Don't quite know what to make of it, though. What's wrong with being drunk by 3 pm?
