To date, the sales are as follows:
Come On Pilgrim: 145,000 Surfer Rosa: 450,000 Doolittle: 740,000 Bossanova: 375,000 Trompe Le Monde: 240,000
Okay, I just made those numbers up. |

I really wish their was a website where you could find out album sales. Perhaps there is.
I've heard that Dog In The Sand sold around 28,000 copies. If so, that's a damn shame. I mean, that was in 2000. Think about all the albums that sold MUCH better than that: Bloodhound Gang "Hooray For Boobies", the Lifehouse album, Lenny Kravitz greatest hits, Britney Spears Oops album, SR-71's album, Dynamite Hack "Superfast" (I must admit, I like the Dynamite Hack album a lot). |

Its alot more in the US than in the UK to get gold, due to the poplulation. I dont know if I mentioned it before but John Malta has a gold record for Bossanova and Trompe that was issued to Master COntrol studios for the sale of 200,000 plus records. The studio gave them to him when they closed their doors. |

I also have seen RIAA gold for Doolittle that was presented in US, so, maybe the #'s aren't as bad as some thought.
Some marketing type sold it on Ebay, but, it was definitely RIAA not some knockoff. |

Why wouldn't Frank receive the gold record? Or did he? |

Because the record is actually the studio's accomplishment. It has nothing to do with the artist.
Oh wait, seems I got that backwards. Now I'm confused. |

everyone in the bands gets discs, plus anyone else they think is relevant. Hell, I even got an Oasis Platinum disc for one of their singles five years ago! |

Yeah, but don't the record companies have to shell out some cash for certification? |

you don't shell out cash for certification - when I worked in distribution all you had to do was fax the BPI (this is for the UK, it could be different for the US) and tell them that the record in question had shipped a total of x units so should therefore be certified whatever level is relevant.
the only cash bit is the discs - most of the time the vinyl ones are old 12" singles re-sprayed (some oasis ones were overstocks I think!) and getting them framed which costs £60 - £80 per disc.
as far as sales figures go, I can't remember which album, but one of the Pixies albums went Gold a couple of years ago in the UK - one of the last ones to get there... there were discs made up and I think there's one in our office, I'll check on Monday |

"All certification audits are conducted for a fee. If multiple sales levels are simultaneously certified, only one audit certification fee is charged. Companies requesting their initial certification audit must incur any travel expenses by the RIAA®'s independent auditor. The charge for certifications is $350 for RIAA® member companies. Non-members are charged $450 per certification, which must be pre-paid. Companies will be charged the full audit certification fee for any requests that do not meet the Gold® and Platinum® Program requirements. A 30-day time limit is set for pending certifications. If a full audit cannot be completed within this time, a charge of $100 will be rendered to member companies and $200 to non-member companies. " |
