Another great review - did a member of frankblack.net write this one?:
I'm about to make a statement that is going to piss off a lot of people but if I didn't it just wouldn't be a "Cary" review would it? I'm not making this statement just to incite controversy either. I really mean this when I say it.
I like Frank Black's solo material better than his work with the Pixies.
There, I said it. Take aim and fire.
Not to take anything away from the Pixies because they were a phenomenal band that broke new ground with every release. I just find that with every new record that Frank Black (formerly Black Francis) puts out, he seems to be enjoying himself more and more and that feeling is infectious.
Last year's double whammy of Devil's Workshop and Black Letter Days went mostly unnoticed by the music community as did 2001's brilliant Dog in the Sand. Still, Frank Black doesn't really seem to care. He's got his musical niche and he's perfectly happy where he is. What's better is that he's not spending his post-Pixies career trying to maintain any image or sense of importance. He knows how great his former band was and I'm more than sure he's proud of the accomplishments they made. He's just figured out one thing that 90% of rock musicians never figure out. It's not worth the trouble to reclaim your former glory. Life's too short, there's too much fun to be had and goddamn it you are a musician. You're not working at a factory job or worse, as a purchasing manager for an international company (cough, cough). You do what you love for a living so go out there and have fun.
Show Me Your Tears is another album of great rock and roll that will probably be ignored by the music community. You, however, should pick it up and see what they're not telling you about. Opening with the fifties influenced "Nadine" Black revs things up immediately with a song that starts with bounding, bouncing drums and ends in a psycho guitar freakout.
Black's band is tight as a belly shirt on a pregnant Madonna. Joined once again by former Pixie Joey Santiago on guitar as well as Ex-Wall of Voodoo frontman Stan Ridgeway, Black has the musicians he needs to be able to play whatever comes into his twisted little mind. Subsequently, he jumps styles effortlessly covering dirty piano blues ("New House of the Pope"), Band-tinged boogie ("Horrible Day), pedal steel country ("Goodbye Lorraine") and even bossanova ("This Old Heartache"). This band tackles it with a wit and an eagerness that leaps out of the speakers.
My personal favorite track on this album is "Coastline". It's an intimate acoustic song with a lonely harmonica backing. Black sings, "There's a perfect explanation for the shit that I've been in / As soon as I find out I'll let you know." It's a song about missed opportunities and the desire to fix past mistakes. It's a song that's much more personal than anything found on any Pixies release and that probably sums up why I like Frank Black's solo material as much as I do.
This record comes out on Sept. 9, so while you still have another week to wait, go pick up Dog In the Sand and see what you've been missing. I guarantee you'll drop major coinage to get the rest of the catalog.

fantastic review! very well said. it is the pick of the week on the music misfits site. love how the writer compares frank to his former pixies glory days and why frank's a complete musician. a buddy of mine compared nadine the same way when we saw the catholics live in winnipeg last spring "what was that song? psycho guitar freakout!!!" |

I have to admit, the past couple of reviews do sound like they have been written by a forum member.... great to see someone claiming that FB&C are better than the Pixies.

This isn't America's Funniest Home Videos.
But Simpsons aside, that is a great review and made me feel good all over. |

so, this being his sixth album steadily WITH the catholics -why would the reviewer waste our time telling us how much he likes Frank's solo work compared to w/pixies?? is he setting us up for a review of a recent solo show or a retro review of'teenager of the year'??? granted he writes the tunes, sings and drives the rhythm strings -but this is a band, right?

I didn't like it. why waste our time with talking about the Pixies. And he barely mentiones anything about the songs ('bar blues' ? what kind of description is that?) |
