I just found out Jonathan Richman is playing a show 15 minutes from my house on October 1st. It's only 10 bucks so I am going. I also have to write a couple reviews for an American Music class I'm taking, so this will be an oppurtunity to actually see a concert I WANT to go to (instead of going to a concert just for the sake of reviewing it).

To the point.. I don't have any of his albums and I don't know much about him. I want to hear some of his music before the concert, so any suggestions as to a couple albums I should look in to getting?

Jonathan, Te Vas A EMocionar is clearly the best album.

Conflicting views. We need someone to break the tie (or request more albums, then we'd get Vovat to moderate a survivor.)

You wanna arm wrestle for it? I do love Vampire Girl, but "I, Jonathan" has "I Was Dancing In the Lesbian Bar," and that's pretty hard to beat.

"I, Jonathan" all the way. You wanna appreciate the man in English before you hear him sing in goofy, broken Spanish.

I'm afraid I'm going to have to strip you of your right to express opinions; here's why:

1. FACT: Jonathan is a goofy, broken kinda guy. And that's my highest praise given out.

2. FACT: When listening to JR, it's best to get the crazy stuff first because then you're drawn in by the crazy power. If you listen to I, Jonathan, you may just be turned off because it's so damn smooth, it's easily misjudged as "poppy".

3. FACT: Spanish is a much cooler language than English. Listen to native spanish speakers and you'll quickly notice that they are much more cooler and intelligent sounding than your average english conversationalist.

but I, Jonathan is a solid album too so you really can't go wrong with either

Well I might have to get both. I don't think I'd be turned off by a "damn smooth/poppy" album though. Even if I was I'd probably want to hear this Spanish one as well. Isn't the dude English? So what is the story behind Te Vas A Emocionar exactly? Is it all Spanish vocals? Spanish is a prettier language than English.

Mereubu used this subtle approach with me. I listen to it nearly every other day. My four year old likes to clap along with "Tandem Jump".

My vote is biased, though, because this is the only Richman album I own.

Oh good! I'm glad you like it. My four year old loves Tandem Jump, too. There are so many child-friendly Jonathan songs that I recently went through my whole JoJo collection and made a kid CD.

I bet you would also like "Jonathan Goes Country." No pressure!

Jojo English? New English, man! He's from Boston. He's got a song called "New England" that's just fantastic - "I've seen old Israel's arid plains - well, it's magnificent, but so's Maine!"

Well I went to Best Buy today and they didn't have ANY Jonathan Richman. I was dissapointed, to say the least. Yeah yeah I should support my local indie store, but I haven't found any good ones around here yet. I don't think ebay or half.com has much Richman either.

I am in tune with your ways. The old reverse psychology ploy. It won't, I mean, it isn't.... OK, I give.
I'm guessing that "Dancing in a Lesbian Bar" didn't make it on the kid's CD.
