Good day everyone. I had a thought: perhaps we could start a "record of the month club" of sorts, not unlike a book club, where in a group of people all listen to a record and then get together to dicuss it. We could choose an album (somehow), give everyone a week or two to spin it, and then all register our thoughts and feelings on it. There are some logistical problems, namely how would everyone aquire the album. My first thought of course was that we could just download the album, which of course some would not appreciate, and some are unable to do. A solution to the first situation is this: if we all download the album and like it, everyone who downloaded it (and liked it) would buy it. Certainly there is no way to make anyone buy it, but I'm sure this would generate at least a few sales. Not that I'm trying to "generate sales" for any particular record, I would just like to discuss an album with people. This is different than just posting and saying "I heard such and such record, what do you think", cause it's all like a club and stuff, and I wanna be in a club. So, what do you fine folks think? |

I'd go for it.
Can't say I would be able to help with figuring either logistics or legality, though.

I say we buy it in an indie music store and buy it...support local music! Mayhaps we pick a somewhat older album and buy it used?

I think this is cool. I always want to find good older bands, or new bands that I haven't heard of. My new band of the month is Wilco. I got Yankee Hotel Foxtrot first. I enjoyed it.. so I got Summer Teeth and I really like this album. The only reason I've gotten into Wilco is because of hearing people like Jim, and I think Mike, talk about them.

Sure, we can nominate whatever album, and aquire it through whatever means. The key is, everyone participating has to listen to the whole album several times, and be able to discuss it in depth. And if you can't, you're taken out back and strung up by your nether bits and tickled. To death. The album can be new, old, whatever. Come on everyone, sign up! |

If we have to start with an album BLT already owns, let's start with a Barbara Streisand album.

Is it cool if one already owns and knows the record of the month or are these records suppose to be new to all of us? I think it's a cool idea. |

Well, I think that it'll probably be picked Monday or Tues (beginning of Sept). Probably we'll just let Mike pick the first one or something, although maybe he wants to take suggestions and go from there. I don't know if we should worry about whether one person has heard the record in question or not, especially since it would help the person recommending to know it's good before we all go for it. But I don't care. I'm just an observer and this is Mike's gig. |

Maybe to start it off, we should pick an album that PROBABLY most people will have. And I'm not talking about Frank Black! Some classic album like a Beatles album (just an example of a band that about everybody knows and owns. And if you hate the Beatles then you probably shouldn't be part of this club. Though my friend doesn't like the Beatles and he loves Frank Black. I can see why some might think the Beatles cheesy. Some stuff is a little fruity, but most of it is quality. why is all this crap I'm saying in parenthesis? I should have just started a real sentence.)

How about Neil Young, Harvest? Or something I have in my limited collection here in China. I know it's a little selfish but I'd like to join in the discussion for a brief period before albums are picked which are unavailable in China?

I think the point is to expose ourselves to new music and have people to discuss what we think of it, how we feel about it, and so forth. So I'm not sure that there's really much point in doing something we all have. That said, I do not have Harvest and that would work fine for me personally, but maybe if most people have it or have heard it before then we should find something else? |

I say just pick an album; let the individuals decide how they want to obtain the album. I personally approve of downloading albums on the grounds that when I download an album or song, it's not necessarily the case that I was going to buy that music had I not downloaded it. So the artist can make a choice; either let me download the music so I can hear it and then maybe I'll buy some albums, maybe I won't. THe other option is that I just won't check out their music at all. I'm not going to spend 15 dollars on something if I don't even know if I'm going to like it or not. If it wasn't for downloading, I would've never attended 3 Reverend Horton Heat shows in the past 2 years and I wouldn't have bought a Rev t-shirt and I wouldn't have bought Lucky 7 either. There's my Sunday rant. |

Well, my original intent was to choose an album that no one had heard (that could be difficult, depending on the amount of people involved). My feeling is, a person who is very fond of a record recomends it, we all give it a spin, then register our opinions. I'm happy to go with majority vote (so far: Harvest - 3 votes, Earthquake Glue - 2 votes). I would lean toward EG, as I already own it, but I'm happy either way. Option 3 is for me to pick another record entirely, either something I've heard, or something new to me. Or I could not pick at all. What say you? (I hate to be all "in charge" and junk). |

I say go for one that not a lot of people have. That's my vote. If you're going to recommend it, though, you should probably have heard it, otherwise we're just shooting in the dark. Voting's not a horrible idea either. I'd be fine with either of those two, or something from a group like Spoon that not too many people seem to know. I suppose if it were my choice, I'd do up A Series of Sneaks or maybe even Telephono given that it's basically a Britt Daniel version of the Pixies. Of course, all the records are good, so... |

Mr. Jim R. McLuckie Esquire, Mr. Barrett was interesting, but Rick Wright, who played the keys for the Pink Floyd, should really be recognized imo. His few sole writing compositions for the Floyd are excellent, even the song "It Would Be So Nice". How about some Rick Wright? Not most people own Rick Wright, but many people own the Pink Floyd albums, so I think that my decision of a Rick Wright solo album would suit everyone. However, don't take my word for it. I don't even have any stars.

What do you think of it so far..... it is probably too early to give an opinion as it is one of those albums which take time. Any opinions so far?

I've owned "Harvest" for quite awhile now. It's one of my favorite NY albums, although my collection of his music isn't very extensive. I don't really know what to say about it...this is kind of like doing a book report. Yes, it's a good album. Um, what else..? "The dichotomy of Neil's vocals, combined with the rural lyrical imagery of the album's tone, produces a ethereal, dreamy quality to the listener..." that sort of thing??? |

It took me a while to get into Harvest, as Neil Youngs voice takes a while to get into... but once you get past that it is a great album. I have it on minidisk with no tracklisting (so the songs I name might be wrong), but Heart of Gold and A Man needs a maid are great songs.... in fact the whole album is pretty spot on if you ask me.
This is one of the albums which is justifiably in the BBC top 100 albums of all time.
