Dear all,
My 15 year old sister, along with a quite a lot of other people, lost (among other) her Hotmail and Neopets account to some smartass guy who goes around chat channels under cracked nicknames to gather answers to 'the secret question' (for example "what is your pet's name"), which grants you the password to the account. He then changes the password and seems to be having a lot of fun at that.
I'd like to teach this rat a good lesson. All we have though is an IP address. Is there anyone here able and prepared to give the guy a good cyberkick in the butt? Thanks a lot in advance,
Jelle

Track down where his IP comes from and report him to your ISP and Hotmail. I'm sure they won't be too kind. |

Very true, but it's still important that the guy be punished or he'll keep on doing it. Your sister was punished enough for doing something so silly as using a publically available name/number/whatever of personal significance as a password. He needs to be punished in some other way. I did create what was called an ANSI-bomb back in the BBSing days which completely and irrevocably wiped out a guy's hard drive after he hacked into my account and posed as me posting many really offensive messages. But I was young and vengeful, and from what I heard through others, he stopped hacking people after he had to buy a new hard drive. I don't feel any remorse for his lost hard drive/data, I did nothing to him and he hacked in to my accounts, nevermind parading around under the alias "Hitler". But I've grown more mature since then too.
Dave makes the best point. Talk to Hotmail, your ISP, and if you can, find out his and register a complaint with them. At the very least he'll have to change providers, though he'll probably just keep doing it under a different name and with some IP masking. |

Heh... yeah, just me and the sysop. We had a 'chain' BBS with 15 lines and ringdown, but it was all about ratios and a different group of people than frequented many of the other -306- boards I was on. But we did have some pretty cool BBSes here in the city with callers from around the world, ringdown, blazing fast 14.4/28.8/57.6 (pick your era), and lots of cool chatting/files. We were also home to Quad-P, though I don't know if you're familiar with that group (they've since dispersed although some groups are still around). Anyway, it was a cool scene. Did you guys have a decent scene in Vic? |

Which reminds me, I'd be amiss if I didn't mention I had my own board, though membership was private, with all sorts of goodies. Hangar i8. Hence the nickname, "The Airman". Well, that and my love of flying. Ran it on about 3 different packages, though the names are fading from my mind... RemoteAccess, Vision/X, and ummm... EzBoard or something? Complete with BlueWave mailer frontend. Press Esc twice... |

so would it be sufficient to report his IP number to Hotmail and his ISP? Thanks everyone
This Is It: I agree with that, but revenge is too big a word in this case. Just want to give him a good scare. He doesn't seem like a professional, either... |

Yeah, I remember I used to crack passwords of U of S students back in my 28.8 VT102 days to get on the internet. Besides IRC, I have memories of the NASA webpage and downloading a satellite picture of Mars for an elementary school report (you couldn't see it until you downloaded it, which took near 10 mins) and playing ASCII chess with a professor from Sweden and winning. The internet has come a long way.
It's good to talk to someone who has even heard of things like RemoteAccess and BlueWave. Most people haven't, and sometimes I wonder if I just dreamt the whole thing up. :) |

I didn't get into BBSs until the whole post-BBS phase in the 90s. By then it was all telnet BBS. One local ISP gave like, 5 hours free access to their BBS per month with a dialup account. It was interesting, and I bet I would have had a whole lot of fun with them if I weren't like, 5 years old in the 80s. My first online experience was with Prodigy in 92 or so. 2400bps power, baby! I remember upgrading to 14.4 when we had AOL and i was shocked at how 'fast' things downloaded...jesus. I remember spending hours and days trying to get mIRC to work with AOL 2.5 until I finally found out that 2.5 didn't support winsock apps, so I had to use the very-slow-on-a-386 AOL 3.0 just to get on IRC...I remember my first experience on IRC, it blew me away. what a nerd.

Yeah, some guy was selling a matter transporter at a local garage sale for 49 cents, but it only transports matter, so...
Seriously, though, can you imagine how such a thing would change the world? Cars? Planes? Boats? Trains? Mass transit? Highways? Freight handling companies? The entire transportation sector. Nevermind oil companies, etc, etc.
Too much money involved for such a thing to come to light. Just the oil industry alone has stalled the fuel cell for years though they've slowly accepted they won't be able to do so forever.
Still, I'd like to see it, if only to see how many subsidiaries Air Canada could spawn in that 'division' and what sorts of awful names and colour schemes they'd be given. |
