A recording trick to get that tinny sound is to boost the 5k range, and drop EVERYTHING else. I've used it recording, does the trick. |

Yes, His Kingly Cave is about FB's trip to Graceland while on shrooms. It's an established fact that he's affirmed in reviews.

Score! Muchas gracias, El Barto. Figuring out Frank's songs beats the hell out of crossword puzzles. Once you crack them, they always seem to be about something very specific.
Has anyone seen any reviews of BLD/DW that weren't composed by monkeys with typewriters? It would be nice to read one. |

re: kingly cave, mereubu is correct; charles said exactly this in the Splendid E-zine interview; not only was it literally exactly about a bad shroom trip to Graceland, Charles confessed that the couple in the story was His Frankness and a girlfriend, back when he was very young and less wise.
re: czar, yes, it's John Denver, but also a bit prophetic now that several dudes have gone into space for cash whereas the Russians turned down Mr. Fill-Up-My-Senses.
re: Ramona, it's absolutely about the Ramones.. a long ago website interview had Charles saying that the Menuto (sp?) reference was his wish for the Ramones, that they'd just replace each departing member with a young guy, like that latino boy-group... |

What is the song Angst about? Who did he steal the licks from back in 1986?

the song angst is about the band angst. they were an sst band (along with black flag, the minutemen, the meat puppets...) fb has also covered an angst song - "some things" - he played it on the 2001 tour. quite tuneful and groovy.
there's not much information online about angst - i think most of their catalog is out of print.

In the live footage from Brixton Academy Frank actually uses a CB mic taped next to his "normal" mic for songs from Trompe. The effect was awesome.
I know that Peter Radiator is a real person of some sort of notoriety. Does anyone know who this person is?

Peter Radiator is not anyone's actual name (as far as I know), but from the moment I heard Frank's "I Gotta Move" I recognized the character as a euphamistic psuonym for the late Peter Ivers. Peter was a unique and visionary musician and artist who actually composed and recorded the haunting song "In Heaven" (or the "Lady In The Radiator" song as it is sometimes known) from David Lynch's debut feature Eraserhead.
That track was later covered both live and in the studio by the Pixies.
He is perhaps best known (although not by name) as the host of New Wave Theatre, the seminal underground music TV show which aired nationally in syndication as part of the original Night Flight anthologies on the old USA Network in the early 1980s. That show featured extremely freaky-deaky artists performing live in front of a small studio audience of devoted fans and true believers.
Ivers released a few low-key solo LPs of his own which mixed Classical composition with electronic and synthetic sounds and jazz leanings, and collaborated with artists such as John Cale. Sadly, in 1983, he was brutally murdered in his California home in what eventually was termed a robbery. However, there has always been a swirl of controversy surrounding his death, and a host of peculiar theories abound as to a possible motive. To my knowledge the killer has never been brought to justice or the case conclusively solved.
The original owner of Fort Apache studios (and an old friend of Ivers) unaware of his demise, attempted to arrange a meeting between the artist and Black Francis, once he heard the Pixies' version of the quite-obscure "In Heaven", but it was not meant to be.
In what must surely be a hallmark of Frank's idiosyncratic flair for clever turns of phrase and the manipulation of tenses and lyrical perspectives (a la Dylan's Blood On The Tracks LP), "I Gotta Move" also shifts seamlessly back and forth to a rather oblique –but quite poetically concise– retelling of the untimely and mysterious death of Marvin John "Jack'' Nance, the actor who is best known as playing the lead role of Henry in Eraserhead.
On December 30, 1996, he was found dead in his South Pasadena, California apartment. It soon came to light that the night before, the mercurial Nance (who was known for being a tad ornery and argumentative with strangers) was seen in a loud altercation –which came to blows– outside a doughnut shop across the street from his home.
His death was officially listed as suspicious by the police after detectives noticed his blackened eye. The cause of the fight with the two mystery men (described as Hispanics in their mid-20s) remains unknown. What is known is that Nance suffered blunt force trauma to his head (presumably in the fistfight), and that likely contributed to him dying hours later.
The "Jack who coiffed it" refers to Nance's impossibly high hairdo as seen in Eraserhead, and the assertion that "talkin' back is a bad offense" is clearly a reference to the actor's reputation for goading others with his quick wit.
The fact that Peter Radiator "got bashed", but it "wasn't for the cash" seems to be an affirmation that Frank doubts the official version of events surrounding his demise – or at least acknowledges them.
I like Frank's song, I like Ivers' as well, I like the film, and in particular I admire Nance's tenacity and peculiar sense of dramatic timing. So I guess that's why I chose this handle.

Thanks for the insight Peter Radiator. I had caught the Jack Nance ("Jack who coiffed it") reference some time back but never in a million years would have figured out the Peter Radiator one. What a movie, Eraserhead. First time I watched it my wife was pregnant with our first born--big mistake. Hearing those piercing cries...and seeing that little monstrosity...Scared the hell out of me, a soon to be expecting father. |

Thank you kind sir. I have wondered for years. I have heard Frank speak of the character of Peter Radiator (in the same breath as Jonathon Richman) before. Your time and effort to answer my question is much appreciated.

"Don't know how the whole thing started, There was a crowd and then it parted." (The "crowd" is the Pixies?) "Don't know if I'll ever go back, It's a long way across all of this black." ("All of this black" being the name change from Black Francis to Frank Black?)
Just a guess. |

someone asked about some famous actress/singer being called "built for speed" - the only thing i can think of is the lyrics to Long Tall Sally, the famous Little Richard song (which the Beatles later covered)
Long Tall Sally She's Built for Speed She's Got Everything that Uncle John needs oh baby...
Maybe thats what you're thinking of? -Brian
