I think SMYT might just be the best yet; at least of the Catholics albums. I'm starting to get to that point where I've listened to the album about 15-20 times and the songs are really familiar; I think Devil's Workshop is a masterpiece, but I think this one is better. 2 songs I really like right now are Coastline and The Snake.

SMYT is easily FBs best album to date in my humble opinion (beats dog by a whisker). its brilliant - especially after a few pints too - but im sure you know that already. cant wait to buy my copy in september! and see him (twice) in october.

Isn't the topic kind of the same as "SMYT...the best one yet?" Although I love it too, so we can talk about it in every thread for all I care... |

mines was here first
as for whether or not this is his best album or even whether it's a good album...you don't like country? you don't like twang and pedal steel and harmonicas? let go of the olive branch. don't be afraid to enjoy something new once in awhile. people enjoy the comfort in repetition, but enjoyment of the unknown is the great escape. I was so disapointed with Black Letter Days when I first heard it. But I was guilty of being close-minded and guilty of not having faith in Frank Black's ability tickle my ears with a new style of music. After a few dozen listens, his albums always win me over. |

Same with me.... when I first heard BLD and DW I thought that they were nothing special, but then after a couple of days of listening I was hooked (as is the same with most FB albums, except for COR which took me a fair while to like).
I should have the album soon, I cannot wait!

That's pretty much how I've felt about all of his albums. At first glance, they may be a little disappointing. But after a few listens, they each become an instant classic to me. His music tends to grow on you like some really nasty alien fungus that takes over your body and consumes you whole. |

I new I was going to like SMYT, when I realised I was consistently hunting out the new stuff on the two live albums I recently downloaded from hearitagain.net (well worth the price of admission btw).
Its pretty unusual to get straight into a FB&Cs album as you say, and there's always that worrying first few listens when you worry that maybe this one just isn't gonna cut it.
This time - SMYT well it's different - more like the first time I heard a very bad copy of Doolittle - you just know its right
It's a beautiful road movie of an album, painful, joyful, emotionally tiring and uplifting at the same time. It's listens like the most eventful of journeys, tearful, drunken, hilarious, but ultimately life affirming.
And if thats a bit to gushing - I still think Pistelero is mostly a load of crap (evil cackle)
My head was feeling scared, but my heart was feeling free |

Ive heard that SMYT is a little more friendly to the ears on first listen.... not too sure if that is a good thing though. Will find out tonight when I get home and play it for the first time. I'll be finished and home in about an hour and 20 mins..... c'mon!
