Mojo gives the album four stars (out of five) - the reviewer (Andrew Perry) obviously has not been a great fan of Frank's post Pixies career, but rates this one highly. I love the Blood on the Tracks reference -reminds me a bit of the Steve Lamacq interview? I think Mr Perry would benefit from exploring Frank's solo/Catholics career a bit more though:
"Seventh - and best - outing for the former Pixie, guests include Joey Santiago and Stan Ridgway."
Perhaps every genius songwriter, if pushed to post-idolisation/post-relationship extremes, has a Blood on the Tracks in them. Never before a man for straight-down-the-line lyricism when he could indulge in another Roswell fantasy, Frank Black delivers his albeit skewed version thereof. Much like Dylan circa 1974, he has seemed increasingly stumped by the task of matching former Pixies glories, trundling out countless sketches rather than the rockin' masterworks of old. This, however, is a very different record. Though far from the explosive garage sound of Surfer Rosa , here our man is palpably putting his back into the proceedings - apparently inspired by his separation from his wife. Hence there are malicious farewells (Goodbye Lorraine), boozy twangfests (new House of the Pope) and enough memorable moments to make this the first Catholics album worthy of your love and attention.

the Hotpress review(irish magazine) was along the same lines(finally frank has cracked it) and they liken him to iggy, bruce(but in this way, kind of negatively),nick cave(fronting the Willard Grant Conspiracy),josh ritter(what is hotpress's obsession with that guy?!?), and they say nadine is 'vintage Black' and horrible day is 'blacker than Black'. what the hell does that mean? anyway, the review begins with 'Anybody who though the man formerly known as Black Francis was trading past glories, think again. Show Me Your Tears is a shimmering and sometimes sneering statement of intent from the rejuvenated former Pixie, who sounds 20 years younger than he has on any of his previous solo outings, even if he has been overdosing on Johnny Cash records.' humph. kinda bittersweet, huh? anyway, whats wrong with Johnny Cash? it gave him 7/10.

Aren't you tired of the 'best since the Pixies' cliche'? I think we should add it to the 'standard Frank Black review':
Black is Back (In Black)
In 1989, the Pixies were the best rock band ever. Kurt Cubain namechecked them. The world seem before them, but Clack Francis could not get on with Kim Deal, and so he split the band and started a series of long and dull solo albums. Now, finally, Black returns with the best of his work since his highlights of the Pixies, an album that is less 'the Violent Femmes' then Johnny Cash, but still fun. It ain't THE PLANET OF SOUND, but it's not bad, either. |

I like the 7th solo album reference. I think this guy missed BLD/DW entirely - both had share of straight-down-the-line lyricism. Still, it is much better than the Q review.

I transcibed the whole review - it is a small review again. Incidentally, in last month's Mojo Surfer Rosa was named one of the 100 best guitar albums of all time - the guy who wrote about it was the very same Andrew Perry. (Are You Experienced was No. 1)
