The Wiz. Now, that was a landmark in theatrical achievement.

I can't say I like musicals, except for maybe "The Sound Of Music" or "Camelot." I need to see "Fiddler on the Roof" again; haven't seen that since I was little. I know that the music in them is supposed to be interpretive, and not "really" part of the movie, but I never could get over how all these people could just break into song, all knowing the words and all. It kind of always distracted from the rest of the movie. I guess I am just too contemporary minded, and have trouble looking at musicals as an entire presentation and not just a movie with people singing. You really have to change your mode of thinking, to be able to use that ambiguous, literary part of your mind that can appreciate the raw emotions behind a story, and not just follow the story itself. Sorry if no one knows what the fuck I'm talking about. It's hard to put into words. It's just, in today's media you mainly go to a movie and everything's laid out for you, and little or no time is spent analyzing or focusing on pivotal events in the movie, which people do through singing in musicals.

Quantum nonlocality does not prove that "signals" travel "faster than light." Rather, it shows that at a deep level of reality the speed of light as a limiting factor is irrelevant because phenomena are instantaneously connected regardless of distance.

Thank you.

That is all.

Yeah, that's definitely a big part, I think, of why people don't like musicals. It seems cheesy to have a bunch of people burst spontaneously into song. It's sort of like having a picture of some setting in black and white and then painting the colours that convey the emotions of that image. You still get the idea of what's going on, but the feeling has been drawn out of it without the colour. And sometimes you have no song or really stark, just as sometimes you have black & white photography and film despite technological advances 30-some years ago - it's all about setting the mood.

That said, the music often also tells the story, as in Fiddler with the opening setting up the backstory and what's going on. And sometimes it is cheesy and un-necessary to have music in certain parts and even distracting. Which is, I guess, what separates a good musical from a bad one.

No you did not.
Dean, did you watch Slingblade yet? And you were going to see it! On my very word alone.

See, you only hurt yourself by doing that. Fine, after you watch Fiddler, I'll watch SlingBling.

On another note, I watched Chicago last night and that was pretty decent too, though it could have done with probably one less song and a bit more plot development instead, in my opinion. But I'd still see Fiddler first. You can't compete with a classic.

Dean, when I see you at the Ween concert, I'm gonna kick your ass!
And just for the hell of it, I'm gonna kick Mike's too:)

I was a little busy this weekend myself, I'll watch it though, someday.

I've been rethinking the Ween concert because The Mollusk hasn't really grabbed me (yet) and I really get the feeling I'm not going to be a fan of their earlier stuff. Using words like 'dick' in a song haven't made me laugh since I was 12 and seem really, well, what's the word... pandering to a different crowd then I am, I guess. I just really dislike that aspect of them. Not that I don't have a sense of humour, I'm not offended, I just don't care for that.

So you're not going to go?
I think I'm gonna cry :(

There is alot of their stuff that is pretty rank, but some is not. Did you listen to homo rainbow yet? I love that song.

but I am very very very stoked to go to Modest Mouse next Tuesday, and to think I never would've known if not for this forum.

Well, we'll see. Modest Mouse I've never heard (though I've heard of them), but Mike's not a big fan and we generally have the same musical tastes, so I'm not sure that I'll go see them just 'cause they're big.

I tried with them, I swear. I downloaded all of "the Moon and Antartica" and I just couldn't get into it. His voice bothers me. I would recomend the new gbv record instead Jessie. Then a nice warm bath.

Ooooh I love MM.

Jessie, try Dramamine and Talkin Shit about a Pretty Sunset.

Dean you seem like you're in a foul mood today.

This building is definitely burning down.

Hey, I'm kinda whimsical....

I don't know Carolyn, I just didn't like 'em. To be fair, I should spend more time with them. But the concert is gonna be 20 bones! Frank was only 15! That's messed up.

Agreed. There's some screwed up math when that sort of thing happens. Then again, how much was Cher? :)

And I'll agree with (almost) anything you say as long as it's a Simpsons reference. Except that. I'm definitely whimsical. To the bone. I INVENTED the whole concept of whimsicality.

Jessie, you will not be dissapointed by the new record. It's very nice. Especially Useless Inventions and Best of Jill Hives. Magnificent songs, both. As for Waved Out, it contains many classics as well. Another Bob solo must have: Speak Kindly of Your Volunteer Fire Dept. It's probably not available in Ireland, as it's not on Matador, it's on his own Fading Captain Series dealy. But if you can aquire it somehow, I highly recomend it.

It's true, Dean did in fact invent the whole concept of "whimsicality", thus the "whimsical" rainbow stars and the affinity for thin mustaches and daisy dukes.

I love Mag Earwhig. I doesn't get near enough respect. Too many lovely songs on there for it not to be revered in the same league as Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes.

Pixies/Matrix? I apparently have a bit of a Memento thing going on. Except it's only parts of my memory that are totally gone. I Am A Tree was written by Doug Gillard, and it's a beauty. Anyone who laments the "new" GbV and misses Tobin Sprout should shut up and listen to what an amazing musician/songwriter Doug Gillard is. Nothing against Toby, he's great too.

Alright, I'll rent SlingBlade this eve. I'd watch Fiddler with the whole fam, it's a wholesome little musical. That is, assuming your kids are old enough to watch something that long. Maybe not them, on second thought...

There are all kinds of Deans, but there is no such thing as 'the gay Dean'. The Annoying Dean, Crazy Dean, Cute Dean (some argue he doesn't exist either), Funny Dean, Happy Dean (is this who you mean?), ... , and Whimsical Dean.

Nope, no gay on there anywhere. :)
