What's the deal with the controversy surrounding file-sharing recently? Is it illegal, or not? I'd really like to download some songs from Frank Black's new album soon, the only reason I haven't is because I can't find any on KaZaa. I've read that people are going to get sued if they're caught with downloaded songs, and I'm not talking about these people that have thousands, I mean from what I hear the recording industry is going after everybody they can get their hands on. A percentage of people have actually stopped using file-sharing programs. I think the whole thing's ridiculous. I think with the advent of digital music, and the advances in information transfer within the recent past, it is only a matter of time before the recording companies are going to have to rethink how they market their products. I guess with the new inventions like i-tunes and such they are reforming their methods, but as long as people can find a way around having to pay, they will. There was some shareware I downloaded (not from KaZaa) that the guy that created it said he did not believe in charging people because this program he had created, and all others, were simply varying arrangements of 1's and 0's. I realize this is perhaps looking at it from a black-and-white perspective, but in a sense it's true. Once computers are as commonplace in homes as TV's, I doubt the recording companies will have the sale of CD's and other pre-made audio devices to sell anymore at all.

Yeah... the sheer cost of them going after every single person with music to share would put them under WELL before they could possibly win the suit and so on. Scare tactics, my friends. My only recommendation would be to not have lots of top 40 crap (we probably all have a little for our 'friends' without musical taste that need CD's burnt). They seem to target specific songs in their searches. So they further make the Internet a tool of good music and against themselves. You've got to love the man who sharpens the knife he's stabbed with. Oh, the irony.

That said, it is still illegal to transfer your copies to others. But they took out Napster and what happened. The millions of know-nothings who used Napster exclusively were suddenly fractured into smaller groups (of ever increasing number) using more and more programs which are more and more decentralized. So instead of dealing with things properly when they had everyone coming to one company, they've fractured it and now have to engage in guerilla warfare. And they think that some blanket statement will be the end? Dream on. Your days of supremacy are nearing the end.

And that is my anti-RIAA rant. Ahhh.

P2P will never die. No matter how many lawsuits they produce, it will continue to thrive. The programmers out there will find ways around every barrier they try to put up. Encrypting who a user is and making him untraceable and anonymous is all that needs to be done...then how can they track who is doing what? And COF is right...they're looking for people with top 40 shit on their drives. These are all scare tactics they're using on downloaders, because they themselves are scared. They're obviously losing the fight...they're going to have no choice but to rethink their marketing strategies. Maybe if they start charging a realistic price for CDs, people will go out and buy them. Over $15 for a CD is a fucking rip.
