The GBV song from "Colonel Geoffery" is bloody brilliant. I haven't listened to that record in a long, long time. Thanks Jessie, I do beleive I'll pull it out again. If I have to be a pirate, I think I'd be Captain Jack Sparrow. I thought that was a tasty movie, Jessie, I didn't find it long at all. |

Yoshimi's awesome, but not because it's a concept album. I guess it's just difficult for me to take concepts seriously, mostly cuz their significance/relevance in the context of music is minimal or at least, to me, seems diminished. Of course, if the concept gained too much momentum I suppose the resulting album would risk being comparable in its cheesiness to... a musical or something. |

I haven't gotten a copy of it yet either. Its kinda like waiting for your birthday or Christmas and knowing that something really cool is waiting for you. I know exactly what I am doing after work on the day it comes out.

Okay. I'm almost afraid to post this. But, here goes. Has anyone out there heard of Insane Clown Posse? They are one of the stupidest, most inane bands you will ever hear. But, someone at work without a broadband connection asked me to download their newest album called "The Wizard of the Hood." It turned out to be pretty damn funny. Violent J from the band gets transported to the land of Oz, and it is in it's own retarted way a concept album in that it is one long story, a sort of parody of the Wizard of Oz. I won't attempt to describe it here, because a written description would only make it worse. I fully admit it is a stupid ass band, and I guess this post could concievably be a new topic called "guilty pleasures."

Concept albums are my favorite type of album. I often find myself trying to connect songs together and make concept albums out of albums that are probably not intended to be concept ones.
Favorite tight concept albums: Tom Waits - Frank’s Wild Years Grandaddy - Sophtware Slump Willie Nelson- Phases and Stages Willie Nelson - Red-Headed Stranger Pink Floyd - The Wall & Dark Side of the Moon
Favorite Looseconcept albums: Mercury Rev- All is Dream Sparklehorse - Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot Freedy Johnston - Blue Days, Black Nights
I think the one element neccessary for a concept album is a narrative (however loose). It has nothing to do with sonics. |

Read up about Yoshimi on the Lips's website. I think the whole thing is, at least loosely, a concept album. It just depends on what that thread conecting everything is. Life? Love? Loss? Acid? |

I did not know that Jessie. I think the concept is "how high can I sing without haveing my voice completely crack and or go off key". He's always teetering on the edge. I mean, listen to "Can't Get You Out of My Head". He makes that song sound so desperate and depraved. Much more intersting, if less commercial, the Kylie's lip smacking dance floor bumper. |

yeah, he sounds at the end of his tether on that. thought he can't sing in the classical sense, his voice can carry so much emotion and truthfulness you can't help but fall into what he's saying.

Oh Jess, you're always messing around! Shame on you! ;)
I think I read on the Lips message board that the pink robots might be a metaphor for corporate "automatons" or apathetic people in general, and that the fighting taking place is actually a struggle to change or transcend a mundane and potentially detrimental (on the global scale) way of life. If so, then one would have to wonder who the hell Yoshimi is (other than one of The Boredoms). Wayne sounds funny on The Soft Bulletin cuz he's constantly overworking his voice in that high-register style. It's good, though. |
