Hey, I'm making a bunch of mixes for my cross country trip. I'm all set in most departments, but I'm in desperate need of quality oldies for my Oldies Mix. This is very important. I'm thinking along the lines of Louie Louie, some Monkees and old Beatles. just stuff like that that everyone loves.
Any suggestions? |

I said it lots already but Sunshine Superman by Donovan is classic. So many Beatles tunes... The forum consensus seems to be Two of Us. |

I don't know Cole Porter except he was the answer I was havin trouble with in my morning crossword puzzle. Him and Gina Lollabrigida which I honestly thought was just a character from the Flintstones.
You could get hurdy gurdy (sp?)by Donovan too. Satellite of Love by Lou Reed is fabulous and then along the same Bowie lines you could get All the Young Dudes by Mott the Hoople.
Am I crazy to ridiculously love Telephone Line by ELO?
I'll belt that one out in the car. But then again I still get excited to hear Iron Maiden on the radio. People in other cars thought I was a freak when Aces High came on the other day. |

As a fan of 60's early 70s psychedelic garage rock, I must reccommend the classic Nuggets collection, originally put together by Lenny Kaye, and recently expanded to a 4-CD set by (who else but) Rhino records. Loaded with great, one hit wonders like Too Much to Dream, She's About a Mover, Baby Please Don't Go, Dirty Water, oh, it goes on and on. Better still, blow off making a mix tape with any of this -- just bring it. It aint a cheap box set, but its worth every penny. And this from somebody who had the original vinyl version of Kaye's compiliation.

No you aren't crazy. you just have excellent taste, Carolynanna.
As for some more oldies, try these
Anything By Roy Orbison Chuck Berry Jerry Lee Lewis Johnny Cash Carl Perkins Eddie Cochran Gene Vincent Buddy Holly Jackie Wilson Early Motown Psychedelic R&B (i.e. Temptations Cloud Nine) Stax/Booker T and the MGS Monkees The Who The Rolling Stones The Beatles The Kinks The Hollies The Turtles The Velvet Undrground The Lovin Spoonful The Mamas and the papas Otis Redding Howlin Wolf The Doors Janis Joplin Jimi Hendrix The Kingsmen The Undisputed Truth The Chambers Brothers Sly and the Family Stone The Sonics The Monks Nuggets Box Set Doo Wop Box Set The Beach Boys Pet Sounds/Smile era Billie Holiday Art Blakey Dave Brubeck
Any stuff from any of the above and you'll be fine.

I know they're not really oldies, but I just made a mix tape the I consider to contain (mostly) tracks recorded between 1970-1980.
Maybe this could help? I dunno. (Doubt it.)
Needle In The Camels Eye - Brian Eno Bang Bang - Squeeze UK Virginia Plain - Roxy Music Cosmic Dancer - T-Rex Diamond Meadows - T-Rex Lightening Strikes (Not Once But Twice) - the Clash Up In Heaven (Not Only Here) - the Clash One More Time - Joe Jackson Look Sharp! - Joe Jackson Looking For A Kiss - New York Dolls Gimmie Some Skin - Stooges Make Me Smile (Come Up and See Me) - Steve Harley and Cockney Rebel Is This What You Wanted - Leonard Cohen March of the Mad Scientist - Jethro Tull I Wanna Destroy You - Soft Boys Underwater Moonlight - Soft Boys In The Street - Big Star Dice Man - the Fall Vicious - Lou Reed Make Up - Lou Reed Satellite Of Love - Lou Reed (Yeah, I love Transformer) Five Knuckle Shuffle - Throbbing Gristle Mind - Talking Heads Solsbury Hill - Peter Gabriel Yu-Gung - Einsturzende Neubauten Mutiny In Heaven - the Birthday Party
Ah well. I normally just skim over lists like these when people post them.

Or, for a song that even my Mom thinks is old, you could go with "Israelites" by Desmond Dekker |

Ha, thanks guys. All submissions very much noted. I should note, in terms of the late 60s-80's era of Velvets, Bowie, Iggy Pop, The Clash and all those classics, I'm pretty set (though I'll take into consideration all that were mentioned). What I'm in desperate need of is old classics that I wouldn't have in my CD collection and have to download...old singles and stuff like that.
P.S. I cracked up that you picked "Dice Man" as a Fall track Obfuscate, for the record for Fall I went with Frightened and Big New Prinze...I have to keep it pretty accessible, because one person on the trip is only into really catchy songs.
Thanks Swimmer for reminded me of Roy, who I almost forgot about.
Very good choices so far. |

For the mamas and the papas, i like this is dedicated to the one I love.
oh and Ramona and I were just mentioning how much we love Sunday Girl by Blondie.
Oh and I bugged speedy enough about giving Uncle Albert by the Beatles a go. More Beatles could be Happiness is a Warm Gun, Baby you're a Rich Man, Across the Universe and so so many more. |

Actually I'm not really that cool. I got the office cuz the other person quit and I was just next in line. And its not too much of an office as we work in a big old renovated house and I have a small room on the second floor.
Anyways, you always got to have Ballroom Blitz for an oldie. |

Me: I actually co-wrote Ballroom Blitz....
Person 2: Really?
Me: Well, in my spare time...
Person 2: REALLY?
Me: No, but I do like taking credit for ridiculous things. Like co-writing songs written before I was born (I assume BB was written in the 70's...), "inventing" different animals (did I mention that I invented the giraffe), and coining popular cliches ala George Costanza ("I once told a girl I had coined the phrase, 'Pardon my French'."
Seriously, try it, it's way more fun than it sounds. Just out of nowhere take credit for inventing/creating something that there is no possible way you could've invented.
I was the one who turned cats and dogs against each other.
-> paraphrased quote from who?
Oh yeah, I dig Ballroom Blitz, that was what I had set out to say initially. |

If your dping oldies get yourself some Buddy Holly. Other than the BIG hits I would recommend "Rave On" as a personal fave. |

I thought Rave On was a big hit. My dad pretty much ruined Buddy Holly for me I guess. What's the name of that one that says, Love like this will surely come my way, ahey aheyhey.... And if that is the name then feel free to poke fun at me. |

I believe it's called "Everyday"
And Sister Christian was a Night Ranger song from the 80's, not the 70's.
