Cult of Ray (who's Ray, by the way?) has been in my bathroom CDplayer for the last 7 days. It's a great way to wake up and shower to because it's fast and zesty.

OK, I know Cult of Ray is Ray Bradbury, but in Space Is Gonna Do Me Good, I always assumed he was talking about surrealist photographer Man Ray. Opinions?

EDIT: Ok, checked the lyrics. 'Tis "man Ray." Live and learn. Could still be a little pun, though. Like "plein air" in Abstract Plain. Blahblahblah.

Oh. Well, I'm sure you're right, being the QuizMistress and all. I've never heard of Man Ray, but perhaps it's a quote or parapharse from him "better to do it with a toy or a game, OH YEAH!". I don't know what that has to do with tanning, but that's why I love FB. All these years later, and we're still trying to put the puzzle together.

Nah, you're right. See edit above. Makes more sense that it's Ray Bradbury. I always thought, "WTF? Why would Man Ray say that?"

My above comment got me thinking (I'm such and inspiration!). You know how in recent interviews Frank has said that he doesn't really think too much about the "album", per se, it's more just a set of songs he recorded? Like, here's a session, we recording some songs, they go together beacause of that. Perhaps he feels this way because his earlier attempts at making a thematically cohesive record went unoticed by most. What I'm postulating is:

could Teenager of the Year (or Orange, or COR, but mostly TOTY) be a concept album? Is there some common thread or theme running throught TOTY that know has really commented on (that I've seen)? The title isn't taken from a song on the record, the album art reflects the title, so it's possible all the songs on the record fit into some sort of grand theme or scheme... discuss.... is this new thread worthy? I haven't got the cajones for that big a step just yet.

I apologize in advance, since this might belong in the song meanings topic, but mereubu's posit re: Ray Bradbury vs. Man Ray was too compelling to pass up. Also, I think that it gives the album much more meaning to me now that there is this possible link - it points to old Pixies "Trompe Le Monde" material, and to a possible continual theme, as Speedy M was discussing.

I believe that it is indeed a play on BOTH Rays. Man Ray (originally Emmanuel Radnitsky, born in Philadelphia in 1890), moved to Paris and studied with the major dadaists and surrealists of Europe (Duchamp, et al - also a more than likely inspiration for FB - i.e. his work "L.H.O.O.Q."). He was then "expatriated" back to the US during WWII, and ended up in none other than Hollywood (also the stomping ground and source of inspiration of one Ray Bradbury). The link below is a photo of Man Ray playing *chess!* in 1946 there:
http://www.guardian.co.uk/arts/gallery/image/0,8543,-11304693343,00.html

His style was similar to Duchamp's, and also Luis Buñuel (Un Chien Andalou!), below is a link for film enlargements:

http://www.tcf.ua.edu/Classes/Jbutler/T340/SurrealismUnChienAndalou1.htm

Man Ray ended up having to do fashion photography of all things while in Hollywood - maybe tanning comes into play there, or we may be back to Bradbury territory (like radiation or the color of Mars? dunno. But he did a LOT of symbolic work with imagery of toys and games.
In regard to Speedy M.'s question - I think a topic on album theme and song choice would be very interesting, though I don't know if it could be without discussion of song meaning, obviously. I have had difficulty with some of his choices for an album, sound-wise. But maybe he has had a larger, maybe symbolic, purpose in mind.

Also, both Rays were revolutionary in their fields.

I'd love to go into greater detail on this Bradbury/Man Ray thing, because I get a feeling there is a lot there - he has set up the most intriguing clues!

Well madame, perhaps you should move on over to the newly created "Concept Albums" thread, and there we can discuss all things Ray, Jay, and Johnson. I'd like hear more about this "difficulty with some his choices for an album, sound-wise" business. Teenager is almost perfect, so I wanna hear what you got, sista.

I like the album. I get the feeling FB isn't too fond of it at this point; based on the sound of his recent albums he probably finds the themes immature or something to that effect.

That said, I hope before all is said and done he decides to put out another punkesque album. I wonder if he still has some punkesqueness in him? It wouldn't have to count as his yearly release, he could release it in Oddballs fashion.

I'm shocked that so many of you find the Marsist appealing. It seems like the least likely candidate for someone's favorite song on the album; unless you have Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star in your CD collection, then I understand completely.

I find 'The Marsist' greatly appealing. Very much so. In a whacky sort of way, sure...but appealing nonetheless.

And Experimental Jet Set is indeed in my CD collection. So there you have it.

Yeah, the Marsist is a cracking song, maybe not the best on the album but still very good. Best on COR would have to be either Last Stand / COR / Kicked in the Taco / Creature Crawling / Dance War.... all these are classics.

War....... Its not fantastic

For me COR was abit of a dissapointment when it came out cause I was so looking forward to the follow up of Teenager. But that soon disappeared and I really love it . People say it's his weakest album but compared to Pistolero, I think it's a really great album, and since DITS he's been back in great form. My only problem with it is Jesus was Right, it's my pet hate, and I've bitched about it before so I'm not going to here.

I love "Jesus Was Right". I think it might be the closest thing to rockabilly Frank's written. Unless I'm forgetting something else. And I like the character described in the lyrics. Sitting at work all day with headphones on, listening to music, and tuning out my dopey co-workers... I relate to that guy.

And "The Marsist" isn't THAT weird. Please! I don't know if I'd call it a great song, but it is a great opener for an album or a show. It's a tension-builder. It gets you pumped up what follows.

I still remember how well it came off when I saw the band in early '96 and hadn't yet heard the album. Frank came out smiling and the band went into the "The Marsist". The kids immediately started slamming around and then awkwardly stopped when the song went quiet and the spoken part began ("If you wanted to get somewhere..."). It was funny.

I like The Cult of Ray. I don't know if I can be objective about it cuz I have so much nostalgia wrapped in it. From about age 17 on up there's an album I associate with each summer, and CULT was my Summer of '96 album, the summer before I started college. I made a tape of The Cult of Ray for listening in the car (with the Men in Black b-sides tacked on the end). On the tape's b-side was Helium's Dirt of Luck album, I remember. I listened to that tape throughout the summer, and then played it on the long drive as I moved away from home, and then played it as I drove around exploring the new town I was living in. Instant memories. It'll always be a special album for me.

Music's neat!

Pistolero is a cracking album.... I don;t think that Frank has released a shit album to date... the weakest imo is Oddballs, and that still has some great tunes.

I wont say anything else about JWR Jason since you like it so much . COR was my fav record when I was in fifth year in school and Frank was doing promotions on MTV doing a phone in and kept saying that he just wanted to rock! (sigh!, those were the days, ahemmm not the rock thing, having Frank on MTV)! Stuart, The Marsist is a great opener, all wonky and skeewed guitars, great stuff. I have to say Pistolero gave me a Frank crisis, even to this day when I listen to it, none of the songs, except Billy Radcliff, stick in my head. Sad I know, but dont hate me.

Have you watched that crap channel lately (I mean the last ten years)? I wouldn't be a FB fan if his music came down to that level. The only thing that rocks on MTV is jackass.

I remember when I first bought pistolero; for about the first week or 2, all I listened to was I switched You over and over. I loved and still do lov dat song. So Hard to Make Things Out is another song from Pistolero that I listened to a lot; it's 3 songs wrapped into one nice tune. And skeleton man is another favorite; when he says "Doctor Digger" that just sounds really cool on my ears. Pistolero and Cult of Ray could've been one album.

In my humble opinion Frank should be more critical about his mediocre songs. If he would put his best songs of every 2 albums together, he would have smashing records. Unlike with the Pixie albums (I know I know) I tend to skip some songs on the FB(ATC) cd's. But again, maybe it all comes down to taste. BLD and DW combined could have been a mindblower.

heh (sigh), cause I could'nt get past the sound and his more straight forward lyrics (I know now their not) they didnt stick and it pissed me off that I could'nt even remember what Wertern Star went like! (I hate feeling like that about Franks work) but I just remembered that I'm always singing "yo soy un pistolero" so it must be getting in subversively. I much prefer the next song Little Heart. I love his country slant, it feels more distilled, I find the sound on Pistolero too much like generic rock gutair?
