Going along with the "Favorites" kick we all seem to be on, what is your favorite use of obscure language. To me, the whole libretto/stretto thing from Bad Harmony is exquisitely done.

Not sure if it's really obscure, but probably the bhavnas (maitri, pramoda, karuna, madhyastha) referenced in Jaina Blues.

"my head is tired from his enthymeme." - i want rock and roll "rolling on the moquette inside a cul-de-sac kampong." - western star "though i am no duke of earl, you are my chatelaine." - i love your brain "in the division pelagic, you were coragic." - the swimmer
those are a few of my favorites - obscure to a fault.

Geez, there are so many. I'm limiting myself to three for now.
"I'm sorry bout the visigoths" - back to rome
Pretty much all of Steak n Sabre. You gotta love the rhyming of "Trobrianders" w/"understand" and "Plato" w/"sweet potatoes."
The juxtaposition of "bolero" & "Pistolero" is so very perfect. |

The swimmer lyric is rad. Lately, I like:
"I am a dog I am a sculpture You hate my features And you name me for a god"

Obscure References:
Western Star; 'all he thinks about is how he, looks like heroes period bowie"
I Heard Ramona Sing; 'i hope that someone retires, they pull another menudo"
Obscure Words;
Ole Mulholland; 'when i was hanging out, just in my dhoti'
I am pretty happy that in his recent albums, i have not needed to refer to a dictionary all the time.

i was going to mention the menudo thing, because the first time i heard it i shook my head in amazement that he name-checked MENUDO in a song about the RAMONES. i thought that was incredible.
i dont know how obscure it is, but my favorite frank line is from "i dont want to hurt you": "i wish you could be whats-her-name, and i could be king kong."
thats a damn cool line. |

"I play some pachinko, play pachisi" - Calistan - my mate Gordie who is into 500bpm Rotterdam Fuckstep likes FB solely for that lyric.
"Out across the salts, and out of these faults, and on a tobagos" - Ole Mulholland
"Hangin in plein air" - Abstract Plain
"You must see my domicile; I had it built in decca (deco?) style, the other day at the parkwatch (?) come visiting was a sasquatch" - Superabound
Yeah I love the strange words he uses too, always adds a twist to the song.

that's potlatch, leo - as long as we're talking obscure language here.
from dictionary.com: "A ceremonial feast among certain Native American peoples of the northwest Pacific coast, as in celebration of a marriage or accession, at which the host distributes gifts according to each guest's rank or status. Between rival groups the potlatch could involve extravagant or competitive giving and destruction by the host of valued items as a display of superior wealth."

uh... "on into Vegas", perhaps? Yes. Vegas.
Oh, and "potlatch". I guess the sasquatch was hungry. |

"And I don't eat no Chateau Briand"
I would eat this... but all I need is PBJ.
And just about any lyric in the song Blast Off is pretty friggin' obscure.
Do you remember the site
levitated/fb.net ??????????
Big Galoof, do you remember?
He had that cool frank black dictionary thing with definitions to many of the obscure words in FB's songs. I think that site is gone. I wonder whatever happened to... that guy, I can't remember his name.

and speedy m, sorry - i'm quick on the draw, especially when it comes to make obnoxious corrections and/or clarifications.

Yeah Jared Tarbell is one of the best Flash gurus/digital maths artists out there. He exhibits at galleries in Texas and around the US (around the world as far as I know). He also contributed to Friends of Ed books such as Flash Math Creativity. And he signed the guestbook on my website!!! which is cool for a fairly shite (ex)web developer like me, it's kind of like Frank Black signing the guitar of someone who can only play 3 chords, if you catch my drift. If you look at Jared's work in my opinion it echoes a lot of Pixies themes such as the whole Victorian pioneering engineering spirit and the powerful magic of maths and science ("D=RXT", "Alec Eiffel", Build High" etc).
Yeah so anyway it would be cool to have the black book back.

Thanks for the correction - I just make up words for songs when I listen to them. I made up words for the whole of that Super Furry Animals album - "Myngwyw" or whatever - before discovering it was actually recorded in Welsh.
And I used to think that David Bowie song said, "The smell of fat chicks just put the smile off my face", when in fact it says, "This mellofied chick just put my spine out of place". Though I think my lyrics were better. Bowie, if you're listening, I may be willing to help out on your next album.
