Is that the book about the horrors of the fast food and meat packing industries? Much like "The Jungle" only in recent, non-story form. If I am correct on what book you refer to, I have read it and cannot believe that I continue to eat fast food (so quick, so tasty, so much money to be made). The things that still go on in these places are disgusting. People being killed in the machines, large amounts of confined animals being fed the leftovers of their own kind. The fact that countless animals are slaughter everyday in the most merciless manners so that we, the superior ones, can enjoy our over abundance of cholestorol(sp?) proves that it's all coming back to us in the form of clogged arteries. Hooray for money, though.
(geez, I hope I'm talking about the right book)

i read it.. it's pretty dreary, but worth reading ..
i don't know if it will stop you from ever eating it again, but it should, if you read it. |

You mean the "food" isn't enough to put you off?

I'm in the middle of it myself, not shocked, it's just confirming many of my suspicions and just making me more paranoid about the subversity of it all. Well researched and written, writer is up front about his slant. Haven't eaten any FF since I started reading it. I like that the author comes at this from all angels.
I'm also reading "Fat Land" -- how Americans got to be the fattest people in the world. (It was a two-fer selction with FFN in the QPB book club.....) Also worth reading - discusses the Reagan administration's role, especially that foul Sec of the Interior (the one that alwasy made racist jokes) whose name escapes me right now, and how the influenced our snacking and eating habits... very interesting.

I have always wondered how many fat industrialized people might become vegetarians if they had to catch, kill and cook their own meat. As well as how many would die of starvation if the world was rid of fast food joints or even restaurants and left these poor defenceless people to actually cook for themselves every time they needed to eat?
I am now very proficient at cooking a meal for one to four people without breaking stride. It actually tastes good (well to me) and to the few who have passes along comments. It is a skill that each individual has and should utilize. Cook for yourself.
I may even begin to grow my own food. Baby-steps for now. I don't want to become too self-sufficient.
Strummer-man I had me a vision!

PEas are a pain because you have to shuck them and one row of 'em gets you about 1 serving. However, if you grow flat peas for stir fries and such, they're pretty productive.
OK< based on my limited experience on my postage stamp lot, here's my successes and failures:
Tomatoes! Easy to grow, plentiful, etc. Grows everywhere. Thousands of varieties. I have fond memories of being a kid, going out the the garden with the salt shaker, and pulling them off the vine and eating them like they were apples, still warm from the sun.
Lettuce and Spinach. Easy to grow and prolific, but when it comes up, you have to eat it fast, because it bolts and gets bitter, especially in the hot weather. Plant early for early summer harverst, then plant again in July for September harvest -- when it's not so hot, the yummy season is extended.
Corn is a bitch for a small plot. Avoid.
Eggplant, peppers, broccoli -- easy and there's nothing like fresh broccoli. It's won my kid over to broccoli. Snap it off and it's atually JUICY!
HErbs -- easy easy easy! If you plant in containers bring 'em in for the winter and have fresh basil, oregano, chives, rosemary, thyme for all your cooking. You won't go back to dried, ever. You can put them in a garden, but don't plant mint or oregano if you don't LOVE them. They are weeds. They will take over. I know this. (Fortunately I love mint and oregano).
GReen Beans -- easy. The classic "teach a kid to garden" plant because they are so fool proof. Only issue -- pick 'em early. Otherwise, the beans inside will get too big and hard, you won't be able to cook them enough, and you will eat them and have painful gas pains for days.

Tomatoes aren't so easy here, such a short growing season and all. but they are good to hide "oregano" plants between them. |

Broccoli, good for small spaces?? Cool..
I'm gonna plant kale where the peas were, get 'em up for the winter..they grow fine here in the winter. =) |

I checked this book out from the library, started reading it, and LOST it!! I can't believe it. I've never done something like that before.
Anyway, I'm not shocked by anything in there either. I've been trying to ween myself off fast food for a while and I thought maybe that would give me that last little push I needed. Now if only I hadn't lost the book! I'd like to read the rest of it.
And there ain't no day... And there ain't no night... |

It's only plus/minus $10 in paperback. The author deserves the royalties. Buy it.
