so how many people have seriously been listening to the man since the 80's or how many have just now found out about him? it's not bad to just have found out...just curious as to when/where you discovered the man (frank black) in your life?
it was 1989 for me....man oh man so long ago. and i still am hooked. ryan

I think this has already been discussed here, quite a long time ago though. For me, I think it was 1995 when I heard the radio session that eventually gave the Black Sessions record.

I have no problem with that actually... But I know that some people will soon reply to your post by a sarcastic comment and a link to the previous similar thread... People are just mean, you know.

I really got into FB just last year, I'd heard his stuff plenty years before. Some of the stuff I like now I didn't years ago, some I did, but wasn't much of a CD buyer until recently, when I found the catholics through another band it impressed me and now I'm hooked. ;-)

For me, it was the Cult of Ray era. I saw him in concert in November 1996, I think. Although before that my friends were already into him and I remember really liking this "I Heard Ramona Sing" song. |

it was also 1989 for me. Anyone in new england around that time will appreciate that I heard the Pixies on WBRU (Brown U.). I am not sure what it was I heard; but I certainly had to learn more. Still do...

It was '93. I started listening to the Pixies via my friend Tim freshman year of high school. Fell in love instatntly. My first listen to TOTY the following year will always be a seminal moment in my life.

i was a small child in the 1980's so my frank black listening only began about 3 years ago, although i've been listening to the pixies since 1994. |

I got into the pixies about a year ago and was devestated to learn that they had split so many years ago, but was thrilled to learn that Dog in the Sand had just come out and that FB was still making music. As of now I have every album (but Cult of Ray) that Frank Black has done and cannot wait for the new one (only 1 more month!).

It was either 1989 or 1990 for me (wow, so long ago). I heard "Where Is My Mind" on college radio (KUCI - UC Irvine) and was hooked from that moment on. |

Since Bossanova, thanks to my older brother. When first learning the bass guitar, I was instantly attracted to Kim's bass lines.

1997. I was a huge X-phile (how emberassing:-) and I had to buy the 'Songs in the Key of X' CD. I heard Frank Black, but I must admit I liked the Meat Puppets, the Foo Fighters, and Nick Cave's songs bettter. Then I bought 'Cult of Ray' and I didn't like it. THEN I gave it to a friend of mine and he liked it alot. So I listened to it again, and it just blue me away "I'm watching my BACK, I'm waiting my visitation, from the men in BLA-A-A-CK"; "I don' wanna hurt you", "Turning Sand into metal... |

I have to give thanks to my big bro too. He started me listening to Trompe le Monde. But I was super hooked when I heard him playing Where is my Mind? I wonder how many fans that song reeled in? |

I was a massive Pixies fan but only got a year out of them before they split up, so I was delighted that Frank was still making music when he released his debut ablum and I hav'nt looked back since.

I just discovered him spring break 2002 when I got Doolittle and I've loved everything he's done ever since then. I too was a huge Nirvana fan, but now I actually hate Nirvana. |

this is really lame, but i'd never heard of the pixies until i saw "fight club" (which was a really bad movie by the way, but i was dragged to the theater by a friend). after i saw it, the next day i went out to a record store and got "surfer rosa" and since then ive been stockpiling everything of frank's i can get my greedy hands on. |

1998 - I was a freshman in High School, methinks. I bought FB & TC's, Surfer Rosa and Trompe Le Monde all in one fell swoop. Also: Fight Club a bad movie? No way, dude.

1988: The video for 'Here Comes Your Man' was a welcome burst of fresh air amidst the crap that was played ad-nauseum on tv and radio. Keep in mind that 'Pour Some Sugar On Me' by Def Leppard was in hot competition with Poison's 'Every Rose Has Its Thorn' for which video would exceed the mark of being played 20 times daily. So anyways, the Pixies' video came on in the middle of the day, out of nowhere, annouced as a band from Boston (so I raised my eyebrows in interest since I am originally from New England)...and i was taken right away by them and ever since. |

1988, listening to a radio program called Brave New Waves while recording over the Glass Tiger tape I had gotten for xmas. The song: 'I've been tired'.

Back in 95 0r 96 I picked up Surfer Rosa through a recommendation. I thought Bone Machine was alright but then the rest of the album blew me away. I couldn't believe how good this was. Song after song that were amazing. Slowly made my way through all the Pixies studio albums.
During this time, FB & the C's were opening for Pearl Jam, so I thought it wise to check out the solo stuff. The self-titled Catholics hadn't been released though, so I made a mix tape from Frank Black, Teenager and Cult.
While I enjoyed a lot of the music I didn't become a huge fan until I saw them in 2001. After that show, I gave tracks that I had dismissed more of a listen and that was it...the man's a songwriting genius. |
