Frank Zappa's Link to Frank Black;
1. Frank Zappa was a very close friend and worked with Captain Beefheart. (Hot Rats, Trout Mask Replica, Bongo Fury). 2. Captain Beefheart had Eric Drew Feldman playing in his Magic Band for his last three albums. (Doc At The Radar Station, Shiny Beast/ Bat Chain Puller, Ice Cream For Crow). 3. Eric Drew Feldman has been working with Frank Black since Trompe Le Monde.

I'll give it a try; 1. Cilla Black's first recordings were produced by the legendary George Martin. 2. The legendary George Martin went on to create his own recording studio in Montesserat, where the Rolling Stones recorded often. 3. Mick Jagger performed an embarressing duet with David Bowie in the early eighties (Dancing in The Streets). 4. On his 50th celebration concert, David Bowie performed a duet with our man Frank Black.

I got it: Whispering Weeds sounds like a Talking Heads song.
Seriously now: Frank wrote Cactus which was covered by David Bowie. Bowie worked with Brian Eno on the Berlin trilogy. Eno produced Talking Heads records (Fear Of Music and Remain In Light).
Yeah! I finally got one.
Now link Frank Black to Celine Dion (I hope there are more than 6 degrees between the two...)

Unfortunately, the posts here make that all too easy to do.
1. Celine Dion performed an embarassingly horrifically bad version of Tina Turner's magnificent Phil Spector produced hit "River Deep Mountain High" and also performed with Turner on that annoying Divas series on VH1. Dion tried desperately to move in high heels a la Tina, but failed miserably.
2. Mick Jagger admits that Tina Turner (who, with Ike, supported the Stones on an late 60's, early 70's tour) taught him everything he knows about how to move on stage.
3. See post above re: Mick and David Bowie. It should be noted that had Tina Turner actually done the dance moves in that embarrasing "Dancing in the Streets" video, it might have saved it.
4. See post above re: Bowie and Frank. (also, we all know Bowie has covered Frank.). No embarassing dancing involved.
Sorry, Celine Dion only has a Frank Black number of 4. Please, sombody link Frank Black to Bryan Ferry, FAST!!!!!

Kinda round-a-bout, but it's this or work.

wow....very hard!!! i had to research one of these links...HERE ARE 6 Degrees!
1. Roky Erickson's song, 'I Have Always Been Here Before' was covered by the genius, Julian Cope. 2. The Ms. Kate St. John played oboe on Julian Cope's album, 'World Shut your Mouth'. 3. Kate St John collaborated with Roger Eno. 4. Roger Eno's brother is, of course, Brian Eno. 5. Brian Eno produced David Bowie. 6. David Bowie performed a duet with Frank Black.

that's too easy given the Bowie connection. Bowie wrote "All the Young Dudes" with Ian Hunter and produced them and got them going. (If you need another link, Mick Ronson, who was one of the Spiders From Mars, was Hoople's guitarist). Either way, you're linked to bowie by either a factor of 1 or 2, which gives Frank a Mott the Hoople number of either 2 or 3. This also goes for any of that whole glam crowd Bowie played/danced/slept with: Lou Reed, Mick Jagger, Pete Townsend, the Rolling Stones, Adrian Belew (which gets Frank to King Crimson and the whole art rock crowd in two steps or less ), Stevie Ray Vaughn (which gets you into Tex-American Blues easily).
I could play it cheap and link myself (and my husband) very quickly to Frank via the Gordon Gano connection, (both us us have played/currently play with members of Plasticland, who in turn have played with Brian Ritchie, to the Femmes, to Gano) but for kicks, I'll take the scenic Blues route to get there:
1) I play in a band with former plasticland guitarist Dan Mullen 2) Plasticland served as Bo Diddly's backup band for his Milwaukee stop during Diddly's '90 USA tour. 3) Bo Diddly often jammed with Mose Allison 4) Frank wrote a song about Allison and met him.
I issue a challenge: link an American musican to Frank Black without going through Great Britian!

Here is Frank Black to Frank Black of 'Milleneum':
1. Lance Henrikson who plays 'Frank Black', had a role in Jim Jarmusch's 'Dead Man' starring Johnny Depp. 2. Johnny Depp played with Flea in his 'band' P. 3. Flea played with Mike Watt in the album, 'Ballhog or Tugboat' 4. Our Frank Black did the same.
Here is another one, someone link Frank Black with Simon & Garfunkel. |

A possible cheating way would be:
1.Simon and Garfunkle recorded Bridge Over Troubled Water 2.Clay Aikson covered it 3.Frank reviewed Clay's version in the new Rolling Stone.
I'll try another:
1. Paul Simon was covered on Karen Karpenter's solo album (Still Crazy After All These Years) 2. Sonic Youth covered Superstar by the Carpenter's on a tribute album 3. Sonic Youth appearred on the Pump Up the Volume Soundtrack with the Pixies.

How about: 1. Prince had Kevin Smith film an unreleased documentary for him (as discussed on his spoken word DVD An Evening With Kevin Smith). 2. Kevin Smith has featured Jason Lee in many of his films. 3. Jason Lee worked on Minority Report with Tom Cruise. 4. Tom Cruise co-starred with Brad Pitt in An Interview With A Vampire. 5. Brad Pitt starred in Fight Club which featured The Pixies Where Is My Mind? in the excellent closing sequence of the film.

I got it in many many degrees:
- Gregory Hines played in Coppola's Cotton Club; - Coppola also directed Dracula starring Wynona Rider; - Wynona Rider played the role of Jon Spencer in one of the Blues Explosion videos; - Jon Spencer covered All Shook Up on Brace Yourself; - Frank also appears on this tribute album covering Breathless and Handyman.

Frank Black to Chuck D
1. Frank Black performed with David Bowie at his 50th Birthday concert 2. ...David Bowie also performed with Sonic Youth that day 3. Chuck D can be heard on Sonic Youth's "Kool Thing" on the Goo album (Public Enemy were recording in the studio next door).

Kool thing was freaking awesome! Good job Jim. We could call FB Chuck T. We could have also said that Weezer used a Public Enemy lyric (I'm the epitome of Public Enemy) and Weezer covered Velouria.
You're back pretty quick. |

Or: Martin Scorsese directed Mean Streets; which includes an amazing scene in a bar with the Rolling Stones' Jumping Jack Flash playing; The Rolling Stones also recorded Down In The Hole; recently covered by Chuck T.

Steven Hawking guest starred in an episode of the Simpsons; Sonic Youth has also guest starred on the Simpsons; Sonic Youth played many festivals with Nirvana; Nirvana used to play Pixies songs as their "before coming onto stage" music; Chuck T spoke the gospel in a band call the Pixies |

I was going to use the Simpsons/Sonic Youth connection. You could have applied the Sonic Youth/Bowie/Frank Black treatment as well.

It would be cool if someone could link Frank to Mary Black (famous singer in Ireland), but I think it's probably impossible!

Back in 1991 frank did a slot at Feile in Thurles, he just turned up with his guitar, he wasn't on the bill or anything, he told the crowd he was on holidays at the time.About a week later the rumour went around that there were posters up that he was doing a one-off gig in the speakeasy in limerick so people came from all over the country to see it . what they actually witnessed was francis black doing her first solo tour of Ireland, very funny to see the look on their faces when she came out on stage. |
