Okay, trying to steer things back to an actual MUSIC topic - shocking I know. Apologies if this has been posted elsewhere before...
What are your five favorite Frank songs? I am curious to see what you would all narrow it down to? Anyone?
Mine go like this - in no order (that would be like picking your favorite kids).
Calistan St. Francis Dam Disaster Valentine & Garuda Massif Central Pan American Highway
Peace out, y'all |

I know, and I'd like to apologize to the letter S for my betrayal, but the song's just too rockin' to omit. |

This is incredibly tough because all 5 could easily be off Devil's Workshop, but I'll do them from different albums.

Oh man, I'm never gonna' live that down. I was so wasted. "Frrrraaaaaank!! Duke of Eaaaarrrrrllll! Play Duuke of Eeeaaaaarll! Play it, you magnificent bastard!"
I've had naught to drink but Coca-Cola at the last two shows.
OK, I'm breaking the S monopoly in my previous response and trading The Swimmer for My Favorite Kiss. It's been playing in my head on a loop for weeks.

this changes constantly.
places named after numbers - one of his songs that, no matter how many times i hear it, still gives me goosebumps. "she was right, she was right there all the time, colapsig all the way". genius. end of miles - it´s better than st. francis damn disaster. there, i said it. great lyrics. one of the saddest frank black songs, even if it doesnt try to be. maybe that´s why. whiskey in your shoes - brilliant. i don´t know if the "first you grab it, then you lift it, then you pour it down" part is deliberately acompanied by an ascending guitar progession and then a descending one. anyway, it sounds amazing. abstract plain - i love the melody and how frank uses the simplest chord change in the chorus to create one of the best hooks he´s ever done. thalassocracy - my love for this song has something to do with the way frank sings the lyrics, how they fit the song and how it doesn´t really matter what frank is singing about. kind of like 'rock music', maybe?

I'm so glad you all actually gave this thought AND it was hard for you all! It gives me some faith that there are still people who care about the music here.
It was hard for me, and I have been thinking about it awhile. I think my list is also going to change with the tides. And the comment about choosing ten made me laugh - and I agree - I just thought five was a lot harder. Was/am very interested to see everyone's picks. Y'all rule.

In no particular order
St Francis Dam Disaster / Robert Onion So. Bay All My Ghosts / Dog Gone / I Gotta Move / Man Who Was Too Loud Announcement Whatever Hapened to Pong / Abstract Plain / Headeache Los Angeles
And I can't remember the names of a couple of songs on BLD of the top of my head. (Sorry but once I started typing I couldn't keep it to 5 songs!)

one of my favorite artists, cex, did a song about...his songs. it went something like:
"each song i spit is born with 20 brothers/in order for it to live i had to sacrafice the others/i love 'em like a mother the moment that i wrote 'em/but i regulate the heat of my babies like a scrotum"
its like that
Divine: "Kill everyone now! Condone first-degree murder! Advocate cannibalism! Eat shit! Flith is my politics, filth is my life! Take whatever you like!" |

As has been reiterated time and time again, this list is far from static. But at this moment in time, these are my 5 favorite Frank Black songs (in no particular order):
-The Swimmer -So. Bay -What Ever Happened to Pong?/Thalassocracy (hey, if Captain Maximus can do it, so can I!) -Humboldt County Massacre -The Man Who Was Too Loud
That is some hard shit to decide. |

17 songs that begin with “S” .. Frank Black still needs to write songs that begin with the letters Q, U, X, Z
My current favorite 5 songs
I Need Peace (FB&tC)- I love the guitar solo, the last half of the song, the dark rock sounds I Will Run After You (BLD)- Repetition, but done very well. Could have done a better job with out-of-tune back up vocals. Parry the Wind (FB)- I love the math done when mixing the fast 4/4 drums with whatever the sing-along chorus does. Manitoba (SMYT)- great chorus, even the wife likes it. Cult of Ray (CoR) - Enegetic, lots of riffs, a theme song, memories, the line “melting rock into metal again” was a prophesy fulfilled in the late 90s from what I saw.

What a difficult task...choosing favorites! But I'll try...and don't hold me to these five, as they I'm sure will change...however currently they would have to be:
SOLID GOLD BARTHOLOMEW I SWITCHED YOU DOG GONE PARRY THE WIND HI,LOW
Ugh! I already don't like those choices!
