I've been playing guitar for a litle while now, and I'm at a point where it feels that I can't progress much further (I'm not a good guitarist but i need to take it to the next step)
So should I begin to study scales like pentatronic stuff and all that? And do all guitarist use em in solo's and melodies? I just go by ear and play what sounds right. Seems like hard work to learn 'em and really really boring. hmmm i don't know shit about this stuff any tips from more experienced guitarists or whatever is very welcome |

you dont have to, but it would help for soloing im sure. if you understand keys and chord structure and know what all the notes are on the guitar that would go a long way towards soloing becuase you would know what notes would be good to play over what chords

Yes, in order to be good at soloing and improvization, you have to know the scales like the back of your hand. All good solos are just scales. |

Scales are crucial to expanding your musical palette. Pentatonic is a good starting point for all other scales...pick up a book or something that teaches you scales. Learn em, play to shit, and before you know it you'll be soloing.
also, knowing scales gives you a better sense of musical theory in general. And that makes it easier to improvise and come up with stuff right off the bat. |

Stick with that. If you learn scales, remember to grow your hair into a pony tail and buy a waistcoat.

THe more I learn about anything, the more I find that learning the basics, the generally accepted "core theories", (MBA programs call these "Best Practices"), etc/. are really a good idea. Not only does it help your discipline (and Japanese Zen Masters will reiterate that discipline is the way to freedom), it helps you to converse with other musicians (or whatever skill you're trying to master), it gives you a common ground for practice, and it will take you to the next level.
Yes, it is boring to sit and play your scales all day (hypocritically speaking, I should really do it more and will when I'm done having this baby and get that surgery on my hand to remove this ganglion cyst... there I go on a tangent again) but the point is you want to be able to do them on automatic pilot so that they're a weapon in your guitar-playing arsenal.
Back to that "discipline is the way to freedom" -- when you have mastered the basics, when you aren't struggling with scales and doing something in tune with the melody, etc,. then your brain has the room to concentrate on pure creativity, and your creativity isn't limited by your technical skill. Everybody who has great technical skill has those basics down cold, and why let a lack of technical skill limit your creativity?

i guess knowing the scales can't do any harm just as long as it doesn't make you say "oh I can't play this, its not right"
I wish i could do it the matrix way thou, and stick some cable into my brain and voila! I know all the scales. Thanks for the help |

Your horoscope for today:
Scales are good if you want to be able to bust out a generic guitar solo on the drop of a dime. Otherwise, scales put a glass bubble around your creativity and originality. Go with what sounds good. You will even find that throwing in a note that is completely off scale can make things a lot more interesting. Your ability to make money will be phenomenal, but the problem will be holding on to it. Your quick decisions and desire to think big will lead to mistakes. Being too trusting will only lead to trouble. Do the work yourself and this can be a good year. -- Birthday Baby: You will always be one step ahead of the crowd. You will be in the forefront of anything you pursue. Stay away from Libras, Scorpios and scales.
