What the hell is the difference between bi-monthly and bi-weekly? And then what the hell is semi-monthly? |

technically, "bi-weekly" would mean twice a week. Hollywood Reporter and Variety are both bi-weekly..
even though it sounds like it might mean twice a week.
semi monthly you've got me on..

Semi-monthly I guess would mean it tries to happen once a month, but doesn't always. Perhaps sometimes more than once a month, sometimes less. And who uses terms like "fortnight"? The exceptionally cool, that's who. "Jah?" |

Bi-monthly happens every other month (once every two months). Bi-weekly happens every other week (once every two weeks).
Semi-monthly happens twice a month. Lots of companies do their payroll this way, you get paid on the 15th and then the last business day of the month. This way a company's accounting department can close their books for the month, instead of (if the last business day of the month falls on a, say Wednesday) having to accrue salaries paid from a split week into two different accounting months. A semi-monthly payroll works best if all your employees are salaries, as opposed to hourly. (And it's nice to be paid semi-monthly, you're guarantted a paycheck the day before the first of the month when the rent/mortgage is due). In a given year, there are always 24 semi-monthly paychecks, two per month, but 26 biweekly paychecks and there's therefore two months where you get an "extra" paycheck. Makes budgeting a lot easier to get paid semi-monthly. Does this help?
(I speak in payroll terms because my MIS job entails supporting HR a lot...)

But if you look in a Webster's Dictionary (USA) you find that both bimonthly and biweekly are defined both ways: (1) occurring every other month/week AND (2) occurring twice a month/week, with (1) indicating the first definition listed and (2) the second. For semimonthly/weekly only definitions of form (2) are given. |

Probably because in latin, the prefix "semi-" means "Half" (or "to divide in two") so you could probably only ever have form #2 when using semi-. But "Bi-" means two, and can be intrepreted as either plus two or minus two. But in accounting/business/commerce, "bi-" means "every other".

This should probably seal the deal (at least for Americans): how often does your country's Bi-Centennial happen? |

Okay here's my next random thought/pet peeve. CD racks piss me right off. How many specialty CDs do you own that won't fit in the slot?! |

That's why I don't get the CD racks. Just a bookshelf-style thing that accomodates CD-sided things. Exactly that reason.

I could see a funny (albeit short) SNL skit where somebody really anal and with a very bad temper buys a CD rack. They put the first one in fine (it's a normal CD) but the rest of the collection is all these really oddly shaped CD cases and not ONE fits right. The cases get more and more ridiculous and the person gets more and more angry and ends up destroying their entire CD collection by fitting/squashing/cutting in half with a table saw their entire collection.
And when their really mangled looking collection is in the rack with nary a useable/removable disc in sight, the person sits back with a self-satisfied grin in silence and then casually walks over to the radio and turns it on.

Remove the "an amateur sitcom writer" and you'll be correct. That sort of thing might be funny in Canadia, but this is America, beeyoch.

Speaking of Canada, way to start a blackout! Funny, the server is still running, but my buddy is offline. I guess the co-lo has it's own power..cool. FB.net could prolly survive a nuclear strike. Woot! |

What's the deal with that? We have power here, but just after I read that, someone in the office read the headline "Major Power Outage Hits North America" in the Globe & Mail. And now he can't access their site. Power outage? :) |

Well, they've been running in the red for a long time, it was bound to happen. All it takes is a failure in one power plant and you pull those watts out of the system and cause a surge in demand which plants like coal and nuclear can't keep up with. Nuclear in particular, which is a staple of the Ontario (which sounds like it was hit) grid is the slowest to react, where gas is probably the fastest and coal somewhere between. So this surge shuts down other plants before they blow their generators creating more surge and so on. I'd bet any money that's exactly what happened. Probably the only reason we weren't hit here in SK is that SaskPower pulled the links to Manitoba before it trickled this way. |

Hey, I was just thinking, not that I'm paranoid or anything, but the above is pretty much common knowledge... have they said anything about a terrorist attack? Not sure what the goal would be, but...?
Where are you finding this out from, Mike? |

My guess is it was an alien invasion. Terrorism seems likely too, but i'm more hopeful than that! |
