In the midst of organizing my MP3 collection (being the perfectionist I am), I've come to a moral dilema. I organize in the fashion of Artist -> Album, so my main directory is a list of all the artists. Here's the kicker...do you think it should be The Pixies or Pixies? The Beatles or Beatles? The Beach Boys or Beach Boys? The White Stripes or White Stripes? What ever will I do!?! And yes, I am such a perfectionist that this is a big issue for me...I've come to a complete halt. Now, once the directories are named, should the MP3s have the The?

I'd think it should be listed the way the band does it.

Yeah... if you're worried about the alphabetical pain in the #$^@Q^$# of having them all under 'T', list it as White Stripes, The . I mean, I wouldn't do it (mine is just White Stripes for the folder), but maybe it'll help. Then I use the full band name inside the folder for each track. |

Question is, what would you do for a group like "The the". Now you're screwed... |

The The would be The The, since they use 'The' in 'The The'.

Uhm when the Beatles splitt up they still had bussiness meetings Yoko Ono would represent Lennon in these meetings and she always said ''Why did Beatles that?'' and McCartney and Harrisson would say ''For Fuck sake, it's THE Beatles''

Sometimes in my MP3 player, I use my librarian tendencies and do something like "Beatles, The". But that is pretty nerdy, so I dunno... |

Just go by what it says on the cover. It's just Pixies for them, but that's the only one I know for sure. |

Use the Dewey Decimal System to file your MP3s.
I say forget the "the." When you go into record stores, they have the White Stripes under "W" and the Beatles under "B." The The would be under "T" regardless though. I think "the" is usually understood/implied. But as for the Pixies, they don't even have the word "the" on their albums. But still you have to use the word "the" when talking about them or you would get misunderstood:
conversation 1: Jim: I like Pixies Other Guy: Heh, uh, stay away from me you freak.
conversation 2: Jim: I like the Pixies Other Guy 2: Dude, who are the Pixies? Get away from me.
Ok, so I guess the person has to know who the Pixies are in the first place.

That's my system too, well said. I'm anal about these kinds of things. Mind you, occasionally (as in the case of the Pumpkins), they change during their career. In this case, I've got them all with The in front cos that's how it was for their last few albums.

The problem with "The" though is that you end up with a huge section in your alphabetical list of "The's" - everything else is kinda grouped normally (A-S) and then you have a big section of The Beatles, The White Stripes, The Rolling Stones, etc. Which is why I do it my aforementioned goofy way. |

That's what I kinda settled on, doing it the way the band does. So that would make it Pixies, The Beatles, The Beach Boys, The White Stripes. Granted, it does leave me with a lot of "The" bands in my directory, but I can't bring myself to name it Beatles, The...that's just too out there.

The spines of early Pink Floyd records were labelled "The Pink Floyd".
Frankly, I can't even imagine doing anything other than always omitting the "the". No offense intended, but are some of you people autistic?
That said, I must admit I divide by rock collection into roughly two halves: old and new wave, which is not strictly determined by a chronological divide. For example, while Bowie, Iggy, Roxy Music, etc. belong with the new, many groups of much more recent vintage go with the old by virtue of the mindset/attitude I attribute to them. However, I have grouped VU with the old but maybe I need to revisit that. |

This reminds me of something Gary Larson did in one of his books ("Weener Dog Art" I think, not sure). There is an alphabetical index of all the cartoons, and everything is listed under 'T' because they all start with The.
for example:
T The one about dogs dreaming The one about still life The one about how birds see the world
It has A-S listed, and U-Z as well, but with nothing under them.

Pink Floyd is a weird exception...they called themselves "The Pink Floyd" but were often listed as "Pink Floyd." They're generally referred to as "Pink Floyd," which I think sounds better.
I think the whole "The" debate is based on grammar, really...band names are an odd exception. Like Derek said, you can't say you like the Pixies without saying "The," and if you don't say it, you just sound stupid. But written on the album is "Pixies." Notice how the majority of these "The" bands all have plural names, because there's more than one person in the band. Brian Wilson is/was a Beach Boy, and he is/was part of The Beach Boys. You know? Turning band names into nouns and adjectives and back...it's fucked up man.

heh..i've also started sorting stuff by the leading musician, rather than band names.. So i've got a folder called 'Frank Black & Pixies', and all that's in there. Same with 'Lou Barlow', which has Sebadoh, Sentridoh, Folk Implosion, New Folk Implosion, Lou Solo..anything i miss? |

I noticed that many bands do not use the as a part of the complete band name on their albums, others do.For example:
-With the The strokes The white stripes The clash (definitely)The beattles -Without the Pixies Ramones Black sabbath So use the where the band uses it too. To ruin a perfectionist's life some bands like the smashing pumpkins at some albums are "the s.p" at others are "s.p." Try puting the "the" at the end as record shop catalogs do: Breeders,The

It's the first proper GBV release this year, but of course Mr. Pollard has had a few in the Fading Captain series this year. I think this will be the 5th release from him this year, actually.... and there's still another 4 months to go after that!
And ramona, we understand you. We just ignore you. Or at least, mun chien seems to. I on the other hand have always valued and respected your work. Except in the pictionary thread. You just seem lost. It's quite endearing. |

I think it should go
Pixies Beatles, The.
Bands with a "THE"-- stick it at the end of their name. I mean, when you think "Beatles" are you really going to go to the "T"s?? No way, you're gonna start searching the B's. Since half the bands out there begin with a The, it will be a pain in the ass finding most The bands. And when you look up films or bands in an encyclopedia, it's always by their first non-the letter (B for Beatles). |

Regardless of whether or not the band has a "the" in it, you should exclude the "the" when alphabetizing. The Beatles would be listed as "Beatles, the". But you make a good point. some bands I don't know whether or not have a the. Like the ramones. Is there a "the"? |
