I saw Ted a few months ago and it was fun. He brought my friend and I up on stage with him at the end of the night to play the tambourine and sing backup. Why? Because we were hammered. Enjoy the show!

I heard a few songs off of his last record, but I haven't heard Hearts of Oak yet. I hear good things. I'll look into him. He has a voice I can like sometimes, but not others. This may end up being another Grandaddy/Modest Mouse/Beta Band fiasco.... |

can you get me a free t-shirt?
so, the show is actually NEXT tuesday.. i'm in some kind of time warp.. so i'll give my review after that.
i'm with speedy on his voice.. i like most of the stuff, but not all. Hearts of Oak has kind of grown on me lately though, since that was the only CD i had in my car for a while and gave it a GOOD listening to.
don't get me started on modest mouse.. |

this is the first time i've ever peeked into the general chat! i can't not comment on a teddy thread.
i have to say that i have seen ted leo play more than i've seen any other band/artist - at least twenty-five times. and the reason i keep going to ted leo shows is because even though i've seen him that many times, i'm still not bored. every single show still blows me away in one form or another. i love all of his records, from the stuff he did with chisel to "hearts of oak", but it's seeing him live that really kicks my ass.
plus he's one of the nicest dudes i've ever met. |

What's this a ref to? I'm vaguely familiar with mouse, and have one grandaddy disc. Curious what the "fiasco" is. |

so, the show was excellent. i'm sold on Ted Leo. he's got so much energy (unlike me right now - i'm getting too old for weeknight shows)..
one thought occurs to me.. i wish the girl would sing more background stuff.. i love her background vocals on "hearts of oak" (the song).. but that's like one of the only songs she sings on right? and her vocals on that are at the very end.
she has a sexy voice.

Oh, it's not a real fiasco per se, just a personal one. I realy like the music of Modest Mouse, Beta Band and Grandaddy especially, but I can't get into the singers voices. I can take it for a little while, but can't stand it for a whole album. I sorta feel the same way about Ted Leo, but I've only heard a couple songs from him last record, so it's too early to say. |

I can relate to your dislike of the Grandaddy singer's voice...it annoys me a little. But they put on a great show. I saw them open for Coldplay a few years ago and it was probably one of the coolest shows I've ever been to. The movie screen in the background made the show.

Oh, I downloaded "Heart of Oaks" (don't kill me! I wouldn't have bought it anyway and I won't buy it unless I like it, like I always do) and I'm listening to it a bit. Interesting...I don't know if it's my bag tho.

i think he's kind of an aquired taste.. i didn't like it at first, but it's grown on me. and his life performance is intense.
you should check out The Tyranny Of Distance first, perhaps. especially tracks 1, 2 and 5. (but then track 3 bugs the hell out off me)
Hearts of Oak took a while to grow on me.
tell me the intro riff on track 4 doesn't rule though..

We need names floop. I don't know the sequence of the record, so to comment on "tracks 1-5" I'll need names.

what about the riff on "rude boys"? TOTAL thin lizzy.
sarah's recommended ted leo/pharmacists must have songs (who asked me? nobody, but i'm telling you anyway!!):
Abner Louima Vs. Gov Pete Wilson Come Baby Come Treble In Trouble (None) The King of Time Biomusicology Under the Hedge (my all time favorite ted song) Timorous Me The Great Communicator My Vien Ilin Where Have All the Rude Boys Gone? The High Party Hearts of Oak The Ballad of the Sin Eater
And if you've never heard his previous band, chisel, you are totally missing out.
and yeah, dorien sings backup on a bunch of songs and i always wish they turned up her vocals more - on the records, jodi b. from the secret stars also sings backup a lot. |
