It's no secret that he likes to hike in the Santa Monica mountains irooze...so make a day of it! Maybe you'll run into the Black! But I've found the easiest way to meet him. Just stalk him after a gig! He he he! The first time I saw him live (in '98) I was so blown away (and inebriated) that I snuck back into the venue and saw him on stage breaking down his set. Wobbly and loopy, I ascended the stage with the soul (sole?) intent on having Frank autograph my ticket stub. I approached him and asked, "Frank?", to which he kindly focused all his attention on me. He had a big smile on his face, and I politely told him how wonderful I thought the evening was and asked if he could sign my stub as a momento. "Sure!" he replied with enthusiasm, and as I dipped into my pocket to retrieve my ticket, I couldn't find it! No pocket held my precious ticket stub! I felt embarrassed and dopey as The Man stood in front of me watching my fumbling predicament. I gave up and shrugged and explained that I must have misplaced it, but was so moved by standing in his patient presence, I asked in a nervous childish way if I could settle for a hug!! He laughed beamingly and said "Of course!", and the big guy gave me a big bear hug! It was the perfect topper to my first Frank experience! So, irooze...thats what you do! Go see him play, then squirm your way to him afterwards! He's a nice guy if you catch him at the right moment! (Oh...by the way...once I got outside, I found the ticket! In my pocket! Where had it gone? insert twilight zone theme)

I know it always sounds pretty wanky when someone has to come along and go 'yeah, well I met him the other week and he's a great guy' etc etc etc.

However, I met him there the other week. And he's a great guy...

It was pretty much one of the most humbling experiences of my life. A few of us had managed to get tickets to his recent solo show in Dublin and good lord what a show. He did play a few too many Pixies songs, but he was really on top form. Afterwards we all went out to a roof garden and were trying to recover our composure when one one of my friends returned from the toilet telling us he'd just bumped into Bono. So we all ooh-ed and aah-ed over this little brush with the rich and famous when who walks by but the Man himself, Mr Frank Black. I tried to say 'wow, there's Frank Black', but unfortunately it came out in the form of a terribly girlish squeal. He walked by and stood about ten feet away and chatted with a few folk. A few of us eventually managed to summon up the courage to go over and shake his hand and ask him to sign our ticket stubs (all of us are in our twenties yet still couldn't help acting like twelve year olds) which he did without any problems. We all pretty much apologised for bothering him before providing him with compliments ranging from 'you're an inspiration to me' to 'you saved my life!' All of this he took in good nature, before telling my girlfriend that she has a lovely accent (a thrill she tells me she will take to her grave) then trying to get back to the conversation he was involved in before we interrupted him. He was so terribly nice though, a true gentleman.

Anyway, that's my slightly embarrassing story of meeting the great man. My advice is just hang around after the show and keep your fingers crossed. He's back in Ireland in October with the Catholics, a gig that can't come quick enough for me. Plus I haven't heard the new album yet, but that's another thing I can't wait for.

What a true legend.

I saw Frank in Sheffield 2001, after the show dismantling the set. He was right in front of me but for some reason I didn't have the guts to disturb him, which is something I regret because I'd love to meet him.

I managed to have a brief chat with Dave McCaffrey after 2001 Garage show, but was so drunk that all I could manage was 'you guys were fucking amazing, thats the best show Ive ever seen' (or words / slurrs to that effect). He laughed and politely said 'thanks' before I wandered off a little embarrased at my poor level of communication.

I have seen him in el paso, pheonix, san antonio x2, denver, salt lake city, seattle and austin x2.
It got to the point where he recognised us because my wife wore these rabbit ears that caught the bands attention. We would usually wait out back where they loaded the van. They were all nice but I found that when they were loading they were all business. A few times Frank actually barked at some people for bugging them while they were loading gear but I didn't blame him... how are you supposed to sign autographs when your trying to lug a ton of gear out the door? They were like leeches.
We had our picture taken with him a few years ago, it was that years x-mas card!

i think he used to or recently, possibly lived in Van nuys, california as that is
where 'little siam' restaurant is where he lost his favourite chef (from 'if it takes all night')
but of course people travel to restaurants so that bit of sleuthing does no good...
hell,i'm sure somebody posting on this site knows as some guy who posted his ph# hinted at supplying wine to friends of his etc. -on the other hand FB knows all too well the width and breadth of a site like this and is probably purposely 'homeless' right now to avoid such behavior
as fan stalking -he's no paul mccartney -but he is a very smart guy with good reason to be able
to 'just hang' like the rest of us mopes.

i think frank should post on the web an announcement for a free concert in the desert
-really in the desert -there used to be a bar way out in the boonies near parker, AZ
where a guy used a generator and well water to host all day parties for off-roaders
and gun enthusiasts -it wasnt easy at all to find or get out there -if he gave a free concert
far out in god's country (that wild desert he hints at often) then posted with minimal advertising -hell one mention here would do it -it would be a blast seeing who shows
-and i'm sure he wouldn't mind hangin' with the homies for an extended outing given the
circumstances -could make a good film, eh??

well, the whole "dream concert funded by the fans" thing died out.. but that would be a good venue for it. if all you east coasters and mid westerners (and out of countyers) could make it out..

for 9 or 12 miles or so south somewhere shy of the dam (the deepest dam in the world they say...

I used to hang with Frank's step brother Dave, on the Cape. He took
me to see a show out in Northampton one night, and I met Frank. He was so fucking cool. He was working on his album Teenager of the Year, at the time. He told us that he had all the music already recorded and that he went to the library at UMASS to read encyclopedias and stuff - to get ideas for lyrics. Frank also said that he recently tried eating jellyfish for the first time in China or something. He struck me as a real charismatic fellow.

there's a "little siam" on saticoy street in canoga park, ca. perhaps this is the restaurant to which FB is referring? two lyrical references cinch it, don't they?

"it was a real bad night for little saticoy" - st. francis dam disaster

there used to be a taco stand in North Hollywood called Uptown Taco that he used to go to. he mentioned it in an interview way back when, and i checked it out. there was actually a framed photo of him in there too..

so i used to go go there with my friends, hoping to see him at some point, but never did..

the owners said he was always wearing black :)

i think if you really want to "meet" him, do it in the appropriate way and just try and say hello after a gig if he's hanging around.. i've talked to him at a couple of shows, but usually he's pretty busy (for obvious reason).. the rest of the catholics are more accessable..

I like this old story about meeting Frank Black posted to usenet in 1994: http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&th=67ed0287d19604d7&rnum=9

Oh yeah, I also told Frank about how some of you on the net like to
Flame me for stuff I say. So he told me to say this to all of you who
think I am annoying... "FUCK EM"!!!!!!

It's kinda fun to go through the usenet archives and set the search engine to only find "frank Black" references posted in, say, May of 1993 and read what people were saying (or read people posting about the Pixies in 1989-90).
