Whoa! I just discovered this topic, so forgive me for rehashing negative feelings.

"And another thought: while you cretins discuss the finer points of your trendy diets think how millions of people are malnurished, skin on bones and die of starvation each year, so thin that even stray dogs have nothing to pick from their emanciated, dead bodies"
-Why don't you call your elected officials and tell them to send aid to those impoverished countries? There is more than enough food produced on this planet to feed us all. I've never met an obese vegan, and only one that was overweight. I've also never met one that suffers from heart disease or high cholesterol. So where is your insult there? Furthermore, as Dave pointed, veganism is a way of life. I find it dificult to understand the many people that I encounter who say they are vegan because their doctors told them to be and are wearing leather, consuming gelatin-coated pills, using cleaners tested on animals, burning beeswax candles, ad infinitum.

And to iterate Dave's point, the only supplement vegans need take is B-12, assuming a widely varied diet. Of course not all vegans do so, much like not all meat-eaters eat their green, leafy vegetables. Furthermore, for all you dudes out their, check out the recent study by the Imperial Cancer Research Fund's Cancer Epidemiology Unit in Oxford, which showed that vegans have a reduced rate of prostate cancer over meat eaters AND vegetarians. Or ladies, check out the information about studies involving milk and breast cancer collected by Robert M. Kradjian, MD, Breast Surgery Chief Division of General Surgery, Seton Medical Centre. Milk is poison. Granted their is boundless amounts of information out there to support any argument, so look for the studies that aren't funded by a for-profit corporation or a non-profit that is sponsored by a for-profit. Do any societies need to eat meat? What are the non-human animals eating that the humans can't?

What about the inefficient transfer of energy between trophic levels? This is merely an overview (it's been awhile since I've taken plant or general biology) but plants are only able to harness about 10% of the sun's energy, the rest is lost as heat. Every creature that eats plants can only utilize about 10% of that energy (about 1% of the sun's original energy). If we eat meat (i.e. add an intermediary), we can only utilize about 0.1% of the sun's original energy. Our planet could sustain plenty more consumers if we were all more efficient consumers.

I've just read 5 pages of posts and have been drinking all the while (I don't have to work tomorrow morning), so forgive me if I'm rambling or repeating Dave's wise words. I'm also unable to recall all the points I wanted to make, so I'll quit here.

Peace to all,
Jason
