SSMVGD is a set of ten tracks recorded in 2000 that surfaced that summer. I don't have it here with me at work, so my details may be off. I think it's ten tracks. Anyway, FB&C went into the studio, allegedly in the San Francisco Bay area, with new material. They recorded this material but evidently it didn't turn out the way Frank wanted, or maybe it just wasn't ready yet. Apparently Frank handed out a few copies at shows to people close to the band. Of course eventually they leaked out, were posted as mp3s, and ended up on ebay, I guess. His Kingly Cave and I Will Run After You are on there, in different versions, as are Pan American Highway, Constant Sorrow Man, and other tracks that have since appeared on EPs and compilations, some of them from those very sessions, if I'm correct. The SSMVGD refers to a track they cover by the late Doug Sahm, Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day. Them's the basics. Hopefully someone will flesh out this skeletal account of SSMVGD. - Mel

I was there when he handed Jeremy the copy at the 9:30 Club in 2000. We listened to it on the way home (could we be the first people to hear the album? hmmm...). It was all white with the track listing on the back. No art or anything. He said he felt it wasn't that great, but they might release it as an online-only album (perhaps eluding to his prediction that someone would upload it...who knows). The track listing is:

01 - Constant Sorrow Man
02 - Pan American Highway
03 - Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day (Doug Sahm)
04 - Humbolt County Massacre
05 - Angst
06 - Sleep (Donovan)
07 - Sister Isabel (Del Shannon)
08 - Le Cigre Volant
09 - I Will Run After You
10 - His Kingly Cave

All songs here were released at some point (b-sides mostly), some even before this album (alternate recordings). In my opinion, "I Will Run After You" from SSMVGD far surpasses the version on BLD, hands down. It's so much more emotional, powerful, and inspired. The vocals on BLD are kind of tired and lowbeat, the backing vocals don't blend as well, and the ending isn't as powerful. "His Kingly Cave" is pretty much the same, except for the tremolo effect on the guitar.

(let this post be a tiny glimpse at what's to come in the song index/discography *plug plug plug*)

2 possible solutions for getting SSMVGD to the masses, besides mp3s:
A: A 2fer1 cd-r tree using someones really good copy as the master. Quick, easy, cheap, shared workload.
B: Frank could print up a limited batch & sell 'em, possibly w/ the help of this site. I'm thinking of the Residents limited editions. Pricey, but well worth official product. This would be a good excuse to throw $ at frank.
Anyone?

So Dave said no because Frank has said no? Or is it still pending?

You know, i haven't heard back from Frank, so i'm inclined to just go ahead and start posting shows and SSMVGD and just wait and see if the shit hits the roof (which i'm actually pretty confident it won't.)

We gotta figure out the priority here - is this site for Frank, or is it for the fans? Who should we be trying to please?

Thoughts?

I would be less inclined to post whole shows on the ftp. Shows can get traded easily enough, esp w/ this forum. Highlights from shows seems like a good idea: effin' great solos, odd moments, stuff like that. Seems like whole shows would be gumming the works a bit, unless they are of spectacular quality or historical interest. maybe I should be posting this on the suggestions section... off I go... -johnathan yennler

I agree with Visiting Sasquatch - posting SSMVGD is pushing it too far - if it's not ok with the man. They are studio recordings that they may want to release in the future (b-sides, compilations, bonustracks whatever). Posting them here without permission is lack of respect for other peoples' work - period. I know - they have been floating around on the net - but I still think it is wrong to organize access to these songs from here. Maybe someone could suggest to the man a limited "frank black forum" version of it for sale to members here? Then we'd even get the songs in good quality.

A limited edition run would be ideal. It could even be pre-order only, w/ spare packaging. MP3s don't give the songs the credit they deserve. Usually Feldman's keys get pushed back in the mix.

I would definitely spend some good cash to pick up SSMVGD and who better than to give my money to than Frank himself. He should also record his shows and sell them on line. I would buy all of those as well. There are a few bands that do this. It would just be a good way for Frank to make some extra money and give his die hards non stop material. Just a thought.

Hold on, Frank gave SSMVD to a fan to post on the internet. I'm not sure why he'd have a problem with it being posted. Maybe there are legal obligations involving the songs that turned up on B-sides for Dog in the Sand singles, but otherwise, If Frank gave it to a fan and had no problem with the sharing files on Napster, I'm not sure why he'd be so concerned.

Did he give it to a fan w/ intentions of said posting, or was that the outcome regardless of the fact? Either way, it probably doesn't matter if SSMVGD gets ftp'd or not. I would just rather have a legit copy on hard, shiny plastic in my hands. Post wav. files instead of mp3's if you're gonna post anything. I don't wanna miss any Feldman. He gets compressed right out of those things. -johnny

I think dave's initial idea about only posting publicly broadcast recordings on the FTP site was shrewd approach to a sticky situation. the reasoning behind that (not so much infringing on frank as the broadcaster itself) is legally full of holes but could be viewed by FB & TC as ethically sound.

There is no good reason to risk having the FTP site come under fire by posting entire bootlegged concerts or a complete studio album that was apparently leaked by Frank, but has yet to be officially commercially released. He could (and might) choose to put the thing ouut himself at any time in the future.

If folks out there really want to get ahold of complete live shows or SSMVGD, they should take the extra 30 minutes and write a friendly e-mail to one of the people on the trading boards of this site who is willing to swap CD-Rs. If they have nothing of their own to trade, see if someone will burn them one live disc for two or three blank ones.

This way, the fans can PRIVATELY disseminate whatever they want, and this site doesn't look underhanded or insensitive *. Connections have already been made and stuff like this is already going on, so I don't really understand why some folks insist on changing the basic format of the FTP site.

To start padding the FTP site with such material just seems like a real can of worms with no big payoff.

~ Peter Radiator

* For example, after the first of the year, I'm planning to dub at least 10 copies of a Hi-Fi VHS NTSC compilation of my rarest Pixies clips from the USA, the UK and Europe. I'm going to offer them to the first 10 people who have something in their collections that I can use. I guarantee that within a few weeks of those trades, there will be plenty more second-generation copies available for anyone who wants them.

OK, the way I see it, this is a site for fans. I say, post everything that has not been published officially. If FB or the Cs will feel otherwise, I'm sure Frankus Blackus will show up and let us know.
