Okay, some time ago I read that in Frank's freshman year at U-Mass he got roomed with J Mascis, and they never got along because J Mascis was always partying or something like that. I haven't heard this mentioned in awhile, so I'm pretty sure it's just be B.S. I know Joey was Frank's roommate at one point and everything, but stranger things have happened. Anyone hear this or can confirm or disconfirm it? |

Never listened to J Mascis and now, there is no way I ever will.
Even the name J Mascis makes me sick ever since this forum started.

i saw j mascis play in Ann Arbor. he was doing a little accustic tour........he was a dickhead then, and it seems like he still is. he should hangout with Michael Jackson, they both seem to be on the same maturity level. they should have a sleep over and tickle eachother under the sheets. |

j is a good good music player and song-writer. great guitarist. don't know really any specifically personal things i could say about him or his life. musically though, i can think of two things offhand: thurston moore said he's a fucking genius with the guitar, and back in like 89 or 90 kurt cobain asked if he could join dinosaur jr., and was denied. so, thats two musicians i respect a lot that i know respected j, musically if not personally. plus i love his music; i only listen to it in week long phases, maybe one or two a year, but a lot of music is like that, its relevant only to certain psychological modes a person might run into, and some people may avoid them entirely. j mascis is a kind of cross between neil young and some kinda benevolent and emotional but violent monster from the year 2357, definately a fantastic element to the music and the artwork, while the lyrics remain pretty contemporary, so the monster is marooned in this time/place(thats part of the drama to it, alienation a major theme just like nirvana), and i've never seen him live but he supposedly plays really loud guitar like husker du or sugar did. and the drummer is good, something about the drum/guitar relationship that sets the music apart. that was something djr was known for. |

i'll throw my two cents in. i saw j mascis at umass amherst about 2 years ago (with mike watt on bass. kick ass!) and it was seriously the LOUDEST show i've ever been at. it was ridiculous really. but the guy is a genius on guitar. it was amazing. |

I heard it was Joey who roomed with J. Probably just another slice of rock and roll mythology. J used to write cool songs, around ten years ago.

J still writes cool songs... check out Free So Free. I recently caught him in concert. If it wouldn't be an understatement I'd describe his guitar playing as mind-blowing.
Here's a bit of a Mojo article (March '01) on the Pixies and beyond, dealing with the U-Mass days (with a Mascis mention):
"Charles Thompson certainly didn't form the Pixies with a view to leaving his mark on rock history. He and Joey Santiago were students at the University of Massachusetts in the mid-'80s, whom the college placed together in an accommodation suite. Santiago, who was studying economics, was a Filipino from an affluent family in Manila. Thompson's childhood had been peripatetic, uprooting him four times from the east coast to the west before he was 18.
They had both brought guitars with them. "The first song we jammed together was Wilson Pickett, In The Midnight Hour," Santiago recalls. "Right away he had the charisma. But we were squares at that age, man. We were serious about our studies. J. Mascis [later of Dinosaur Jr] was at U-Mass at the time, with his Cure hairstyle. He was a lot cooler than we were.""

I had the pleasure of seeing J Mascis (and the Fog, his new band) in DC @ the Black Cat a month or two ago. It was definitely a LOUD show (he was cranking it through two Marshall stacks) and a great show indeed. He even threw out a couple of Dinosaur tunes (Freak Scene and a few more...) i never knew he had the reputation of being an asshole and what not, but honestly, who cares. He is not my buddy or someone i hang out w/...just keep the music coming. Same for those who are self-designated critics of Frank Black and his personality...he is not your friend, or even your acquaintance. Just listen to the music. That is the whole point. |

PsychicTwin, as you seem new to the forum, some of the anti-J banter on this site is towards a member with the name J Mascis, not the real J Mascis. I'm a fan of Dinosaur Jr. |
