I have the show and during "The Creature Crawling" just stops,, and then someone yells something (cant tell what) and apparently LEAVE the stage? They play some music for a while, and frank comes and apologizes.
He grabbed some guy by the collar? Did he throw him back into the crowd? What did the guy do to deserve it, did he come up on stage or what? Did they throw this guy out? Did frank STORM off of stage after that?
Maybe shit like this is why he no longer even interacts with the crowd.

i was at this gig, your probably listening to my tape on cd, but some kid jumped up on stage (the 2nd or 3rd of the night) but he smacked franks guitar stand into his mouth during a song then it fell and hit his guitar...Frank just stopped and everyone left for about 10 minutes..He came and said everyone needed to cool down including him |

At a theatre show in Atlanta on FB's short opening stint for the Ramones (this was just before the release of TOTY), a bunch of people were moshing around and doing the crowd surfing thing right near the front. It was getting pretty rough and most of the people there who had come specifically to see Frank were getting really bent out of shape.
After something like the third song, Frank spoke directly to the moshers in an extremely condescending and "fatherly" tone. I wish I could remember it verbatim, but it was something along the lines of "everywhere we go there's always some jerks who scream my name over and over again for the entire length of the show. Usually, these are the same people who pass themselves around on top of everybody else and kick people in the face while they're doing it. The funny part is that all these guys who mosh around and try to stage dive always seem to think they're my biggest fans. But you know what? You're not. My real fans are the ones in the first five rows that get here early and stake out a spot so they can pay attention to the music and what we're doing up here, and they're the ones who are getting the shit knocked out of them by you and all your buddies. So we can finish the set, or you can keep it up, but it's one or the other."
Within a few minutes, the rude behavior had calmed down by about 90%.
As I recall, Frank was wearing a pair of 1950's-style plaid golf shorts and black socks with some clunky black lace-up shoes. It was a great look, and one that I am fond of myself...

That's a great story, and confirms once again that Frank is one classy guy.
(Side note: my husband is big on the plaid shorts-dark socks thing but has completely run afoul of any sort of coolness by committing the cardinal sin of wearing socks with sandals. I'm ready to buy him some of those old man sock garters to complete his shame.) |

I'm glad to know that frank hates the moshers as much as I do. There's nothing worse than some drunk jack-ass starting a mosh pit while you're trying to enjoy a concert, and if I was at a Catholics concert and someone was moshing near me, I would be twice as pissed off.
I never knew Frank toured with the Ramones. Someone needs to put together a list of bands Frank has opened up for. So far, all I know is Pearl Jam, and now the Ramones. Of course, that may be it for all I know.
Socks with sandals is definitely a sin, but you see a lot of people doing it in GA. The worst is going to FL and seeing people doing it. You can always pick out the tourists that way. |

This is yet another thing that's already done and will be up on the site at some point in the future (are we shooting for 2005, dave? :)). Go to the main site and seek out the gigography.

<sigh> I know. It's terrible. He claims that they're more comfortable with socks and that he's not just doing it to torment me.
It should either be shoes with socks or sandals without. You can't have it both ways. We should start a petition. |

Hey NimrodsSon, if you go into the Baker's Dozen: Music thread, somewhere towards the end there is a list of bands Frank/the Pixies have opened for/had open for them. It's not complete by any means, but it's a start.
And socks with sandals is terrible. It is a crime against fashion common sense. The best is light colored shorts, sandals, and black socks that to mid calf or knee. Nothing says "I am not in any way shape or form cool" like that get up. |

I think he enjoys being perverse in his fashion choices. I informed him at lunch that people in no less than four countries took offense in his choice of footwear, and I think that it pleased him immensely. Oh well. Into every life a little rain must fall. I should buy him some white shoes to wear after Labor Day. |

White pants, with as high a waist as is physically possible. The white shoes are key, but the socks must not match the shirt, whatever awful pattern/color the shirt. I saw an old feller today with orange plaid pants and an purple plaid shirt. Ridiculous/aweseome, that's all I have to say.
And mere, your husband needs help. Some bad fashions are fun/funny. Some are offensive. I think we know which category they socks/sandals fall into. Next thing you know, he's rocking out to Todd Rundgren at some backyard BBQ with his chums drinking a Bud Lite. You can kiss a decent sex life goodbye after that. |

White trash would be maybe with the sox and sandals, but add a white stained up wifebeater and you're in business. |

i remember at a Pixies gig in Hollywood (must have been around 1990) someone threw a shoe and hit Frank's guitar.
he calmly kept playing.. and then during the next song or so, he lost it and started screaming at someone (someone very specific) in the crowd near the front.. i couldn't hear what he was saying, but his face was so red, and he was so pissed, it was kind of scary.. yet cool.
anyway, my favorite story of all time (along these lines) is Big Galoof's story about Dave McCaffrey beating someone up at a show in NY.. (who threw beer on his pants).. that story always warms my heart. |

McDave beat someone up? I find that hard to beleive. At the Portland show last year, someone threw their baseball cap on stage and it hit him right in the face. He just kept on playin'... swaying back and forth with a dreamy look in his eyes, white man's overbite and all.... |

Nothing says cool like a hawaiian shirt with huge sleeves where they poke out about a foot from your arm, and a nice pair of pleated khaki shorts, a baseball cap from a cellular phone company or car dealership, and leather sandals with those fancy navy blue socks that you wear with a suit.
If this is not your current wardrobe, you need to get with the times. We aren't in the 1950s anymore!

Eww! At least my honey doesn't dress like that! He once wore a dress for a year with a pair of size 13 Chuck Taylors held together with duct tape. I think I'll forgive him the socks n' sandals thing as long as he keeps pairing them with his "Young and the Restless" T-shirt. |

Thanks for the link mere and thanks for the story galoof. I don't know why I never read that... must have been back when I had a life and I didn't sit here all day reading/posting. What a sorry existance that was!
mere, don't tell you don't know about the white man's overbite. You've seen "When Harry Met Sally", no? |

Oh yeah, I know it from the movie (it's an airplane scene, right?) But whereas I think it's an endearing trait of McDave's, you think it's goofy. Hence my remark. I should have said, "Who looks goofy now?" (I'm probably just defensive cause I tend to do the overbite thing too when rockin' out. I think it must be the refuge of people without much of an upper lip.)
Anyway, I love that story. |

i was there..... these two kids mostly kept crowd surfing and after about 6 songs or so frank asked them to stop. then later this kid was surfing again and kicked the mic stand and frank grabbed him by the shirt and pulled him on stage....the kid ran and frank tried to get him to no avail. then frank got pissed and threw his telecaster across the stage and walked off. then as you hear on the recording he comes back out and apologizes. fun stuff. ryan |
