Dear Sarah,
By the way, tonight at work, (my extra job is at this bar by my house in hip East Nashville.) I was playing SMYT in the bar and I swear, I have never seen so many people who had never heard of Frank Black (philistines) come to me and ask "Who is this, what is this album?" and then proceed to ask about this Frank Black guy. People were REALLY DIGGING THIS ALBUM.
The point here is, if you are wondering about how people will react to this album, I think you really have a potential to move this record. These people were just ordinary jaded Nashville"Heard it all, Next" people and they were commenting on the songs, especially "Everything is New", "My favorite Kiss" and "The Jaina Blues".
If you were looking for test reactions before the release, things couldn't look more positive from the response I have seen.
Just thought you guys might like to know. |

Some Frank Black albums go over really well with crowds.
One time I loaded up a 5 disc changer, and had Devil's Workshop in there with 4 other non-FB CDs and hit random. Everytime a DW song played people would perk up and ask me who it was. |

Yeah, time to throw out those four Yanni CD's you've been clinging to. ;) |

That's awesome!! Thanks for the story - I'm getting really antsy waiting for reviews to start rolling in cause if the rest of the world doesn't love it as much as I do, I will be so sad.
(The day after FB's solo show at the Fez, I was talking about it to one of my friends at a bar and I was like "and I got to meet Frank Black finally, which was cool..." and the guy next to me nearly fell off his stool and was like 'OH MY GOD! I LOVE FRANK BLACK!' and totally freaked out for the next ten minutes.) |

More proof that the fans are Frank's best promo machine. Way to go dude! Hope you sold the man a buncha extra copies by doing that. I think I've already managed to sell him at least 20 copies to unsuspecting folks thus far. One of them being a friend of mines father and one of his friends (they are both in their mid 50's TOO)...hell, they tried to take MY copy, but I was like, nah, sorry, it's a promo, can't let it out to folks before it's actually released (haha, I wanna make sure they have to GO BUY IT)!
Just more proof that a leak like this will help an artist like FB who has such a strong "grass roots" following far more than it will hinder. |

Sarah, I HOPE the reviews that come in are good ones, but don't be too disheartened if you get a couple of lame reviews that reek of "I only listened to this record once and didn't allow it time to properly sink in and grow on me, therefore I'm immediately writing it off cuz it's not the flavor of the week" a la last summers Rolling Stones reviews of BLD & DW. Those were some of the absolute lamest reviews I've ever read. |

Will Frank be doing any PR-tastic stunts to promote the album? Like being romantically linked to a Spice Girl? Or turning up at the Oscars in a Versace dress held together with giant safety pins?
As for lame reviews, wait for the NME to give its inauspicious and unasked for opinion on SMYT. Too much of the music press is governed by 'flavour of the week', particularly previously respectable rags like the NME and Rolling Stone (NME is now outsold by Kerrang).
