Living in the East of France, I've been very lucky to attend yesterday night a concert by Joe Jackson's Band who were performing in Luxemburg.
The room was small enough to create intimicy with the men on stage: first good point. Then, a big part of the crowd were hardcore fans, no need to say that the ambiance was likely to be on top. And it was!
Personnally, I had just discovered the band's music 2 days before the show (how novice of me!), but a friend of mine had kept telling me pretty good things about them. Now, I have to confess that he was quite far from the truth: these men are Ubermenschen (german word for Supermen)!
When Joe and his band went on stage to start with 'One More Time', I just began jumping on and on until the end of the night without really understanding what the hell was going on in the place!
The boys are absolute amazing musicians, melodies so entertaining, and their repertoire is extremely ecclectic, something i usually appreciate (from jazz to punk, bubblegum pop to beautiful ballads, with most of the time a remarkable 'sens of swing').
Top moments of the show: when Joe was suddenly left all alone on the stage and begin to play John Lennon's 'Girl' on the piano. Was all the more fabulous that it was the very first Beatles' song I had been introduced to in my chilhood. Perfect interpretation, something like heaven, or so close...
Other great moment: when the crowd spontaneously started to sing alone with the band on 'Don't wanna be like that'. Even I who had never heard that song was able to compete with hardcore fans and left the neighbourhood jealous of my vocal skills.
Anyway, a really great souvenir and probably one of my top 5 shows ever. Unless Frank decides to perform in the area, of course!
Joe Jackson... ' will never forget that name. |

Well cedric, I've never heard of him, but based on your glowing review, I'll check him out. Anyone who respects the Lennon can't be all bad. Unlike people who respect the Lenin. They're all bad. |

In case you're serious this time, JJ is that old-timer who did songs like "Is She Really Going Out With Him" and "Stepping Out," which you may have heard over the airwaves back in the day. |

What do you mean, "what do I mean"? And I don't have any JJ albums, just heard a few of the old hits. |

You said: "in case you're serious THIS TIME". Yes, I'm serious this time about checking him out. I plan on aquiring songs by this fellow (illegally, of course) and listening to them. And this isn't like the time I rented Fiddler on the Roof. I will ACTUALLY listen to the songs. |

Joe Jackson is fucking AWESOME. Saw him live in 2000, December 3, I think, at the Sheldon Auditorium in St. Louis. Fucking GREAT. Probably the best show I've ever seen, and this is speaking as a die hard Frank Black fan. He just totally brought down the house, and he closed with (as opposed to opened with) "One More Time" - just fantastic.
Don't Wanna Be Like That is also a fantastic song - love that one. I can't remember all of the tunes that he played when I saw him live, but that's a-okay. His version of "Any Major Dude" by Steely Dan and his rendition of his very own "Hometown" was more than enough to bring down to my fucking knees, man. He was just wonderful. Also, SpeedyM, don't listen to Pioneer, since he's only "heard a few of the old hits," Joe Jackson is a fantastic musician AND songwriter, and don't let his assumptions deter you away from great music.

I would recommend his first album--Look Sharp. That's the one that has "Is she really going out with him?" I used to have it on vinyl years ago and just got it on CD a couple of weeks ago. Excellent.

Yeah, I came off as a dick there, too. No harm intended; seriously. Let us now be righteous to each other.

Ahhh, the last time I saw Jackson was the "Night and Day" tour back in '83, at the ARagon Ballroom in Chicago (known also as the Aragon BRAWLroom), where two weeks earlier I was moshing to the Clash. For this, they didn't have the 20 foot stage, he just used a regular stage, no bouncers, and had tables with little lights on them set up on the dance floor, like a little jazz club or something. He had his whole "big band" with him, it was wonderful, it was magic. Glad to hear he's still out there enchanting audiences. Thanks for the reccomendation, if he makes it to the Midwest I'll be there. |

Blackpurse - fights at the Aragon? I've only been there once, but it seemed like a pretty respectable place to me, and I've never heard of any brawls going on there. Do tell.

Well, this was back in the early 80s, when all those punk bands started touring, and people weren't used to the concept of moshing (then called slam dancing), so if you were there to see, say, the Clash, many people got freaked out. The stage they put a band on was at least 15 feet high, and people would climb up to the edge and hang by their arms. I remember getting dressed for shows at the 'brawlroom. You'd wear a body suit, a good strong pair of tight fitting jeans, and ironclad bra, and your "gnarly thrash boots" not to hurt anybody, but to protect yourself. We didn't call it "body surfing then" but I do remember being propellied up in the air by the crowd during the chorus of "Should I stay or should I go". Oh, and they served beer, if you bought it, in these tubs that you'd normally get popcorn in at a movie theater. Not the small size, either. The "Big Is More" size. All liquored up, sweating like pigs, dressed to swill, and onstage walks the Clash. Too much fun.
