not that any cares, but i'm driving cross country back to Los Angeles from Baltimore, leaving Saturday..
finally, my work here has come to an end and it's time to go home..
it's been pretty grueling on the east coast.. (broke with my girlfriend, got into a bad car accident).. but it's also been a fun (made some good friends, and met a new girl too)..
but that's not my point..
i'm wondering.. for those of you who have made the grand trek.. any recommendations on must-see stuff?
this is actually the second time i've driven cross-country (both ways) and i've seen some cool stuff.. but i'm wondering if anyone has any particular recommendations (i am going to be stopping in Vegas before returning homee of course).. i'm taking the 70 this time..
you know, really good BBQ restaurants or weird ghost town type stuff..
lay it on me Frankies..
ALSO!!!
think of some of the ultimate road trip music.
obviously all music is good for a road trip, but you have to admit, there is some stuff that really hits the spot on a long ass trip through the middle of nowhere...
any input will be appreciated.. (and/or track listings for "ultimate road trip mix")

It's been a long time since I've made a long-haul kind of journey. When I was 17 I drove from Little Rock, AR to Vancouver, B.C. and back. I remember that, after driving all day and all night and into the next day, I ended up somewhere in the desert around Ely, Nevada listening to The Band's The Weight over and over and doing off-road donuts and it sounding just perfect.
I think Black Letter Days is a mighty fine road album. I like Slim Whitman in the middle of nowhere. Rev. Horton Heat always keeps me awake. And honestly, in the car, you can never go wrong with a little Zep.
Vaya con dios, floop! Have a good trip. |

A long road trip is an experience that should be made at least once a year and it's the perfect occasion to listen to entire albums or new stuff you would never put on your home stereo for various reasons.I don't know what music can be defined as road music but this is what i would take with me: - Theatre of hate - Westworld (if u don't know them don't mind the name they aren't a death metal band) - Pj Harvey - To bring you my love(when you get nostalgic) - El camminos - Reverb Explosion (when you get sleepy) - Ramones - Rocket to russia(same as above since both cds are less than 40 minutes long) - Jon Spencer Blues Explosion - Acme plus (when the road seems to be endless) - Dire Straits - Money for nothing (because there are some of the best songs ever written) - Dream syndicate - Ghost stories (just because) Have a nice trip. -

have a safe trip floop. as for music - i reckon rolling stones 'exile' or 'beggars banquet' or even bowies 'space oddity' are ideal. have fun.

When Cult of Frank and I made our legendary trek across western canada to Van City, Tacattle and Portland for three glorius nights of FB and his C's, we listend to everything released by the man, in order, starting with Sufer Rosa/Come On Pilgrim. It was awesome. By the time we got to the show, we were so pumped to hear that stuff live, we nearly soiled ourselves. And of course by "nearly" I mean "throughout the concert and the trip home". Have a good trip, enjoy the country, and drive safe. Cheers! |

Oh wow, I'm going cross country in a few weeks too, coast to coast. I'm flying to LA then driving back with my friends. Most likely we won't be speaking by the time we get back. |

I, too, am going to make a cross-country foray in the near future. I'm moving from northern Virginia out to San Francisco (actually, the Berkeley/Oakland area is a little more likely)...mainly to pursue music a little more seriously and to do so in an area that doesn't have a completely flaccid and pathetic music scene. Another reason is the climate. And a pretty big reinforcing factor is that one or two of my best friends live out there so it won't be the most lonesome experience.
Me and my good friend Matt did a cross-country trip from SF out to DC a couple of years ago...really an unforgettable experience. We must have listened to every album that both he and I owned, and some more than once (that is a fuckload of music, in case you have any doubts.) Highlights of the trip: seeing Iron Butterfly live in Washington State (I shit you not), Yellowstone National Park, and other various adventures and mis-adventure along the way. The trip was a little rushed because we were trying to make it back before fall semester of our senior college year started, but it was nonetheless an awesome journey. |

that's pretty funny..
i once put Foxy Lady on repeat with my (now ex) girlfriend in the car just to see how long it would take her to realize it was on repeat.. i seriously got up to like 5 or 6 times..
repeat can be an enjoyable, absurd experience.
when i used to work at a coffee shop this crazy girl and i put "New York New York" on repeat for almost the whole afternoon. we went through all the stages of mild amusement, to laughter, to numbness, to nervous laughter, to anger, to hysteria and back to mild amusement several times over.. which is even more fun when you've had like 5 espessos..
try it sometime |

thanks for the input everyone.. if i take any cool pictures i'll post one up here..
and obfuscate, word up to the When Your Heartstrings Break.. Beulah is probably my favorite band right now (next to the big F).. i can't wait for the new album and tour.
cult_of_frank, i'll be sure and keep the window cracked.. mainly to prevent suffocating my kitten with certian fumes that may occur during the trip (especially after eating lots of BBQ)..
psychic, i'm sure you'll love the bay area.. i lived up there for a while, and eventually would like to escape from LA and head back.. i'm jealous.
thanks for the advice and well wishes everyone.. [see, i responded to almost everyone] |

i've been living in Charles Village. right next to Johns Hopkins University.
it's ok.. i kind of hated Baltimore for a while (mainly because of my mass bad luck streak and like a solid month of horrible weather).. but it's grown on me. especially since i met this cutie pie.
there are some good bars and restaurants |

Joy of joys, in Augusy I'll be driving a U-Haul while towing my car from Michigan to Northern California. To make it worse, the truck is unlikely to have a CD or tape player. Ugh. This will be my third cross-country trip in a UHaul in the past 5 years.
I have to disagree with mun chien that this is a trip that should be experienced once a year. There is not a whole lot of culture to be experienced when you're confined to a US interstate (and you are pretty much confined to one when driving a UHaul while towing a car). |

What a whiny post that last one was.
Floop, do you have to get to LA quickly? It's out of your way, but the badlands of western South Dakota are just tremendous and then northern Wyoming with the Devil's Tower and then Yellowstone are a must see. Yellowstone, however, is probably a zoo in August.
On the southern route, Flagstaff and Prescott (off the interstate) are beautiful spots in western Arizona. |

darwin, thanks for asking..
i made it back in 4 days, and without any speeding tickets (which is a true rarity for me)..
you're right about certain parts of the interstate lacking culture.. i mean, there are looooooong stretches of nothing. . but Colorado is absolutely beautiful. it's almost worth taking the 70 just for Colorado.. and the desert is always beautiful.. going through Kansas is kind of painful..
i hardly took any pictures.. but here are some..
a huge fucking cross:

and my cat again:
i told you i didn't take many..

Hey, the cat grew.
Last time I drove all the way across Kansas, the speed limit was still 55 m.p.h. I could tell when a town was coming up by the nauseating silage smell. It took me 14 hours, and when I hit the Colorado line, I got out of the car and kissed the dirt. Fucking horrible to drive all the way across that state. Apologies to all from Kansas. I hate your state. |

Hey Floop, was that huge cross in the Texas Panhandle? Very subtle, like most things in Texas. |

darwin, this is actually a different cross. i've seen the one you're talking about though, off the 40.. apparantly that's like the largest cross in the world.
the last time i drove cross country a friend was with me and we stopped at it for kicks.. the guy who owned the land and built the cross was there, and gave us a little museum tour or sorts, explaining why he built the cross etc.. (he was angry about all the XXX stores off the highway and figured he'd counteract evil by building a gigantic cross)..
anyway, long story short, we felt sort of guilty because our original intention of stopping was because i wanted to get a tromp l'oeil style photo of me, making it look like i was nailed to the cross..
but the guy was totally cool and very heartfelt about his beliefs.. so we were respectful (and took the pictures after he left) |

The Grand Canyon isn't that far off of I-40 if you have a couple of days to spare. Also, somewhere near there is the HUGE Barriner crater where an meteorite hit. It's impressive:
http://antwrp.gsfc.nasa.gov/apod/ap971117.html
Sedona is also in that area. Very pretty, very new agey, very touristy.
I would recommend driving through northern Arizona and New Mexico (I-40), rather the southern interstate (I-10?), where the scenery is better and it can be quite a bit cooler (the birds are better on the southern route if you're into that). |
