OK, I've seen this done on other message boards. Perhaps it's been done here? Who are some of the famous folks you've met? And I'm not talking about the cousin of the drummer of Coldplay or whatever. Quality control, people, please! Mind you, I consider Groupie-ism to be a character flaw, so be careful. Here are some famous folks I've (briefly) met:
Frank Black David Thomas (Pere Ubu) Paul Theroux (Author) Ian Anderson, Martin Barre, and David Pegg from Jethro Tull (hee hee) Elton John
OK, Elton and I didn't really meet. We merely locked eyes in a Tower Records store. That's as far as it went. Sheesh, and I always thought I was cute. Anyway, I'm willing to meet artists I admire at meet & greets, but I never stalk them or try to make friends with them. It just seems so frickin' sick and creepy to confuse the artist with the man/woman and expect friendship or whatever in return. Anyway squared, I guess the only living human I idolize is Dr. Brian Douglas Wilson, and given another chance I would like to get his autograph, so sue me.

No kidding. Did you recommend the fine red-striped tube sock? Socks sans frontiers? By the way, the Tower Records store where I saw Elton was in Boston, my city, too. |

Hmm..
I met Tyrese (sp?) in an airport snack bar. (Didn't recognise him. A companion did..!)
Roberta Flack gave me a kiss on the cheek.
I think that's it, really. I can remember being pretty excited about seeing a few other celebs, but can't remember when or who.

Who have I met? Hmm..Frank Black and everyone else on the November tour. Chris Martin from Coldplay. I'm drawing blanks here. I can't think of anyone else. Bill Morrison, one of the artists/writers for The Simpsons comics, said I did a good impression of Nelson's laugh years ago. |

alright, a name-dropping thread!
since everyone's doin' it, i'll add mine.
at the top of the list, next to Frank, is:
Bob Dylan.. (got to meet him last year because i worked on his movie MASKED AND ANONYMOUS that comes out later this month.. i'm just stoaked that i can say i met Bob Dylan.. even though it was very brief and meaningless)
have also met:
-Frank (a few times at shows) -Charleze Theron (was friends with a director i worked for. yikes!!) -Sam Rami (worked next door to us when i was working at Sony - met him in the copy room - totally cool guy.. i didn't know what he looked like and i was like "what are you working on?" and he said "Spiderman".. and it was like, ohhhhhhhhh.. ok. totally mellow guy) -Robert Rodriguez (got to work with him on a film) -Antonio Banderas (was in above film) -Terrence Malick (came to a screening of a film i worked on.. i think he's one of the greatest filmmakers of all time..) -Jennifer Tilly (met her at a screening.. growl! ) -Elisabeth Shue (friend of an editor i worked with.. growl [but she's pretty unfriendly]) -Ben Stiller (saw him in the bathroom at Sony Pictures.. he said "hey") -Barry Sonnenfeld (produced a film i worked on.. his favorite food is El Pollo Loco) -John Travolta (is in the film i'm working on now .. i've seen him here and there and given the head nod).. -Neve Campbell (was in line with her at a studio commesary .. she made some comment about the food and gave me a niiiiice smile. say what you will about Party of Five, i think she's pretty hot)

Hey now! I'm getting a bad reputation around here.
I do confess that I got so drunk with Syd Straw that I had to call in sick to work the next day. Other than that, I've never done anything too flaky when meeting someone. I did give Frank an xmas present last year, but it felt like the thing to do. I also baked him cookies last April, but that was my (then three year-old) daughter's idea. She said, "Will you talk to Frank Black?" I said, "I don't know, Z." She said, "Can I see a picture of him?" "Okay." "Well, we should bake him some cookies. Frank Black looks like he would like a cookie." Who could say no to that? I gave them to Dave P. after the show and got the hell out of there.

Frank Black - last week. Nels Cline - at a Geraldine Fibbers gig Bob Bert - at the same gig, he was opening with the Chrome Cranks. Shook his hand and took a nice picture of him. The Little Rabbits (French pop band). Daniel Smith of the Danielson Famile.
I think that's all... I never recognize celebrities in the street, so I must have missed a few opportunities of meeting people.

Stevie Ray Vaughn - he used to play at parties in Austin before he hit it big. One night he was playing lots of his blues stuff, which is great, but since I knew about half the dance floor was heavily lateralized, I went up to him between songs and told him. He smiled and broke into a mini-set of Hendrix covers. |

So, I was all prepared to post and put in some names, you know, nothing fancy, just the regulars, "Frankus Badassus", "Scotty Boutier", that sort of thing. Maybe a lil' "Chris and Jay from Sloan" action, or something. And then floop posted. And I thought... why am I even alive? I mean sure, sometimes I casually run into famous directors in my copy room (anyone seen "Men in Back III: the KY Conspiracy"?), but I never have the nerve to ask them what project they're working on. Honestly floop, it sounds like you have, at minimum, the most exciting life ever lived, with the nod going to James Bond, but you still being very high on the list. All of the above rambling basically means I don't much care for you, and tons (TONNES) of famous people have come through my little burgh. Remember Krycheck (sp?) from X-Files? I saw him here once, he was filming a movie. Remember the smoking man, also from x-files? He was here filming a television series. Remeber the soundtrack, "Song in the Key of X" from the show X-Files? Frank Black had a song on that. So six degrees that and I'm practically a member of the damn band. Take that Mr. Nod From John Travolta.
By the way, Six Degrees of Frank could be a fun game for the Pong section. Royalties can be sent to my offshore acount. |

Frank Black James Brown (met him at the airport and he told me to stay in school) Krist Novoselic (met him and Curt Kirkwood and Bud Gaugh at an Eyes Adrift concert) Kirsten Dunst (In the jurassic park days) Mike Love and Bruce Johnston (last Friday at the concert)

damn Floop, how many famous people has your beard met?
Big Galoof, that is awesome you met Buckner, I am big fan.
My list is short and not appropriately detailed:
-Pauly Shore (13 years ago at least, bus boy at restaurant, sat at his table, got into show for free, learned how to curse subsequently) -Girls against Boys - (came too my school and played the basement for 1$ ticket prices, I just walked in, sat down right next to the band at their merch table and started talking to the lead singer about song writing, there were like 50 people there tops, I actually gave him my copy of pistolero that night, I remember him saying frank was literate and I should liberate or something, they all signed my copy of... the blue one that came out in 96', x-head is x-vibe, in dust we trust etc.) -Drummer from Pavement (does that count? he's my neighbor) -the singer from Geraldine Fibbers, what's her name again? I was drunk and trying to get her to come party with me, I wrote her this 3 page poem before the show and gave it to her, she was afraid of me, I had a ponytail, a weezer like sweater on, and I am 5'8 140lbs, somehow I freaked her out) -Dave Mathews sp? (He used to mingle at shows... back in '92 and I had a few homosexual friends who like coke)
I'd really like to get drunk with Frank one night, or at least have a couple of beers and a sandwich. I'd love to throw a private party with the band too, if I ever have money. Dream on.
noooooooooch
"Snooch to the muthaf**kin Nooch" ------------------------------------------------------------ as far as the gay sex joke regarding dave mathews sp? I am not gay. I wish I was but I am not gay. I have gay friends, have had gay friends, but have never had a gay lover. I do not intend on offending gay people, because KIRK READ is a great friend of mine, and you should buy his book, he is also my neighbor (naber) or was 'til he moved to san fran.
I think it is kirkread.com my friend, killer book, he's on tour as well doing book readings and shit... he's not your stereotyical gay personality. Check kirkread.com out!!!
I just dint want to offend anyone. --------- why I am I teaching human rights... no one gives a fuck

I agree with James Brown, NimrodsSon. Stay in school. Graduation is overrated. Actually, I haven't seen your profile. Maybe you're older than me. Anyway, care to elaborate on the Mike & Bruce show? How was it? And what was it like meeting cousin Mike and the writer of "I Write the Songs"? |

Terry Gilliam : as nice as he seems to be. We talked a bit about 12 monkeys and Monty Pythons, after a QA session. |

Answering Pioneers question (I hate doing the qoute things)... I know a lot of people on this forum said that this was going to be a lame show without Brian, but I found it very nice. They played with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and I was very surprised to hear them play You Still Believe In Me, which if I remember correctly, Bruce took the lead on. Bruce, who is probably my favorite Beach Boy as far as the few songs he wrote, also played a brief snippet of I Write The Songs, which just might be the most beautiful song ever written. The funny thing is that Barry Manilow sings I Write The Songs and he didn't even write the song. As far as meeting them, they both went over to side during the set break when the orchestra came in and chatted with everybody. Most of the people were getting autographs, but I didn't bring anything because I didn't think I'd speak to them at such a big place. The main person I wanted to meat was Bruce and all I really did was say hi and tell him how much his music meant to me and how beautiful it was, especially Disney Girls which is right up there with I Write The Songs as being the most beautiful. Mike was also very nice. He brought a girl from the audience up on the stage and danced with her during Surfer Girl. I also think I was the only 15 year old in the whole crowd, which is a real shame that kids my age just don't appreciate good music or have a taste for beautiful music. All they want is loud rock music (which is OK, but not ALL the time). Other than that, they pretty much played all their hit songs as well as Duke Of Earl, which Frank did of course. |

That sounds good, NimrodsSon. Almost always, the Brianistas who see Mike and Bruce end up admitting that those guys put on a good show, so I thought you'd enjoy it. I remember hearing "I Write the Songs" on a boombox in the park when it came out. I was so damn young. In fact, I was riding the merry-go-round when it came on. Beach Boys fans have often speculated Bruce wrote that song about Brian, but Bruce says, no way, it's about God. "You Still Believe in Me" is fantastic. The chorus is like a cushion of air.
Anyway, that's great that you got to meet those cats. |
