To debase means to make lower in value. So when they grow up they want to dispell what the common folk are told and know as truth. Well, that's the way I learned.

I have never seen the film but the song is based on 'Un Chien Andalusia' which is a Spanish film that includes an eye slicing scene (hmmm - nice !) hense the lyrics.
Don't know where the word Debaser comes in but i am sure if you watch the film, all will become clear.

I don't think the song "Debaser" is intrinsically linked to Dali and Bunuel's "Un Chien Andalu" in any capacity other than the slicing up eyeballs line. At least I never thought of it as a song ABOUT "Un Chien Andalu".
Then again, the short film was very experimental for its time (shit, its experimental even by today's standards if you ask me!) and you could say that the film 'debased' older notions of cinema and what should and should not be shown on screen as it brought in very stark, surrealistic and dreamlike imagery to the screen in a way that had not been done before.
I still don't think Debaser is about the film, per se...more like the lyric is just a fleeting reference to it. |

I was pretty sure Black said Debaser was directly influenced by Un Chein Andalusia sometime. Or maybe not.
"got me a movie" - it is a film after all "girlie so groovie" - the gal riding the bike "slicing up the eyeballs" - the slicing up of woman/cow's eyeball "debaser" - being someone who debases preconception and pushes the envelope: crazy art film |

Surely 'Debaser' is a song about Black seeing 'Un Chien Andalou' - being impressed and thinking 'yeah, I wanna fuck some shit up too!' (the technical term for what Bunuel and Dali were doing at the time). |

Hey. What does the literal translation of "un chien andalusia" mean, anyway? I am a slight history buff and "andalusia" or "al andalus" was the name of the 800-year rule of Muslims in Spain from approx. 700-1400 a.d.
Every night I dream the world away.

Un chien andalusia has no meaning (amalgamation of french and spanish) Un chein andalou = an adalusian dog (french) Frank changed the french Andalou to the spanish Andalousia because he said he thought it sounded better.

I showed Eraserhead to a girl while we were on our first date and it gave her nightmares. It may be that that is why the relationsiip ended shortly thereafter?... |

Andalucia: A region of Southern Spain which had a strong presence of muslims. (Flamenco was born as part of that, a mix of muslims and spanish music)
A chien andalou: a andalucian dog, thatīs the way Buņuel y Dali called to their friend Federico Garcia Lorca (spanish-poet killed in Spanish Civil War,(1936-1939) by fascists) Lorca wrote books of poetry like "Poet en New York") Today, Lorca is considered the greatest Spanish poet and dramatist of the 20th Century.

Yes, Sevilla is in Andalucia. Andalucia is a big region and have a lot of provinces with several towns. Sevilla is the biggest city in Andalucia, other cities in andalucia are Almeria, Granada and so on... And YES, Andalucian people (in generall) are very over-demonstrative (Im not sure thats the right word ...when someone tell you something and heīs exaggerating )

I read in Guitar Player magazine that when he was first writing the song he was singing " shed, appalonia " shed as in take of your clothes and appolonia as in the appolonia 6. |

probably. kim once said frank used to write the songs by just screaming general stuff along a melody and then refined them til he liked them sufficiently.

That method works quite well for me, except I'm usually not screaming. But I mostly just throw out meaningless sylables and put together the chords, then write the lyrics later. It seems to have worked well for Frank. I wonder if he still does it that way?

Yeah as far as I know he's always written songs like that - I remember reading somewhere that he had all the music for Teenager down then went to UMASS library to read books to get some words to put innem - it may have been a more complicated process than that.
