As I mentioned in another post, my wife had the nerve to say that Tom Yorke was a better vocalist than Frank. This nearly cost us our marriage. So somebody back me up. Or at least give me a good reason why you chose someone else.

"This nearly cost us our marriage."
That is funny.
I am a huge Radiohead and Frank fan. I hardly listen to any other pop music. But I have to say that Frank is the better vocalist. I am thinking of songs such as Caribou, Massif Centrale, The Big Hurt. Although Thom Yorke can make me cry. |

The Question is Moot.
Each does the best for the songs they write. |

I think Thom Yorke is a better vocalist in terms of mechanics, but he tends to express the same emotion again and again. Frank has the ability to be soft and gentle one song and scream like he's in hell the next.
I remember reading that Frank liked Radiohead, but wished Thome would articulate better so he could hear the lyrics.

I'd have to say Frank Black just for his range of emotion...Thom Yorke seems to stick to the same sort of style for the most part. Frank Black can go from one extreme to the other and hit everything in between. |

Yeah, Thom Yorke can make me cry too... anytime I endure the torture of hearing one of his songs, actually.

Frank by a country mile. Thom Yorke has gone up in my estimation since his appearance on the Gouge Away documentary - prasing all things Pixies - but he doesn't have the range/diversity described above.

thom yorkes songs are excellent - but i cant put him and FB in the same bracket because both do what they do very well. not sure if anyone saw the episode of father ted where radioheads 'exit music' was played on a bus and made tommy tiernan suicidal. fantastic!

Never really got into Radiohead, so my 2 cents don't count. As for the "This nearly cost us our marriage" argument my wife, for some reason, still thinks Robert Plant is a better vocalist. But I still love her.

blackpurse....I assume you're joking, but then again, I'm not sure. You strike me as quite the "activist."
Ok, both Frank and Thom are talented vocalists each with their own distinct style. However, I have to say that I prefer Frank. Sometimes Thom's voice/style is a little maudlin. I think Thom is more on-key, and has a better voice in the classical sense.
But Frank is my favored vocalist. |

Anyone who will go out of their way to take lessons from an opera professional must have a firm grasp on what they are attempting to accomplish. I believe both of these men take these lessons. From an articulate and pronounced point of view I think Frank's lyrics are most of the time understandable as compared to the tones made by Thom. To help save the marriage I will vote Frank.

they are pretty different, and i don't know if either of them could do justice to the others songs. 'priiiiize of the sea' would become an incomprehesible mumble coming from thom, but 'from a greeeeeeeeeat heeeeeeeeeeight' would sound a bit grating in frank's voice.

i think they both come into the bob dylan catergory. singers are either bob dylan or neil young. thom yorke has an amazing voice which is his medium but does that really mean emotion, both him and frank [well up until recently] maintain a kind of detachedness{?} with words but have they got 'soul'? frank is slowly moving into the neil young catergory who i think has got more so than dylan. ok this is a weak hypothesis i will work on it.
oh yeah frank took voice lessons around the DITS era so he could put on a longer show i read it in select or Q a few moons ago i dont know if he does now
oh yeah and frank thoughy thom was called colin[the bassist]and said he thought radiohead were quite good in Q's 15th anniversary magazine-ill find these magazines one day |

Thom Yorke sounds like he's being buggered when he sings, Frank doesn't so I'd say that Frank sings better.

While I thoroughly enjoy Thom Yorke's voice, I must say I think Frank has more range and a wider variety of styles. Thom's voice works extremely well within what Radiohead does, which covers a fair spectrum, but the sheer variety of voices that Frank seems to have, from the low rumble of the begining of "Los Angeles", to the hyper screaming of the pixies days, to his low scream on songs like "Hate Me", his stratospheric work on songs like "Massif Centrale" and his smooth high voice on "Stupid Me", and on and on, he can sing any style, in almost any key. Amazing. |

I can sing (words) along to Frank's songs.....I can only try to make noises that flow with the Radiohead tunes. I enjoy them both, I just enjoy Frank's stuff more, so I vote Frank. However, I don't think you're going to get many people here that agree with your wife. Maybe she should put a post on Radiohead's site and you guys could compare notes. |

Between these two? Frank. Thom just (admittedly) wants to be Mark Mulcahy when he sings. |

Well, I'm sorry but if this topic almost split your marriage, then you need to re-evalute a few things. Relationships bonded by law aside, I will be happy to cast my thoughts into this subject. Put simply, I cant understand a god damn word that comes out of Thom Yorke's mouth...and if THAT'S 'art', then BABY gimme Frank!

I would have to hear them sing each other's song to make a fair comparison. I'd love to hear frank give Iron Lung a whirl =)
IMO each of them write songs to fit thier vocal style and they are both really at the top of thier class in what they do.
