How many of you out there think His Kingly Cave is the best song off devils' workshop? No one seems to be talking about that one for some reason..I think its the coolest song off of that album and maybe even off of BLD's as well. The first time i heard it it really stuck out and i was hooked. It's got great chords, great lyrics, melody, its got it all. I think Frank should release that one as a single because i think the radio's would play it..it's a great song. |

most people probably weren't blown away with it because they've heard the earlier version Frank Black did for his un-released album Sunday Sunny Mill Valley Groove Day, and in truth, that version was better!

Yea, i downloaded that song off of napster about 2 years ago i guess..I was so into that song even tho when i first heard it, it was only about 10 seconds long(crapy 56k modem), great into with the chords. Still when i heard it off of DW it was kindof refreshing because it was slightly different. |

I think I'm in the minority, because the two "SSMVGD" songs to pop up on the new albums (I Will Run and Cave) both didn't leave that big an impression on me at first (on the groove day album). For some reason, hearing them on the albums has made me love both songs, and i like the new versions better. Fuller production. I like that ominous bass that starts pounding in I Will Run After You as it reaches its climax, and i like the quiet distortion that plays throughout Kingly Cave. Both great songs. |

I really like the lyrics - it seems (to me) to be a hallucinogenic trip during a visit to Gracelands |

I still can't understand how people like the new I Will Run more than the SSMVGD version...argh...SSMVGD blows this one way out of the water...this one seems so half assed and unemotional...filler, if you will. He is even struggling with the last part it seems. SSMVGD version is a lot more full, better performance overall, and a lot more emotion. The recording quality isn't as good, though. To each his own... |

I agree i like the SSMVG version of I Will Run After you better than the new version.
Samething with the original version I'll Be Blue. Frank's voice cracks up a bit on the album version, but the imperfections is what makes his recordings special and unique.
When i first heard His Kingly Cave on SSMVG i never really cared much for it. I love the new version and it's definetly my top 3 songs off the album.

I have not heard 'ssmvgd' so I am not too sure what the old version of I Will Run After You is like, but I don't really like the BLD version.
His Kingly Cave is a great song I agree, although Whiskey in your Shoes, Heloise, The Scene, Out of State and San Antonio, TX are much better. |

The new I will Run is better up until the last high part. I like that he sang it lower. As for His Kingly Cave, I like the SSMVGD one much better. The way the keyboard comes in and everything, killer! |

haha yah ive been preaching about the keyboard intro on the ssmvgd (ive never typed that so much in my life) version of his kingly cave for a long time now, it completely sells me on why i like it more than the new version.

The new version of HKC is mindblowing... The last part when he murmurs "yes...", I love that. I couldn't choose between the 2 versions, honestly.

Don't agree and think the new version is stronger (poetry wise) : "I said : 'I am fine' and 'thank you'" is better than "I said : 'I am fine thank you, thank you""
Because the first one is more fit (people don't say thankyouthankyou they just say thankyou). See what i mean ?
But it's just for the sake of arguing. |

I would like to hear the old version of HKC. Currently, it's my fave on the new record-- but that usually changes over time. I think the weakest part of the song is the guitar solo. A better lead guitar part over the middle 8 would make it perfect (in my opinion). |

Well if they ever do release it as a single which i think they should, they could make another version like the pixies singles (planet of sound, debaser, velouria, river euphrates) which were slightly changed. They could take the best of both worlds. |

Y'know. I totally agree - although I always hesitate to compare one song to another, but y'are right - that song made my skin crawl... it did stick out first listen. if any one can figure out how to play it please gimme tab. I love that vocal style - it gets my hackles up.

It is definitely a trip - but is it not centred around Elvis ('the King') and Gracelands (the jumpsuits, leapord skins on the walls, polished jewels, the posse, visitors/shuttle buses)? |

His kingly cave is a great song. It's eerie to me. I like the chords. How Frank puts melody lines with clever lyrics over some of his chord progressions boggles my mind. Crazy how he can start this song and end it on a suspended chord and make it work.

His Kingly Cave is about the time Charles went to Graceland on shrooms - true story. I guess he mentioned the event in an interview. And I dig the version on Devil's Workshop more than SSMVGD. It's way more spooky...just the effects on the voice is enough. It's great. |

Never heard the old version. If someone could let me know where the hell I can obtain a copy of ssmvg, then that would be the coolest thing in the world. On His Kingly Cave: The label should release it as a single, and it should rise to the top of the charts and rescue us from crappy music forever. Followed by every other tune that Frank has done nailing the top of the charts. Most people's musical tastes may not be crap. They just might never have heard of Frank Black.

If you have an idea in your head that he is at Graceland with his wife and then read the lyrics along with the song it all makes sense.

I'm sorry, I can't elaborate any further. This is news I heard a while ago from someone who had read an interview long ago where he mentions going to Graceland on shrooms. I'm pretty sure this is well before HKC was recorded. This news is like "a friend of a friend told me that..." but it's true.
Obvious references: altered state, the cap they ate (mushroom cap) Obvious Graceland references: inside the mansion walls, jumpsuit on a headless cast, polished jewels under two inch glass... |

ha, Mirv, I have to say. Even if i don't agree with you on BLD, you are an anomally in this board in terms of actually....gasp! disliking something Frank has done. haha, It's odd, but i have to respect you for it. That is one thing i love about Frank though, his fans hold him in SUCH high regard. every other message board for a band i'm on everyone's like "this album sucks, but this one is good" (especially Sonic Youth)..but with Frank, nearly everyone loves eveerything. 'cept Mirv and BLD of course |

i like a few songs on black letter days. however, as a whole that album is a big yawn in my books.
devil's workshop, however, is a fine album indeed.
