It's not a Soft Cell song, it's a cover too. And Manson's version sucks.

What's wrong with MCD's Little Red Book? It's one of my favorite songs on In Name and Blood.
Anyways...
Good: Johnny Cash - Hurt Therapy? - Denim Demon
Bad: Beastie Boys - Big Shot - I like the Beastie Boys a lot, but none of the versions I've heard live up to the original. |

Sorry GHutt, my brother plays them all the time and I really dont like them except maybe for the Christmas song they have . Hee hee, someone who likes Billy Joel as well, I love Big Shot but I think B B do a good hardcore version of it. They also do a great Bennie and the Jets cover by Elton John

Jeff Buckley's Lilac Wine (don't know the original) is amazing. Really a good one maybe Hallelujah is a bit too much but I like his version more than L.Cohen's

a few years back a band called Thethe released an album called 'hanky panky' comprising only of hank williams cover versions. i dont think any other band has done anything like this before. its an interesting album and their version of 'i saw the light' is pretty good stuff. |

I think someone mentioned John Cale's version of 'Hallelujah'
...which reminded me of Rufus Wainwright's fantastic cover of 'Hallelujah', which seems to be more of a cover of Cale's cover of Cohen.

Good:
My Bloody Valentine -- We Have All the Time in the World; U2 (no, really) -- any of the covers on their Rattle & Hum b-sides (no, really); Husker Du -- Eight Miles High.
Bad:
Phil Collins -- You Can't Hurry Love; Gone blank now, but I keep hearing really shitty rap, nu-metal, R&B and purported "soul" covers on MTV, which my sister watches 24/7, and all I can say is "Oh. My. God."

I dunno, any of the live versions of Big Shot I've heard, Mike D always messes the lyrics up. When you're so accustomed to the original, it kind of irks me I guess. Billy Joel was really the only thing I listened to in elementary school. Don't listen to him very often anymore, but I'll put it on in the car every so often and sing along. |

I love to listen to Its Still Rock and Roll to me in my car really really loud. My parents listened to Billy Joel too and I guess it rubs off. Just like Neil Diamond but I draw the line at Roger Whittaker and god forbid Nana Mouskouri. |

Ekkkk!, ye horrible, my brother likes that as well! and that Sanchez DJ guy used it as a sample in some shit song. But I didn't mind the Sugar Babes use of Are Your Friends Electric, mostly cause its the Sugar Babes I have to say I liked that Liberty X cover of that Dina Ross song even though they are the manufactured corperate manikins they portray in the video.

Atheist4Catholics - I got to say I think not only is Tin Machine's version of Debaser absolutely stunning, it is probably the greatest thing the duke did in the 1980s.
On the other hand, his version of 'Cactus' from Earthling is truly bad.

I am one of them. I like Bowie's take on cactus -- its very Bowie and its a Bowie-esque song to begin with.
Plus, "Cactus" is our 4-year-old's favorite song, and its the Bowie version she likes so much. |

One really terrible cover is Fiona Apple doing Across the Universe. Such a beautiful song that has all the life sucked out of it by her. Rufus Wainright does a very nice version of it though. Plus he's a very nice chap. |

I've never been a big fan of Tori Amos' Smells Like Teen Spirit. It's too dramatic and over the top for my liking.
Now, the Melvins doing Smells Like... with Leif Garret singing is kind of cool. |

Better yet, I saw them play it live. with Leif Garrett there, singing it! What's hilarious is that while he was singing the whole crowd was booing at him, and when he was done the Melvins had this attitude where they were like "hahaha yeah, jokes on you Leif, get off the stage now"....I kind of felt bad for the dude.
Kind of. |

y'all gotta check out 'senior coconut' doing all kraftwerk songs with latin samples of perez prado 'n such in a brazilian tinged drum machine mode -hilarious and hipnotic. this guy ( i forget his real name -like FB he uses stage name but different every release -atom heart was one i believe) also did something called '14 footballers in milk chocolate' -messed up, chopped up brazilian fun. definitely most covers suck green weenies though

That's not Ween - I forget the name of the band who does it, but it's mislabelled as Ween. Still, it is a good version... Boyz in the Hood by Dynamite Hack is along the same lines, and kind of catchy as well. |

mogwai did a fantastic cover of "don't cry" (guns 'n roses) for a peel sessions in '97 that was really good. there were rumours that they were gunna release an ep of g'n'r covers, but it never eventuated.....
and the breeeders take on "happiness is a warm gun" is pretty damn good. |
